Emmy Predictions 2019: No Latino In Major Categories

08.29.2019 | By |

Wouldn’t it be nice if the recent swath of Emmy prediction articles read something like this: “This year’s Emmys will revolve around television’s best two shows – ABC’s ‘Grand Hotel‘ and STARZ’s ‘Vida‘. Both Latino, and Latinx dramas provide colossal ratings, and grand performances, all while capturing our national attention.” Vinyl scratch. My fictionalized musing will have to wait for its heyday, but in the meantime, why don’t we play that prediction game people like so much?

Let’s begin with Best Drama Series.
The nominees are:

  • Better Call Saul, AMC
  • Bodyguard, Netflix
  • Game Of Thrones, HBO
  • Killing Eve, BBC America
  • Ozark, Netflix
  • Pose, FX Networks
  • Succession, HBO
  • This Is Us, NBC

And the winner is: Game of Thrones. With 32 nominations, and 47 previously won, GOT is irrefutably the most-watched, most-talked-about show of 2019. It was a cultural phenomenon, even in its last season. How can it not win?

Best Comedy Series

  • Barry, HBO
  • Fleabag, Prime Video
  • The Good Place, NBC
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video
  • Russian Doll, Netflix
  • Schitt’s Creek, Pop TV
  • Veep, HBO

And the winner is:  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has won everything in sight for years now. Why would that change all of a sudden? Yes, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag is a new show with a new voice and the way we see it with Veep is that it will win for best actress, not best show.

Best Lead Actress In A Drama Series

  • Emilia Clarke, Game Of Thrones, HBO
  • Jodie Comer, Killing Eve, BBC America
  • Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder, ABC
  • Laura Linney, Ozark Netflix
  • Mandy Moore, This Is Us NBC
  • Sandra Oh, Killing Eve, BBC America
  • Robin Wright, House Of Cards, Netflix

And the winner is: In the new world of inclusion Sandra Oh is queen. Killing Eve has surprised more than one critic and will continue to do so due to Sandra’s indelible performance.

Best Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

  • Christina Applegate, Dead To Me, Netflix
  • Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep, HBO
  • Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll, Netflix
  • Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek, Pop TV
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag

And the winner is: Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I mean do we really have to get into why?

Best Lead Actor In A Drama Series

  • Jason Bateman, Ozark, Netflix
  • Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us, NBC
  • Kit Harington, Game Of Thrones, HBO
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul, AMC
  • Billy Porter, Pose, FX Networks
  • Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us, NBC

And the winner is: Sterling K. Brown. Though Bob Odenkirk is a force with 13 nominations and 2 wins to date, Sterling is the face of the new era of primetime television. His recent two wins prove his talent and consistency.

Best Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

  • Anthony Anderson, black-ish, ABC
  • Don Cheadle, Black Monday, Showtime
  • Ted Danson, The Good Place, NBC
  • Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method, Netflix
  • Bill Hader, Barry, HBO
  • Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek, Pop TV

And the winner is: Bill Hader will no longer be ignored. After showcasing his talents on SNL, he also is nominated for writing and directing the show. Hader is the show, which is better than anyone else in this year’s tough category.
