Matt Damon and Pedro Almodóvar to work together?

02.12.2011 | By |

While promoting ‘The Adjustment Bureau‘ in New York, Matt Damon confessed he has begged the brilliant Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar to do a movie together. He says he’s up to the challenge of working in a Spanish language film.

This comes at the heel of the news that Michael Cera is going to Chile to do a movie completely in Spanish with Sebastian Silva (The Maid). Will Ferrell kick-started the crossover movement when it was announced Ferrell would be doing a new comedy in Spanish with Mexican icons Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.

“I’ve been begging Pedro Almodóvar for years to give me a job in one of his films.” Damon said of Almodovar, the Spanish director whose works include ‘Volver’ and ‘All About Your Mother’. “Some of the best directors in the world are [Hispanic], ah, Iñárritu, there’s just a ton of guys right now,” Damon explained.

Damon is factually right. Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu, Juan José Campanella are all Spanish language directors who either have won an Oscar or have been nominated for one in the last decade.

Damon added how difficult it is for any actor to work in a different language and be successful.

“You know, I think about Penélope [Cruz] or these actresses that I’ve worked with who are acting in their second language, it’s unbelievably challenging, it’s really, really challenging, it’s a whole other thing. I’d love to work with one of those master directors in a Spanish-language film for the challenge. I feel like I can do it. Obviously as an American I wouldn’t pass as a Mexican, Puerto Rican, but no, I’d love the challenge,” he explained.

The crossover of American actors over to the Spanish side is beginning to be a wise business decision for many thespians looking for status, acclaim, and yes, attention. The question is who is the next Hollywood actor to take the leap?
