The month of June is offering a large selection of Hollywood films that are highly anticipated by movie lovers globally.
But because there are so many interesting and intriguing films on tap, we have sifted through everything and found the six best your pocket won’t mind spending any cash on.
You’ll find everything from a comedy that will become endure cult film status, DC Comics trying to restore the king of superheroes to its throne, plus Sofia Coppola’s new social commentary project. No doubt these are the six summer “Must See” flicks.
6. The Bling Ring (Crime/Drama, June 21st, Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga)
Plot: Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.
Why you should see it: It’s only 88 minutes, the cast is young and beautiful and the story line is about fame, money and drugs Sofia Coppola style. Who doesn’t like that concept? Coppola’s new directorial effort is her most commercial and fun film to date. Her last effort – Somewhere – seemed slow and drawn out, the way ‘Lost in Translation’ did. Also her antepenultimate film – Marie Antoinette – was over-stylized. With “The Bling Ring,” the film moves quicker, the shots are shorter and the young and mostly unknown actors were perfectly cast. What you’re probably going to like the most is the fly on the wall perspective of how celebrities homes look like inside and the social commentary of America’s youth with the Hollywood life. It’s contemporary and resonates loud and clear.
5. White House Down (Action/Thriller, June 28th, Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Richard Jenkins, Jason Clarke)
Plot: While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.
Why you should see it: It’s funny, full of wild action and the magic between the protagonists is almost unbearable. We had the pleasure of being one of the few journalists to see a nice chunk of the film and we can tell you that you’re going to laugh you ass off while visually being entertained by the adrenaline rush of the film’s pace. Channing Tatum has become Hollywood’s ‘It’ hunk right now and everything he touches turns to gold at the box office. Jamie Foxx has an Oscar for acting in dramas, but do not forget his comic ability that will yield anyone to their knees with laughter (if you don’t believe me, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KULCIFMOOw ). With the charisma of these two stars, the stunning action and the exciting premise, there is no doubt this will be one of the more satisfying movies of the summer.
4. World War Z (Action/Thriller/Horror/Science Fiction, June 21st, Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Matthew Fox, Bryan Cranston)
Plot: United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
Why you should see it: An A-list movie star, killer special effects and a captivating story. But look at what that did for AFTER EARTH and Will Smith. Regardless, it’ll be hard to stay away from seeing this film, even if reviews are lukewarm. When I spoke to one of the executives over at Paramount about the negative rumors surrounding the film, I was assured that they are confident that World War Z will be a success. After watching the second trailer and word from various sources who have already seen it, we agree that it’ll be better than After Earth. Brad Pitt almost always chooses great scripts and his last three movies have been fantastic with two of them being nominated for the Oscars. Besides, who doesn’t like zombie movies?
3. Monsters University (Animation, Comedy, June 21st, Nathan Fillion, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Billy Crystal)
Plot: Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) are inseparable friends, but it was not always so. When they met in college, could not stand, but finally overcoming their differences and became best friends. Prequel to one of the greatest successes of Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.”.
Why you should see it: Hilarious, the best animation production of the year, and it even has action. Look, we know Pixar has gone through a bit of a “slump” in the last few years with “Cars 2″ and “Brave” (don’t be fooled by the Oscar win this year by “Brave” as Best Animated Film. It was stolen from “Wreck-It-Ralph”). But this new prequel from one of the most loved movies of the Pixar collection returns to deliver the goods at a very high level. After already seeing it, once again, youngsters and adults alike will love it. We assure you its entertainment value is at an all time high. It is so good that we think it’s worth watching twice. See you at the Academy Awards 2014.
2. This is The End (Comedy, June 14th, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Ferguson)
Plot: While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other A- list celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.
Why you should see it: In our professional opinion, this is the best comedy of 2013. We have not laughed this hard since “TED” last year. Perhaps the most appealing element of this film is the innovative concept of the actors playing themselves and not fictional characters. In other words, Seth Rogen plays Seth Rogen. The result is something historic. The chemistry between the cast is sensational, and even though the apocalyptic story is stale, it feels fresh due to the magic the cast provides the content. If you want to laugh to the point that security needs to escort out of the theater, go see this. It is an instant classic cult film.
1. Man of Steel (Science Fiction, Action, Drama, June 14th, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne)
Plot: In this new adaptation, a young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
Why you should see it: The most awaited movie of 2013 has to be “Man of Steel”. It is the return of Superman, the king of all superheroes, and everyone is rooting for this film to do well for a variety of reasons. If it is a success, it prolongs the superhero craze another 10 years, we’ll get to see a Justice League movie and we’ll have Superman in theaters for the foreseeable future. British actor Henry Cavill is the real deal and has the masculinity, good looks and acting skill that Christopher Reeves had. With the great Christopher Nolan in tow along visual effects wizard Zack Snyder at the helm, this Superman will make us forget past mistakes. We are predicting worldwide box office records and a much better movie than the infantile “Iron Man 3″. With a premise less comical and more darker and serious in tone, there is no doubt ‘Man of Steel’ will be the #1 “Must See” of the summer.
