The Lego Movie (Movie Review)

02.7.2014 | By |

Rating:

The “1-4-0″: @TheLEGOMovie is a kids film on the surface, but adults will enjoy it more. It’s creative and hilarious with a surprising family warmth!

The Gist: Your old toy set from your childhood has gotten its own movie. A too perky Lego builder ends up involving himself in saving the universe somehow with Batman by his side.

The Highlights: Just hearing the title of the movie, The Lego Movie, is enough to make you yawn. I mean, what story could you possibly come up with for an 1hr 41min? Then all of a sudden… boom! It blows your mind with its computer animated graphics, its swift pace, it’s clever sub-layered humor, it’s sticky and contagious soundtrack (“Everything is Awesome!”), its whacky, but enjoyable characters (Batman is VERY funny!) and its standout vocal performances. What really soars through is the creativity behind the story concept and the witty comical dialogue full of adult quips, fast one liners and double entendres. It’s also nostalgic with a dose of family values.

The Lowlights: You could argue that the pace might be too frantic for some and that some of the jokes and sarcastic remarks would befuddle the kids, but it’s never too esoteric to not engage you for the long haul.

Pay or Nay?: Pay for it twice! This will perhaps end up being the best comedy of the year when it’s all said and done and is an automatic frontrunner for Best Animated Movie at the Oscars. The young mind as well as the wise mind can co-watch almost without skipping a beat. You’ll laugh, and maybe even, choke up a bit towards the denouement. Wait for the cameo and twist at the end, which should seal the deal for all visually involved.

Lyrics to “Everything is Awesome”:
Everything is Awesome,
Everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is Awesome when you’re living out a dreams
Everything is better when we stick together,
Side by side you and I gonna win forever?
Let’s party forever
We’re the same unlike you, you & me we are a working in harmony
Everything is Awesome,
Everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is Awesome when you’re living out a dreams…
