We’ve been hearing about this TV pilot for sometime and it is finally here. The CW has officially greenlit Jane the Virgin starring Filly Brown star Gina Rodriguez and we have the first trailer above and a clip for you to see below!
English-language mainstream television is now fully embracing Hispanic actors as leads. The times of a Latino thespian being relegated to ONLY extra or supporting roles are slowly coming to an end. With Lifetime’s ‘Devious Maids,’ FOX’s ‘Gang Related’ and now the CW’s ‘Jane The Virgin‘ all sporting Latino protagonists and casts, things are a changing!
For those of you who might not be familiar with Puerto Rican actress Gina Rodriguez‘s work, she became a breakout star in the indie hit ‘Filly Brown‘ and has another five projects currently in the works, including a rumored participation in ‘The Dirty Girls Social Club‘. Also cast in the show are Jaime Camil, Diane Guerrero, Jenna Ortega, Andrea Navedo, amongst others.
The CW to many has been considered one of the most Caucasian casted networks since its inception. It’s evolution to diversify its programs and image has officially begun!

Synopsis: Based on the telenovela Juana la Virgen, Jane the Virgin follows 23-year-old Jane Villanueva (played by Gina Rodriguez). When Jane Villanueva was a young girl, her grandmother, Alba, convinced her of two things: telenovelas are the highest form of entertainment, and women must protect their virginity at all costs. Jane is a driven young woman studying to become a teacher, nursing a dream to be a writer, and supporting herself with a job at a hot new Miami hotel. She has a wonderful fiancé — a handsome, hard-working detective named Michael — who loves her enough to accept her detailed timeline for their future together and even her insistence on “saving herself” until they’re married. But Jane’s world is suddenly turned upside down when she goes to see her doctor for a routine check-up and is accidentally artificially inseminated with a specimen meant for the patient in the next room.
Jane the Virgin premieres on The CW in October and will air Mondays at 9pm!
