Jack Rico’s Top 10 Movies Of 2016

12.29.2016 | By |

It’s hard to look back at 2016 and not think how tragic it was to lose our beloved artistic icons. But when it comes to motion pictures, there were a couple of silver linings one can sanguinely lean on as bright spots. Though this was by far the year of superheroes and animated films, it was also the year where we witnessed the Golden Age of African-American storytelling. With remarkable films such as Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Birth of a Nation, Kicks, Loving, 13th and I Am Not Your Negro in theaters, the outlook for black cinema finally looks hopeful. Women and multiculturalism were also front and center on screen and behind the scenes and no film was more demonstrative of those attributes than Rogue One. Movies, in general, impact people differently and I believe the Top 10 Movies I have selected above not only reflect those qualities but provide the standard of excellence in cinema this year.

A quick note…  the omission of some widely acclaimed movies in this list might cause you outrage (Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea), but hey, I didn’t connect with them as profoundly as you did. If I did a Top 25, they’d be in there. Nevertheless, I’m adding a sublist of the other movies I really enjoyed, admired, and was just pleasantly surprised by. Add them to your cue to watch soon.
