Can Asian and Latino Unity Make ‘In The Heights’ Reach #1 At The Box Office? The upcoming film ‘In The Heights,’ which already accounts for a Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jon Chu collaboration, has A LOT riding on it. If a movie about Latinos fails, studios will view it as evidence that moviegoers aren’t interested in seeing Latino stories. This is a bigger problem for Hispanics than it already is. If it opens at #1, it could single-handedly open the floodgates to Latino stories being normalized on-screen.

A confession. I stopped watching movies for a while. Call it movie burn-out or the unequivocal fact that television is the new movies. Jack Rico’s Top 10 Movies Of 2016

It’s hard to look back at 2016 and not think how tragic it was to lose our beloved artistic icons. But when it comes to motion pictures, there were a couple of silver linings one can sanguinely lean on as bright spots. Though this was by far the year of superheroes and animated films, it was also the year where we witnessed the Golden Age of African-American storytelling. With remarkable films such as Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Birth of a Nation, Kicks, Loving, 13th and I Am Not Your Negro in theaters, the outlook for black cinema finally looks hopeful. Women and multiculturalism were also front and center on screen and behind the scenes and no film was more demonstrative of those attributes than Rogue One. Movies, in general, impact people differently and I believe the Top 10 Movies I have selected above not only reflect those qualities but provide the standard of excellence in cinema this year.
