As The Weinstein Company is making an invigorated Oscar push to drive their dramedy Silver Linings Playbook to a historic upset over the leading favorite front runner Argo in the Best Picture category, I had a lengthy and very enjoyable discussion with one of its co-stars, Puerto Rican thespian John Ortiz, who plays Ronnie, best friend to Bradley Cooper in the film.

This Valentine’s Day weekend ‘Escape From Planet Earth’ an original animated family film will open nationwide! For us Latinos who love animated films this will be one to go see, especially because of the great Latino actors who voice some of the most important characters in the film: Jessica Alba is Lena, the beautiful and intelligent chief at BASA, Sofia Vergara plays Gabby the hot and spicy anchor for BNN News, and finally George Lopez a three-eyed slug alien named Thurman. We had a chance to sit down with two of their funny cast mates, Craig Robinson is Doc an intergalactic radio talk-show therapist, an adorable and genius alien mouse who invented social networking and is the voice of reason to all the other prisoners in Area 51. The New York Film Critics Circle surprisingly voted yesterday wins in three different categories for “Zero Dark Thirty” as the Best Picture, Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director and Greig Fraser for Best Cinematography. Karl Urban plays the character of Judge Dredd on ‘Dredd 3D’ Lionsgate Rated R film, where in a violent futuristic city the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner; he teams up with Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) a trainee to take down a gang that deals a reality-altering drug, called SLO-MO.
The film is derived from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra successful comic book from the 70’s. Sylvester Stallone played this same character in the film ‘Judge Dredd’ from 1995, which didn’t do so well, but fortunately this one redeems it, as it is one of the best 3D action films that we’ve seen all year thanks to director Pete Travis’ work. I had the opportunity to chat with the star of the film; Karl Urban where he told me about the challenges he encountered as well as what attracted him to the film and the talk of possible sequels. Movie fans! What would you do or give up to be an actor in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time – The Avengers? A better question to ask would be, how sickly talented do you have to be to even make it past the casting auditions!? Mexican-American actor Walter Perez can pat himself on the back with Thor’s Hammer with a grin on his face from here to Asgard because he achieved just that!
Perez is one of the up and coming rising stars in the highly competitive Hollywood business. It’s even more competitive when you are a Latino actor, because of the dearth of roles out there for Hispanics.
