The late Michael Jackson was a singer, songwriter, dancer, businessman, philanthropist and without a question the biggest super star in the world. From the start of his career at the age of 6 till now, 4 years after his death, MJ has been one of the greatest contributors to pop culture due to his unique dance moves, music and fashion. Not only did the singer break race barriers, helping to pave the way for other black artists to emerge in the mainstream music scene, he also influenced many entertainers around the world (Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jason Derulo, etc).
MJ’s music left an imprint so wide that he was able to inspire artists outside of his genre. Did you know that Latin artists far and wide covered many of his songs? From Colombian cumbia to ballads to salsa. MJ even sang a song in Spanish – “Just Can’t Stop Loving You” from the “Bad” album titled “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu”. Hopefully next year, Sony will be wise and create a tribute album in Spanish. THIS WEEK was the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream†speech. The American clergyman and activist delivered the speech in 1963, during the civil rights movement, at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in front of more than 250,000 people. In the speech King demanded the end of racism in the United States saying: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
At present, our country still faces many problems of equality, violence and even lack of self-love, but thankfully music is at the forefront bringing these issues to light and pushing for change. I woke up in Bilbao, Spain on Sunday and checked my Twitter account. To my absolute disbelief, I find out via my feed that ‘N Sync could be reuniting live at the MTV VMA’s 2013. My mind went dark for a sec. Last I heard, Justin Timberlake, The President of Pop, had said no to a reunion and JC Chasez adamantly denied EVER getting back together to The Hollywood Reporter. So what gives? Could these rumors be true? The “1-4-0″: @TWEMovie is a mix of the first 2 Pegg and Frost films – funny, witty, swift cuts and packs and emotional punch beneath it.
The Gist: After an attack of nostalgia, an ol’ high school friend decides to get the boys back together to finish what they started decades ago – complete 12 straight pubs until they reach the king of all pubs… The World’s End. But shit goes horribly wrong again when something stands in their way.
The Highlights: The fact that Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright made such an entertaining movie about such a ludicrous premise is just pure talent at work. This movie will connect with people. Why? It explores themes of nostalgia, regrets, bygone youth and growing up.
The Lowlights: The premise can be seen as the weakest link, but the guys make it work. There is a plot twist that is just ridiculous which has shades of Hot Fuzz’s storyline.
Pay or Nay?: Pay for it because it is a very funny film with a level of human connection. Ultimately, these are the types of movies Wright, Pegg and Frost do and we are just lucky to be witnesses to them!
