Lady Gaga recently took her eccentricity to the next level and got butt naked in the name of art, later announcing it to her fans via Twitter. The video, part of the Marina Abramović Institute fundraising effort, remains a landmark moment in the singer’s early career when she began more aggressively blurring the lines between pop stardom and performance art.

Lady Gaga and the Marina Abramović Method

The video was part of a Kickstarter campaign for the renovation of the Marina Abramović Institute in Hudson, New York. Marina Abramović, a renowned performance artist, trained Lady Gaga for over 30 hours in what is known as the “Abramović Method,” a series of exercises designed to enhance physical and mental presence in the moment. In the video, Lady Gaga is seen pushing her body and mind to the limit by engaging in strenuous activities for extended periods.

Controversy and Artistic Intent

There was some controversy regarding Lady Gaga’s decision to be nude in the video. Abramović explained that Lady Gaga spontaneously decided to disrobe while performing an exercise in nature, aimed at intuiting her way back home. “She told me, ‘I’m ready, I want to do this,'” Abramović recalled about the pop icon’s commitment to the project.

Update March 2026
Since the early days of blurring the lines as an artist, Gaga has only pushed her work into more extreme territory. She moved from pop disruptor to a full-blown Oscar winner, specifically with her 2024 turn as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux opposite Joaquin Phoenix. Her seventh studio album, Mayhem (LG7), came out on March 7, 2025, and it’s as daring as anything she’s done.

On February 8, 2026, Gaga made a surprise appearance during Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX Halftime Show. The duo performed a viral version of her hit “Die With a Smile.” The choreographed salsa dance she performed with Bad Bunny showed the world her connection to the culture wasn’t for show. It confirmed what we’ve known since the start: Gaga isn’t just a pop star; she’s the real deal.
