The Best Movies Of 2013 By Genre!

Best Drama: This is by far the best drama of 2013. It is the most emotionally arduous, punishing 2hrs you'll experience in a movie theater this year. Its level of cruelty will break you. This film is uncomfortable and emotionally disturbing to watch. All you’ll want to do is jump into the screen and put a hurt on these degenerate slave masters. But when films extract any type of emotion from us these days, it is admirable. We're very jaded and to be able to immerse yourself in a story is quite the treat. It is demanding and emotionally exhausting, but worth the effort. It's one of those rare movies whose effect is haunting.

Best Action Movie: The action sequences are just phenomenal and by itself are worth the price of admission. Then throw one of the most fierce IMAX 3D thrill rides I’ve experienced and one of the most interesting and likable villains in recent years, and you can’t go wrong with this movie.

Best Thriller: Most movies can provide some thrills, few can provide it consistently and with elite acting. 'Captain Phillips' showcases some of the best acting of the year and a tense plot that is completely enthralling. Don't miss the last 20 minutes where Tom Hanks elevates his acting to a whole other level.

Best Horror Movie: Relentless. It is the only word that sums up and justifies this movie experience. It's an incessant, nonstop series of horror sequences that doesn't give you a chance to breathe from the middle of the film until it ends. Just when you think it ends, the horror begins all over again. Where most horror films have a slow burn feel to it, director James Wan (Insidious, Saw, Dead Silence) picks up the tempo in this one. There is even some occasional humor at the beginning that fits perfectly well with the story. The characters an the acting are convincing, the scares and fright are right up there with the best of them and the production is top notch. One highlight I thought James Wan nailed, was bringing forth one of the more terrifying dolls since SAW. Just the mere look at her sends shivers down your spine.

Best Comedy: Today's comedies offer very little to laugh at, which is why 'This Is The End' has to be extolled for providing non-stop laughter. Perhaps the most attractive element of this film is the innovative concept of the actors playing themselves and not fictional characters. The result is historic. The chemistry between the actors are great, and although the story is another apocalyptic story, it feels fresh thanks to the chemistry of the cast. It is an instant cult classic.

Best Sci-Fi Film: When James Cameron says that Gravity is "the best space film ever done," well, what else do you have to say? In my humble opinion, Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity is the best space movie I have seen. It is perfect. It is outstanding at every level, from Cuarón’s groundbreaking state-of-the-art direction to the convincing performances to the edge-of-your-seat thrill ride script, finding a problem with this film will be almost impossible. What is even more outstanding is the perfect balance between high valued commercial entertainment and artistic filmmaking. It’s 3D is breathtaking and revolutionary, you empathize with the characters, you're wowed by the visual grandeur, your heart pounds at its relentless claustrophobic pace and you can’t believe you experienced all of it in 90 minutes. It's frightening, harrowing, and uplifting.

Best Dramedy: The cinematography, the brilliant representation of failure and defeat, the fantastic aggrieved performance from Oscar Isaac, are just some of the magical elements that make this film one of the years best. I'm not a fan of depressing movies and this is one of them, but... there's enough caustic humor here that manages to deflect some of the hard negative energy of the character and the film. The more in pain Isaac's character is in, the more the audience laughs, a classic Coen Brothers mark. Deep inside the DNA of the film, the core is about the everyday struggle to succeed and the resentment that comes along when one doesn't. One can become bitter, sensitive at constructive criticism, blind to others feelings and reticent and taciturn - all this has been captured magnificently by the Coen Bros. and Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis.

Best Romantic Comedy: Joseph Gordon-Levitt has seriously outed all men, stripped them of their most intimate kept secrets and handed them for the world to see. Very few times have I related so much with a movie's dialogue. Gordon-Levitt has made a romance movie for men worthy of praise. The acting was also on the money. Scarlett Johansson was as different as I've ever seen her in any role. I believe, she gives the best performance of her career here. Men, you'll laugh not from the comedy, you'll laugh nervously because you've been outed. Women, you'll be laughing because you'll remember that you've dated a guy or two like our titular character.

Best Romance Drama: The third film in the brilliant trilogy in the Richard Linklater saga of Jesse and Céline, the one outstanding highlight has got to be the dialogue. Linklater has a magical ability to open up the heart and dissect the complexities of human love like no one else. The dialogue he writes up should be put in a museum for future study since it manages to really hit the emotional core of anyone who has gone through the hardships of a relationship. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s comfortability on camera with each other is pure joy viewing. They’re so natural together that you don’t know if they were improvising or acting. The explosive last 30 minutes are cinema masterpiece where acting and dialogue unite to lay bare all of our most deeply concealed fears about marriage and eternal love. You’re in for a treat.

Best Documentary: A documentary that challenges former Indonesian death squad leaders to reenact their real-life mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

Best Animated Film: Creating a retro feel from classics such as 'Aladdin' and 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Frozen's' delightful vocal performances, the amiable characters and the brisk pace it carries is spot on. This movie is not from Pixar, it's a Walt Disney Animation Studios project that feels very reminiscent of some of the previous 2D films Disney did 2 decades ago. It possesses all the classic trademark elements from the Mouse: Happy/funny dialogue, music that puts a bounce in your step and the visually bright and colorful cinematography and even has a surprise plot twist that is very rare in the Disney universe. Most of the characters are fun and well crafted, which is exactly how I feel about the rest of the movie experience.

Best Spanish Language Film: A drama centered on an office worker on the verge of retirement who begins to relive both real and imagined memories.
