Stallone and De Niro will box

05.31.2012 | By |

Stallone and De Niro will box

In October 2010 there were rumors about a boxing comedy from the director of ‘Tommy Boy’ and ‘Anger Management’ Peter Segall. The story would deal with two retired boxers who return to the ring for one last extraordinary fight.

Back then it was said that the two boxers would be Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone, but the cast seemed like a fantasy. Now it is said that both stars are in negotiations and the movie will begin shooting next year.

In reality the most exciting thing about this announcement is seeing Rocky Balboa and Jake La Motta from ‘Raging Bull’ again, in what would be the most fantastic fight on the big screen.

The most concerning thing is that Segal will be the one to direct it and in reality he hasn’t done anything good since ‘Tommy Boy’ with Chris Farley, except for ‘My Fellow Americans’ and ’50 First Dates’.

The other problem is that the last comedic roles from De Niro have been disappointing, such as the ones in ‘Little Fockers’ and ‘New Year’s Eve’. On the other hand, Stallone hasn’t done a comedy since ‘Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot’.

We don’t really know how this movie will turn out, since it can easily end up being a disaster. But, maybe these two historic actors and iconic boxers can give us an incredible comedy, for the first time in a long time. It will remain to be seen.

First look at Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Poster

05.31.2012 | By |

First look at Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie' Poster

After Tim Burton’s recent Dark Shadows box office flop, he is trying his hand at a new animated comedy called “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. The first poster of the film is here and it looks like… ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ part 2. It’s Tim Burton‘s style so what do you expect. We hope to see a better follow up poster for the film, because this isn’t going to get me to the movie theater.

The premise focuses on a boy named Victor who after unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, he harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which elevates the classic style to a whole new experience. That’s like seeing ‘The Artist’ in 3D.

A great voice cast was assembled: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. Tim Burton directs, produces and came up with the idea.

Actually, when he originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984. As you can take a quick look below…

“Frankenweenie” follows in the footsteps of Tim Burton’s other stop-motion animated films “Corpse Bride” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”—both of which were nominated for Academy Awards®. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film.

Sick motion poster of horror film ‘Sinister’

Sick motion poster of horror film 'Sinister'

Summit Entertainment, the studio responsible for the “Twilight” film series, has revealed the first “motion poster” from the horror movie “Sinister“. These types of posters are scarce in the movie industry, but when they’re unveiled, they are hypnotic.

The plot, written by director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) stars Ethan Hawke, a crime novelist who moves his family to a house where gruesome murders of various families were carried out. His intention is to write the next great crime novel. But when he finds a box of home videos that shows other families being brutally murdered, he realizes that he may have made a big mistake by moving into the house. His investigation leads him to a supernatural entity that could now be looking to kill his family.

The premise of “Sinister” sounds intriguing and Ethan Hawke has become a reliable actor who is building a reputation of delivering a good performance a good film. If you don’t think so, watch TAPE from Richard Linklater.

The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio and James Ransone. “Sinister” makes its theatrical debut August 24.

High School

High School

Here’s another pointless, not very funny and brain dead teen comedy ‘High School’. It has a clear set, easy to follow pattern but it’s so formulaic, predictable and ridiculous that is hard to enjoy it. Yes there are some laughs and crazy scenarios, but not much different from other better teen movies that are actually fun and funny to watch to give a recent example ‘Project X’.

Senior Henry Burke (Matt Bush) is persuaded by the school’s biggest stoner Breaux (Sean Marquette) to try marijuana for the first time. In the meantime, principal Gordon (Michael Chiklis) enforces a mandatory drug test in the school, due to many students that have been caught under the influence. Afraid of getting expelled and loosing his college scholarship Henry teams up with Breaux, who comes up with the idea to get the whole school high by spiking the school’s bake sale of brownies. Their biggest obstacle is drug dealer Psycho Ed (Adrien Brody), who is out to hunt them after they steal his most powerful stash. They must find a way of avoiding the crazy drug dealer, as well as their school’s principal in order for their plan to work.

The movie seems to get just as high as the characters do, because the scenes get more ridiculous by the minute. It is a shame to see an actor like Brody taking part of such a mindless project, specially representing a character that has the concentration span of a goldfish. The movie has all the elements to be comedic as well as entertaining, but the premise just falls apart by the predictable scenarios, weak dialogue and nonsensical storyline.

There’s no reason to spend 100 minutes of your life in this movie, when there’s plenty of other teen comedies that have achieved the comedy this one tries very hard get.

First poster of Robert De Niro in 'Red Lights'

Here is another sign that Hispanics are climbing the Hollywood echelons …. Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés has a new thriller entitled RED LIGHTS where the legendary actor Robert De Niro one of the protagonists. Here is the first movie poster showing De Niro.

A psychological thriller which explores the human brain’s perception mechanisms and the diffuse frontiers between belief and science, RED LIGHTS starts out from the experiences of two rationalist scientists (Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver) who dissect phenomena from the metapsychic world, and the clash of forces with a world famous psychic they bring about. They must deal with the possibility of the supernatural when they meet with renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro). The past and the present of each the protagonists contain still unrevealed shadows, setting in train a dark story of growing tension, full of unexpected twists and turns.

The film was at Sundance Film Festival and had good reviews, but they say that the ending really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Cortes is expected to set the end when the film opens this summer.

“Red Lights” also stars Elizabeth Olsen and Toby Jones and opens July 13.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’: New Australian trailer!

05.29.2012 | By |

'The Amazing Spider-Man': New Australian trailer!

A movie trailer can often make or destroy a film, especially a blockbuster film. It all depends on which part of the story the studio decides to focus on. In the case of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, Columbia Pictures focused on telling the origins of Spider-Man and his search for his abandonment by his parents to American audiences. But that’s not the case in Australia where their new trailer for the arachnid hero is much more entertaining, more balanced with action and humor and less oriented to Spidey’s origins.

To be frank, this is the best preview of the film we’ve seen, and if American audiences had seen this first, we would be discussing how tough the competition would be against “The Avengers“. The American versions of the Spidey trailers are dark in tone, dramatic, and do not have the trademark humor with which we grew up reading in the Marvel comics and Saturday morning cartoons.

The Australian international trailer gives us some new scenes we can sink our teeth into such as The Lizard dialogue, and interactions with Parker and Gwen Stacy.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” opens on July 3 in the United States.
