Only 2 Latinos Were Nominated For A 2016 Emmy… Anthony Mendez Was 1 Of Them

07.14.2016 | By |

He’s 2 for 2 now. Dominican voiceover talent Anthony Mendez has held the fort down once again for the Jane the Virgin camp (even powerhouse Gina Rodriguez hasn’t been able to get an Emmy nod) garnering a second Emmy nomination and only one of two Latinos nominated this year. How cool and large is that? (btw, how is it Gael Garcia Bernal, Oscar Isaac weren’t nominated?) Last year I had the pleasure of meeting up with Mendez for an NBCLatino story I was doing, at his home in New Jersey. We sat down to discuss the reaction of his first Emmy, the struggle and appreciation behind it and a look at his home-studio and how much his family is a part of his success. Mendez drops it from the heart, dude almost made me cry. Have a #TBT look below…

Is Shalim Ortiz Returning To Music?

02.5.2014 | By |

For more than a decade, actor Shalim Ortiz, who is of Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage, has successfully crisscrossed between the American (“Magic City“) and Latin (“Dama y Obrero“) worlds of film and television — a privilege only a few experience — but his initial mark was made in music. In 2003, Ortiz was actually well known for his second and last album “Cuarto Sin Puerta”, an Emilio Estefan collaboration. Remember “Se Me Olvido Tu Nombre,” the huge hit from 2003? It reached #2 on the Latin Billboard charts, and now 11 years later, he’s toying with the idea of returning music again with “Va a Llover,” a single made just in time for Valentine’s Day.  Read More

Zoe Saldana: First poster of 'The Words'

The new poster for The Words, a romantic drama starring Dominican actress Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons, is here. The film follows Cooper playing a young writer who passes off another author’s work as his own and deals with the consequences that inevitably arise. The Words is directed by debut directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal and will open September 7th.

Here’s the complete plot: Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.

In their directorial debut, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal have crafted a subtle tale that examines how overwhelming desire can lead to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Bolstered by a strong cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons, The Words adeptly assembles multiple narratives that reveal how one man’s lost legacy holds the life of another man captive.

Zoe Saldana could work alongside Batman

Zoe Saldana could work alongside Batman

Dominican actress Zoe Saldaña, known worldwide for her starring role as Neytiri in Avatar, is in negotiations to join Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) in ‘Out of the Furnace . Little is known about the role other than that she will act as the ex-wife of Bale in the film. There is also speculation that her screen time will be plentiful.

The argument will focus on an ex-convict (Bale) trying to integrate back into society in a small town in Indiana, but is haunted by a figure from his past.

In an interesting note, the project, whose original name was Low Dweller, Rupert Sanders was initially attached to direct it, but Sanders retired and Scott Cooper was hired. Also Channing Tatum and Garrett Hedlund were considered to play the brother of Christian Bale. From what we understand, Casey Affleck is the winner of that competition.

Saldaña will join two other Hispanics at heart, Robert Duvall, who is about to confirm his role as Bale’s uncle while Viggo Mortensen could end up being the villain.

The Dominican actress has 4 upcoming films: Avatar 2, Blood Ties, Star Trek 2 and The Words.

The distribution company for Out of the Furnace is Relativity Media with Appian Way as the producer. Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott will serve as producers of the film. Still no release date.
