Director Carlos Lopéz Estrada On ‘Raya And The Last Dragon,’ Working With Disney, And His Thoughts On DC’s Latino ‘Blue Beetle’

03.4.2021 | By |

Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon‘ will be the first major motion-picture to be released after New York City theaters finally re-open at only 25% capacity this weekend. Though it won’t be an accurate assessment of the potential of all NYC and LA theaters fully re-opening, it will give Hollywood executives a sense for the public’s appetite to see new releases on the big screen, rather than streaming.  If ‘Raya’ overdelivers, then we can assume we’re going to have a great summer. But if it underperforms… then we can surmise that people still aren’t comfortable being closed in a room with strangers for two straight hours. At the center of all this attention is Carlos Lopéz Estrada, co-director of the film, who sat with us to discuss a wide array of topics including what he learned as a director and storyteller at Disney, his thoughts on being Latino and directing an Asian film, and why he believes we’re entering a new era of Latino superheroes. Today, we’re delving into the ending of ‘Beatriz at Dinner‘ as explained by Puerto Rican director Miguel Arteta in our exclusive Q&A. But before we address that big elephant in the room, I had the chance to interview Mr. Arteta, for our Highly Relevant podcast, and I asked him several questions, close to 20 minutes in total, which spawned some memorable answers about his Puerto Rican heritage, the Latino experience in America, Salma Hayek’s business prowess, that controversial movie ending, and how he believes without a doubt, The Matrix is the first multicultural blockbuster film created in Hollywood.

Only 2 Latinos Were Nominated For A 2016 Emmy… Anthony Mendez Was 1 Of Them

07.14.2016 | By |

He’s 2 for 2 now. Dominican voiceover talent Anthony Mendez has held the fort down once again for the Jane the Virgin camp (even powerhouse Gina Rodriguez hasn’t been able to get an Emmy nod) garnering a second Emmy nomination and only one of two Latinos nominated this year. How cool and large is that? (btw, how is it Gael Garcia Bernal, Oscar Isaac weren’t nominated?) Last year I had the pleasure of meeting up with Mendez for an NBCLatino story I was doing, at his home in New Jersey. We sat down to discuss the reaction of his first Emmy, the struggle and appreciation behind it and a look at his home-studio and how much his family is a part of his success. Mendez drops it from the heart, dude almost made me cry. Have a #TBT look below…

My NBCLatino Interview With Jennifer Lopez and Lin-Manuel Miranda

07.11.2016 | By |

This was a crazy morning. I had gotten an email last week from the editor-in-chief of NBCLatino, Sandra Lilley, asking if I’d be interested in interviewing Jennifer Lopez and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

I said yes, of course! This was the biggest interview “get” in the business, Spanish or English, and there were only a small number of outlets approved. We discussed their “Love Make The World Go Round” music video in tribute to the Orlando shooting.

Here’s a video excerpt of a bigger interview I did with them today… Lopez was clearly overwhelmed with the emotion of the subject matter. This one hit home for both.

05.9.2016 | By |

When one says the name Rob Reiner, plentiful thoughts of superlatives comes to mind, but what most people associate the name Rob Reiner with is his character Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic from “All in the Family” and for his romantic-comedy classic “When Harry Met Sally,” at least for this writer. A further look into Reiner’s cinematic oeuvre and you’ll slowly understand how the tag of living legend might apply. Read More

Sacha Baron Cohen Talks Shock Comedy, “Donald Trump’s AIDS”

03.13.2016 | By |

Sacha Baron Cohen was in NYC this past week to talk about his new action comedy – The Brothers Grimsby – a James Bond like buddy film where moments can get VERY uncomfortable amongst brothers. Spanish actress and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz co-stars in it, but much like Zoolander 2, she has been opting for comedy as of late (which sounds more like she can’t get any quality work and money is running dry).   Read More
