There have been a plethora of fan-made Superman trailers here and there, some of them even raising an eyebrow or two for its skill, but after I saw this trailer made by the very adroit YouTube host silverlightsaber, there is no need to see any other one. In my opinion, this is the definitive Christopher Reeve Superman trailer. I literally got chills watching it and hearing Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel composition. It made me appreciate even more the hero, the character and the story of Superman. Read More

With nearly 30 films in the July calendar, I was thinking of making your life easier by sifting through the garbage and choosing the very best July movies for you to see this very American month. In my professional opinion, there are only 7 movies that have the substance and entertainment value for you to invest your money free of concern. Why you need to see it: Debuting to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the gritty indie Fruitvale Station is already being talked about in Oscar conversations. Talk is The Weinstein Company fought hard to acquire it. I don’t blame them – its visceral last 30 minutes is powerful cinema. And here we have it. The first official photograph of Benicio Del Toro playing Colombian druglord Pablo Escobar in Paradise Lost. I had written an article about the news back in November of 2012 about Del Toro taking the gig after his “savage” performance in Oliver Stone’s Savages. He stole all the scenes in that film and the word was that he could even be nominated come award season time. Even though he wasn’t, his acting left a mark, and producers and directors were alert to him playing a drug lord in a leading role in the future. Read More

I have to say that when I first heard of Disney greenlighting The Lone Ranger, I had some major questions, in particular why Johnny Depp wasn’t in the lead role and whether action westerns are still a viable and economical avenue to amuse film-goers and generate a profit. Disney invited me to a sneak peek about a month ago and… I was pleasantly surprised. From the close to 20 minutes I saw, it was worth watching. Back in the 80s, Escape Plan would have been the movie of the year! Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same movie-going one-on-one in leading roles!? What!! That’s what I’m talking about. But now both are evidently old, still living off their glory day reputations. Stallone more than Schwarzenegger is in better shape and can still have hand-to-hand combat battles, but Arnold just looks frail (they were also seen in The Expendables, but that was more a cameo than anything by Arnold).
