3 questions with Latina actress Gloria Laino

3 questions with Latina actress Gloria Laino

The first time I saw Puerto Rican actress Gloria Laino was at 2012’s ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ post-credits teaser trailer of the Paranormal Latino spinoff. Her brief appearance freaked me out for days as it did the rest of the audience in the theater. Regrettably, the horror film is in development hell and who knows if it’s ever going to see the light of day.

What we can say is that she is very busy working in television and film with American Horror Story: Asylum and A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III starring Charlie Sheen, respectively.  Read More

‘Warm Bodies’ is #1 Super Bowl weekend

'Warm Bodies' is #1 Super Bowl weekend

This Super bowl weekend ‘Warm Bodies’ the comedy about the zombie-human romance opened at number one with $19.5 million dollars. The film appealed mainly to females, but the zombies brought in a different element and a broader audience. Also, the great reviews will probably keep it around for longer.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ last week’s number one dropped to number two with $9.2 million dollars. The fairytale might still be able to accumulate more money, but that’s still left to be seen. Read More

‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ is #1!

'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' is #1!

Paramount Pictures’Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ got a strong hold of the number one spot with $19 million dollars. The violent spin of the Brothers Grimm fairytale only got a lukewarm welcome. The film got pushed back almost an entire year from its original release date in hopes that Jeremy Renner’s 2012 success would help it reach a broader audience; but that strategy doesn’t seem to have worked.

Mama’ dropped to the second spot with $12.9 million dollars and it has now earned past its production cost. The movie has been a triumph for the studio and it still has many countries left to premiere in, so it will earn much more. Read More

‘Warm Bodies’: Pase exclusivo a la Alfombra Roja!

01.27.2013 | By |

ShowBizCafe.com was one of the three Hispanic outlets invited to the exclusive red carpet premiere of ‘Warm Bodies’ in New York City. There I got to catch up with the main cast and director, as well as spot a few other celebrities invited to the screening such as Tony Danza and Gabourey Sidibe, best known for her role in the movie ‘Precious’.

Warm Bodies’ from director Jonathan Levine is about a Zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult) who falls in love with a human, Julie (Teresa Palmer), which changes the rules in both of their worlds and might help calm the chaos of the apocalypse. Read More

Movie Review: Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Parker’

Movie Review: Jennifer Lopez's 'Parker'

I must say that as soon as I heard that British B-actor Jason Statham was teaming up with the Puerto Rican diva Jennifer Lopez in an action flick called “Parker“, my mouth dropped in reaction to seeing one of the worst casting selections done in recent Hollywood history. What does Statham’s violent, testosterone driven, one-liner B-films have to do with Lopez’s dough-eye, ear to ear smile, rom-coms? Nothing! So what was the result? A satisfying union of action violence and sweet sexy comedy. These two stars might not necessarily be a match made in heaven, but each one brings their appealing specialties that can please the mass moviegoing taste, especially the Latino moviegoer who eats this shit up! Could 2013 be the best year for Latinos in Hollywood?

2013 has started off, in what can be argued, as one of the best beginnings to a year for Latino actors in Hollywood movies. January alone has seen Guillermo del Toro and Andres Muschietti behind the camera in Mama, Michael Peña in Gangster Squad, Jennifer Lopez in Parker, Natalie Martinez in Broken City, Eva Longoria in The Baytown Outlaws, Andy Garcia in The Dark Truth and The Last Stand with Luis Guzman, Genesis Rodriguez, Rodrigo Santoro and Eduardo Noriega. There’s even holdovers from 2012  still in release with Edgar Ramirez in Zero Dark Thirty and John Ortiz in Silver Linings Playbook. Read More

Mama’ presented by executive producer Guillermo del Toro and directed by Andres Muschietti from Spain, takes the number one spot with $28.1 million dollars. ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ finally on top of the box office

'Zero Dark Thirty' finally on top of the box office

Zero Dark Thirty’ opened in limited theaters four weeks ago, now that it has opened nationwide it took the number one spot with $24 million dollars. The nominations it got for the Oscars and the controversial story have certainly helped it get to this place, not to mention outstanding performances.

Marlon Wayane’s ‘A Haunted House’ surprisingly opened in second place with $18.8 million dollars. The film has received terrible reviews and based on its predecessors no one expected it to do so well, despite that it will most likely fall from the top 10 soon.

Gangster Squad’ which has a number of known names attached to it such as Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and the likes of Josh Brolin only reached number three with $16.7 million dollars. Because of the Newton shooting the film was delayed and this seems to have hurt it, reviews might have helped to its demise as well.

The Top 10 in the Box Office are:

1. Zero Dark Thirty – $24 mil

2. A Haunted House – $18.8 mil

3. Gangster Squad – $16.7 mil

4. Django Unchained – $11.1 mil

5. Les Miserables – $10.1 mil

6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $9.1 mil

7. Lincoln – $6.3 mil

8. Parental Guidance – $6.1 mil

9. Texas Chainsaw 3D – $5.2 mil

10. Silver Linings Playbook – $5 mil
