A Breakdown Of Latino Nominees In The 95th Academy Awards

01.24.2023 | By |

The 95th Academy Awards nominees have been revealed, and the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is leading the pack with 11 nominations. Top Gun has also been nominated for Best Picture with seven nominations, and it’s my top pick to take home the award.

This year, Latinos made a respectable showing with Cuban actress Ana de Armas earning a nomination for Best Actress for her role in Netflix’s “Blonde”. She joins Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” (2020), Salma Hayek, “Frida” (2002), Fernanda Montenegro, “Central Station” (1999), Catalina Sandino Moreno, “Maria Full of Grace” (2005) as just the fifth Latina actress to be nominated in this category.

In the Best International Film category, Argentina has another chance at bringing home the gold with their nomination for “Argentina, 1985”. This marks the sixth time the country has been nominated in this category, and they have previously won twice for “La Historia Oficial” (1985) and “El Secreto de Sus Ojos” (2009).

In the Best Animated Film category, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is nominated along with “Puss In Boots: Lost City”. Del Toro has already won two Oscars, and this may be his chance to take home his third.

And Alfonso Cuarón was nominated as a producer for his “Le Pupille” in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Honorable mention for Zoe Saldana who is in “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

Even though the film industry has been making progress in promoting diversity and representation, this year’s Best Picture nominees don’t show much of it. There is only one movie in Best Picture with actors of color. The Best Directing and Best Actor categories also don’t have many nominees of color, which shows the obvious…we still have ways to go.

On Sunday, March 12th, 2023, the legendary Dolby Theatre in Hollywood will host the 95th Academy Awards ceremony. The event will be telecasted on ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
