The Super Bowl, Red Hot Chilli Peppers & Social Media: How We Were Taken For Fools

01.30.2014 | By |

In short, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a new Super Bowl song called “Abracadabralifornia” that talks about your sexy ass grandma, balls, Burbank, and other really cool stuff. During the show they will also play the live version of Led Zepplin’s “Dazed and Confused” and did I mention that the group’s bassist, Flea might give us a flash of his privates?

Sounds like a promising show no? NO! It really doesn’t, and that’s because none of the above is true. Dear silly fans and media, stop taking jokes and parodies at face value, and then putting them on social media for the rest of the world to be confused. Thanks.

Earlier this week, NJ comedian, Tom Scharpling tweeted out the link to probably one of the most amazing parodies in music.  According to Stereogum.com, he was the first one to put it out and might be the one behind the whole scheme. The link, rhcp2014.com, leads the viewer to a pretty legit looking site that promotes “Abracadabralifornia” as the band’s Super Bowl song and asks viewers to tweet it out with the hash tag RHCP2014.

Although many listeners were doubtful that the song was real, many got caught up in the joke.

You really can’t blame them because the song actually sounds pretty good and has a lot of RHCP trademarks, but this just speaks to the fact that people don’t really pay attention to lyrics anymore. LOL!

Now in terms of the Led Zeppling tribute, did you know that the live version is about 30 minutes long?

Drummer Chad Smith has been probably having a great time making plenty of publications look foolish with this one. Thankfully, there are some folks out there who are knowledgeable enough to call out Smith’s bluff, as Spin did yesterday. Apparently, recently he felt sorry enough and called in to KROQ to set the record straight.

“People in the media are so gullible sometimes,” Smith joked. “We will, however, be performing side one of Rush‘s ‘2112.’ Obviously I can’t tell you what we’re going to do, it would ruin the surprise. Come on, you gotta watch, It’s gonna be great! Bruno Mars, we met them, his band are great people. Today I’m going to rehearse with them outside in the beautiful weather here in New Jersey, it’ll be a real spectacle, I’m looking forward to it.”

Finally, let’s get on with Flea’s privates.

His funny tweet probably reminded the NFL of Janet Jackson’s incident with Justin Timberlake back in 2004 because not too long after the he deleted it.  But, if we were playing something called two lies and a truth, this one would definitely be the truth. If you are a fan or at least know a bit about the band, you would know that the guys are all about being free and have appeared in concerts anywhere from shirtless to rocking their birthday suits.

After all of this whirlwind of rumors provided in part by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers I have to say I am ever more excited to tune in to the Halftime show this year.
