As a futuristic group of heroes prepares to save our galaxy from evil the only question in mind is: will a Dominicana jump on board and become “the deadliest woman in the whole galaxy?”
Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter learned exclusively that Dominican actress Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to play Gamora in the James Gunn directed “Guardians of the Galaxy.” If a deal is reached she would join Chris Pratt, who is playing Star-Lord, and Dave Bautista, who is playing Drax the Destroyer. No word on who would portray the remaining team members: Groot a fireproof tree-like creature and Rocket Raccoon an anthropomorphic animal skilled in shooting.
There is no doubt that Saldana would make the perfect Gamora. She has already familiarized herself with the galaxy as Uhura in “Star Trek” and is comfortable showing her blue-toned skin in very little clothing as Neytiri in “Avatar.” For this role, she would only have to trade in her blue skin for green and ta-da! A humanoid assassin is born.
Saldana would make a great addition to the film attracting not only the comic nerds with her beauty, skimpy wardrobe, and ass-kicking abilities; but also Latino and African American audiences craving for the next comic adventure, the same audiences that supported her in Stark Trek and Avatar. Directors know that because of her experience in these fantasy-type films and diverse fans following any film with her will have a higher chance of success so it is definitely a smart choice to bring her in.
We have our fingers crossed for Saldana to play Gamora because let’s face it we all know there is no one else more fitting for that role. Whether she takes it or not there is no doubt that in the past year she has been hard at work (and we hope this means plenty of award nominations and hopefully some wins!). Aside from the consideration of becoming part of the Guardians, “Blood Ties,” the controversial “Nina,” “Out of the Furnace” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” are all set to be released this year. She is also currently working on “Infinitely Polar Bear” and will soon reprise her character as Neytiri in “Avatar 2.”
“Guardians of the Galaxy” is set for an Aug. 1, 2014, release date.
