In a really, really, really bad year for animated movies, we finally get to see, perhaps, the frontrunner to the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars – Frozen – from Walt Disney Animation Studios (Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph). Its toughest competitor will most likely be The Wind Rises by legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle). That film had a soporific effect on me that almost lulled me to sleep.
Official synopsis: Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.
The film is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and features original songs from Filipino Tony winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
On a side note, Broadway fans should be happy since three of their brethren will be a part of the film – Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Robert Lopez.
“Frozen” hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 27, 2013. Tell us what you think of the trailer. Do you think it’ll win at the Oscars?
