“La Pecera,” a film from Puerto Rico and Spain, touches on themes of personal freedom and choice in the digital age and addresses the ongoing issue of contamination caused by the U.S. Navy in Puerto Rico. The story tells of a religious grandmother who learns how to use the internet and confronts a dilemma when she stumbles upon pornography.

Another film, “Cassandro,” takes us on a journey into the world of Lucha Libre and tells the story of Saúl Armendáriz, a Mexican-American amateur wrestler from El Paso who achieves fame through his alter ego Cassandro, the flamboyant and iconic “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” The film explores themes of identity and representation within the macho world of wrestling, as well as the power of self-expression and breaking societal norms.

“Rotting in the Sun,” a meta-fiction narrative about Chilean director Sebastian Silva gone missing in Mexico City, is nothing in tone as “Radical,” also set in Mexico. It stars Eugenio Derbéz as a teacher attempting to inspire his students to greatness, based on a true story. These films offer Mexico as a backdrop for avant-garde cinema and inspirational dramas about overcoming obstacles.
