Nike’s ‘Back to The Future’ Power Laces: 5 Sci-Fi Movie Inventions That Should Become Real

02.20.2014 | By |

For decades the creative minds of the people behind sci-fi film and television have inspired real-life inventions like: full body security scans (“Total Recall”), video calls (“Blade Runner”) and universal translators (“Star Trek”). In 2015 Nike is making yet another sci-fi dream come true, which was inspired by the 1989 film “Back to the Future II.”

According to Sole Collector, during an appearance at the Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab in New Orleans, Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield confessed that a tech footwear is in the works.

“Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes!” said Hatfield.

Back in 2011, Nike released the Nike Air Mag, Marty McFly’s signature shoe from the film. According to CNET, the shoe is an identical replica of the one worn by Michael J. Fox – but without the power laces feature – which Nike would action off on eBay with all proceeds going to the actor’s foundation for Parkinson’s Research. According to Fox’s site, the 10-day action topped $4.7 million.

Although there is no word on if Nike will use the original Nike Air Mag or another shoe audiences will at least getting the power laces and just in time since in the film the shoes are actually from 2015.

In celebration of the Nike’s feat, here are 5 other sci-fi film and television inventions that need to become reality soon:

5. Fizzy-Lifting Drinks – “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”

In the film, fizzy-lifting drinks help Grandpa Joe and Charlie gently float in the air. This is necessary just is plain fun, well as long as there are no fans with sharp blades around.

4. Gadget Hands – “Inspector Gadget”

Gadget hands are mechanical hands that pop out of the inspector’s hat in order to help. Aren’t you tired of asking for an extra hand? These are obviously the perfect solution!

3. 3-D without glasses – “Star Wars”

This one goes out to Hollywood. Since thye 1970s “Star Wars” has been teasing us with the idea of the hologram. This needs to be the next step in film technology because frankly 3-D isn’t cutting it.

2. Transporter – “Star Trek”

Since the 1960’s “Star Trek” has not only given all geeks a reason to live, but it gave pop culture the best gift of all, our obsession with teleportation. This device allows the transfer of matter from one location to another. No one cares about a self-driving car when you can transport yourself in seconds to your desired location.

Although this technology won’t be available by 2015, it is starting to become a reality little by little. According Popular Science, two years ago Chinese physicists at the University of Science and Technology of China, teleported photons over 97 kilometers. Sure it will be a while till Scotty can beam up a person, but be hopeful people!

1. Food Replicator – “Star Trek: The Next Generation”

Someone please make Gene Roddenberry in charge of life! This is a genius gadget that creates food and beverages for the crew. It could be the end of world hunger or at least give tired people like parents a little break. According to The Daily Mail, Nasa is working towards something similar with a 3-D printer that would create food from cartridges full of carbohydrates, protein powders and oils.
