Exclusive: First pics of Shalim and Trejo in ‘Bad Ass’

Exclusive: First pics of Shalim and Trejo in 'Bad Ass'

Shalim Ortiz, known from his work in the critically acclaimed Dominican film Yuniol, and the NBC series Heroes, doesn’t know it, “but he just f@cked with the wrong Mexican” – Danny ‘Machete‘ Trejo. What we mean is that Ortiz is teaming up with Trejo, Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Cronos, Sons of Anarchy) and Charles Dutton (Alien, Gothika) in a movie called ‘Bad Ass‘, which has still to have an official release date, but is rumored to be aiming for a Toronto Film Festival premiere, September 8-18th.

The plot for the film has Trejo playing Frank Vega, a Vietnam veteran and senior citizen, who becomes a YouTube sensation and local hero when he takes on political corruption and a vicious street gang in an effort to solve and avenge his best friend’s murder.

Shalim plays the 17 and 25 year old versions of Danny Trejo’s character, Vega, in the film. He’s a high school football star who leaves his girlfriend Lindsay behind to enlist in the army and serve in Vietnam. He proves to be a skilled, brave and dedicated soldier, earning a Purple Heart and suffering a severe leg injury. Upon returning home, Frank discovers that Lindsay has moved on and his job prospects are bleak.

Ortiz just wrapped up the production a few days ago in Oklahoma and is on a work frenzy as he has 7 films in the can and 6 in development, including the highly anticipated ‘Gardel‘ about the Argentinian raised tango icon, Carlos Gardel, who died tragically in a plane crash in 1935. He’ll play Pizarro, and most likely, will speak with an Argentinian accent. Let’ see how he pulls it off. The movie is set for release sometime in 2013.

Below are the first exclusive movie stills from Bad Ass.

The film is directed by Craig Moss (The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It), and produced by Ash Shah, Ben Feingold and Jim Busfield.

Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt cast in “The Dark Knight Rises”

Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt cast in “The Dark Knight Rises”

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend.

“When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”

Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.

Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster “Inception.”

The director stated, “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”

Heading the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane.

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

First look at Will Ferrell’s Spanish language comedy ‘Casa de mi Padre’

04.15.2011 | By |

We’ve been talking about this movie for almost 8 months now and the first trailer for ‘Casa de mi Padre‘ starring Will Ferrell in an historic all Spanish speaking role is finally here.

The comedy, which is told in an overly dramatic telenovela style (yes, the same ones from Telemundo), is going to be spoken fully in Spanish with English subtitles. Ferrell had to learn Spanish in one month for the role. For all intents and purposes, this is a Spanish language movie with the best actors from Mexico in Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

Ferrell plays Armando Alvarez who has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna), shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).

Rounding out the cast are Pedro Armendariz Jr., Hector Jimenez and Adrian Martinez.

Will Ferrell’s participation in the project is not entirely based on his connection with the material. Rather, he was embroiled in a pending lawsuit against Gary Sanchez. Ferrell’s participation is part of a closed-door settlement between both parties. Further details were not disclosed.

Matt Piedmont directed the movie, which is set for release this year. Ferrell is producing with his Gary Sanchez Prods. partners Adam McKay, Kevin Messick and Jessica Elbaum. Also producing are Emilio Diez Barroso and Darlene Caamano Loquet of NALA Films, which is fully financing the film.

Will Ferrell isn’t the only American white actor to act in an all Spanish film. Michael Cera will be doing the same for a movie with Sebastian Silva from Chile and Matt Damon recently revealed in an interview that he’s looking to work with Pedro Almodóvar soon.

Take a look at the trailer below and let us know your thoughts…

Watch the first 3 minutes of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II'!

The world wide web can sometimes be the worst enemy for many movie studios trying to keep secret its promotional campaign for its upcoming films, so as to not break the magic to the public. This is one of those cases.

Watch th first 3 leaked minutes of the upcoming film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2directed by David Yates, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Rupert Grint, amongst others. The video is not in high definition but recorded with a handheld camera (perhaps an iPhone?) with English subtitles.

What you’ll see is Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) asking about his wand to an elderly man at the opening of the final film. This is the video that Warner Bros. does not want you to see.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will be released in theaters nationwide on July 15 of this 2011. This scene will be featured on the DVD and Bluray of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 which will be released on April 15.

Let us know what you think of the scene.

Legendary director Sidney Lumet dies at 86

04.9.2011 | By |

Legendary director Sidney Lumet dies at 86

Sidney J. Lumet, a New York-based filmmaker whose work frequently focused on power, politics, and corruption, has died at the age of 86.

He had been suffering from lymphona.

Lumet, who came to prominence in 1957 with the classic courtroom drama “12 Angry Men,” spent much of his career portraying New York City as a cesspool of violence, filth and compromised ideals. In such gritty films as “Serpico” (1973), “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975), “Prince of the City” (1981) and “Night Falls on Manhattan” (1996), Lumet showed a dysfuctional city where the only certainty was that integrity was impossible to preserve. The first two starred Al Pacino in two of his most-acclaimed roles.

Lumet’s other prominent social-issue films included “Fail-Safe” (1964), a deadly somber tale (in contrast to Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove”) of the world accidentally brought to the brink of nuclear disaster, and “Network” (1976), a searing indictment of the corrosive power of television, particularly TV news. Neither film ended cheerily, which was generally true of much of his work.

Lumet made two prominent films with Sean Connery: “The Hill” (1965), a story of authority run amok in a British army prison, and “The Anderson Tapes” (1971), which showed a world where everyone was under surveillance seemingly all the time. “Running on Empty” (1988) dealt with Abbie Hoffman-like fugitives still on the run, and “Daniel” (1983) portrayed someone who seemed very much like the son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg . A 1986 film starring Richard Gere and Denzel Washington was simply titled “Power.”

In “Network,” he directed three actors to Academy Awards: Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight. Though he never won one in competition, Lumet was nominated for five Oscars, for “12 Angry Men,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Network,” “Prince of the City,” and “The Verdict” (1982). He was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2005.

The Philadelphia native’s other acclaimed films included “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (1962), “The Pawnbroker” (1965), and “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974). After a long dry stretch, his final film was 2007’s “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” a rich and disturbing effort about a family destroyed by greed and delusion.
