‘The Uninvited’ is not your prototypical horror, suspense film. It actually makes an attempt at telling a good dramatic murder story, unfortunately it falls short due to its dreadful dialogue and laughable climactic scenes… until the very end when the twist hits you like a ton of bricks. You never see it coming.

To be brief, the story, based on the 2003 Korean motion picture called “Janghwa, Hongryeon “, is about a family who lost their matriarch in an action-movie-like explosion only to have their youngest daughter (Emily Browning) be committed to an asylum due to the mental and emotional scars of the occurrence. After a period of time, our young protagonist returns home to learn that her father (David Strathairn) has moved on with his life and intends to marry his dead wife’s nurse (Elizabeth Banks). Bad blood brews between the two females and the journey to unmask the true objective of the nurse begins.

The pacing of this film is rather slow, mixed in with average acting and a banal dialogue that only exists to move the story along. The films true virtue lies in its ending and it really is the only worthy element of ‘The Uninvited’. Question is can you wait until the very end?

The Wrestler (Movie Review)

The film with the loudest buzz at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival was Darren Aranofsky’s The Wrestler – quite a change for the man who brought The Fountain to the same venues a couple of years ago to almost universal indifference. The Wrestler, on the other hand, excited interest from all corners and, just before its first screening, it was announced that Fox Searchlight had purchased the North American distribution rights. Almost immediately, the studio’s publicity department went into overdrive, and for good reason. This is the kind of film that inevitably will excite awards talk – for Mickey Rourke (Best Actor), for Marisa Tomei (Best Supporting Actress), for Aronofsky (Best Director), and for the film (Best Picture). It’s redemption for the filmmaker, who has regained the “critics’ darling” label applied to him following his debut feature, Pi and its forceful follow-up, Requiem for a Dream.

Rourke, in what may be the defining performance of a rocky career that appeared to have hit rock bottom, plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a one-time wrestling great who has been relegated by the rigors of declining health and advancing age to performing in small venues and doing autograph signings. Randy dreams of one day regaining his glory of 20 years ago, but even a lyric from a song on his radio – “Don’t know what you got till it’s gone” – tells a different story. When a heart attack fells Randy after a low-level bout, the doctor’s advice is unequivocal: give up wrestling or risk death. This compels Randy to re-assess things. Is life without wrestling – even what passes for “wrestling” at this stage of his career – any kind of life? He gets a job at the deli counter of a local supermarket, makes attempts to re-connect with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood), and tries to start a relationship with a stripper (Marisa Tomei) with whom he is friendly. The stripper’s story parallels Randy’s. Both are past-their-prime performers who find their services in ever-decreasing demand. (Note: Kudos to Aranofsky for showing a stripper who actually takes her clothing off, and to Tomei for performing the requisite nudity. Coupled with her work in last year’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Tomei has successfully shed a reputation for on-screen prudishness.)

As character studies go, this one is among the most powerful and compelling I have seen in some time. The film is meticulous in the ways it delves into Randy’s life, and it does so with verisimilitude and a lack of melodrama. The film provides a cornucopia of fascinating information about the behind-the-scenes goings-on at professional wrestling matches – how the violence may be choreographed but is often real. If this doesn’t reflect what really happens, it is presented in such a way that it’s completely believable. But this is icing on the cake. The meat of the story reflects Randy’s attempts to cope with what he has become and the delusions that keep him going. His honest but flawed attempts to regain a place in his daughter’s life are pathetic and heartbreaking. He has hurt her in ways we can only begin to imagine but, in one touching scene, we see that there is hope – at least for a flickering, fading instant. The Wrestler is like that: a mixture of hope and despair for someone that time has forgotten and deigns not to remember.

Aronofsky’s directorial style is simple and spare. There are no flourishes or attempts to convince us that he is a master of his craft. The straightforward approach works best, recalling a documentary without mimicking it. At many times, the perspective is that of a “fly on the wall.” We’re with Randy in his trailer or in the prep room before a match or in the ring. The immediacy is almost unsettling at times.

Mickey Rourke, who has been flying under the radar for nearly two decades, makes this a comeback to remember. Admittedly, Rourke has never quit acting. In fact, his filmography shows more than 30 credits since his heyday in the late ’80s and early’90s. With some notable exceptions (Sin City, for example), most of those have not been roles to brag about. Randy is Rourke’s first fully three-dimensional individual in a long time, afflicted not only with the foibles common to human beings, but the better impulses as well. He is in many ways a sad case – a man whose entire identity and self-worth are defined by the sport that has ruined his health and cast him aside. He lives in a trailer park in Northern New Jersey and can’t make the rent. His daughter despises him. He lives for the adulation of those few fans who still remember him. Rourke does not play Randy as someone who craves pity; he holds his head high and rolls with the punches (both literally and figuratively), even when they leave him broken and bleeding.

It’s not hard to understand why The Wrestler is getting so many plaudits from across the critical landscape. Even coming out as it is in the mid-December crowd of would-be Oscar contenders, it distinguishes itself. For Aronofsky, it’s easy to forgive The Fountain, if this is what comes from the hard lessons he learned following that minor misfire. Whether The Wrestler wins any awards is beside the point – the fact that it’s worthy of them is all that should matter to movie-goers who care about connecting with a unique and complex screen protagonist.

Awww…there’s nothing cuter than a little, big eared mouse with a sword. The Tale of Despereaux stars a little mouse named, Despereaux.

 

At an early age – his family and friends noticed he wasn’t your average mouse. He doesn’t cringe to the site of knives. He doesn’t fear cats. He laughs at the of mouse traps. He’s just one COOL mouse. The story starts in a kingdom called, Dor…and in this kingdom…they love soup…yes, I said soup. SOUP DAY that is – it’s a day of celebration!

Well, something bad happens…an accident (not going to tell you) where the king…broken hearted…decides to banish soup and KILL at rats. I know, I know – your saying to yourself, “Mike – what the heck does rats have to do with it?” – Well, go see the movie and you’ll find out. (lol)
 
This movie teaches you a lot of lessons – It has like 4 little stories all wrapped in 1 movie. This happens to be great family, holiday movie. There’s comedy, drama, action and adventure.
 
Just remember…size DOESN’T matter if you put your mind to it!

Slumdog Millionaire comes from director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, who fashion what is at heart a romance into a mystery and a thriller with Dickensian undertones. It’s tough not to think of David Copperfield when we see the “orphanage” to which the film’s main character is consigned during his youth. What’s more, this filmmaking team has found a new and inventive way to approach the storyline that not only invigorates the material but adds a whole new layer to it. The result is magical and life affirming, and will enrapture those who are not scared away by the mention of “subtitles.” For the record, the majority of the dialogue is in English, although there are lengthy segments during the film’s first 40 minutes when characters speak in Hindi. The way in which Boyle handles the subtitles is playful and colorful, and entirely unlike what we’re accustomed to see. This is a subtitle movie made with subtitle-phobes in mind.

 

In a way, it’s tough to believe that a film that begins with such a hard edge ends up being as enriching and deliriously joyful as this one. The opening sequences have an ominous undertone, with scenes of torture taking place in the bowels of some dark, dank police station. When the victim refuses to give the answers his captors expect, electrodes are attached to his toes and the power is turned on. This scene is one of the reasons why the MPAA in its wisdom elected to give Slumdog Millionaire an undeserved R instead of the coveted PG-13. Now, teenagers are unable to see the film without parental accompaniment – yet no such restriction limits the access to the cacophony of carnage that is Max Payne. Go figure. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a poor boy from the slums of Mumbai who finds himself center stage opposite a smug host being watched by 90 million people on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Improbably, Jamal is able to answer question after question, responding to the penultimate query and earning 10 million rupees just as time runs out for the episode. The next day, he will return with a chance at the biggest prize. However, that night, the police take Jamal in for questioning, certain that he has cheated. After being tortured, he explains to them how he knew the answer to every question. This results in a flashback-rich tour of Jamal’s life and the two recurring characters in it: his violent brother, Salim (Madhur Mittal), and the girl he loves, Latika (Freida Pinto). Growing up together, they were the “Three Musketeers” until circumstances tore them apart. It soon becomes apparent that Slumdog Millionaire isn’t actually about how Jamal did so well on a TV game show, but whether there will be a happy ending to his found her-lost her-found her-lost her-found her- lost her relationship with Latika. With Garry Marshall, a happy ending would be mandatory, but Danny Boyle isn’t nearly as conventional.

 

The film has all the elements necessary to make it a major winner in general release, and a dark horse Oscar contender. It’s superbly acted, wonderfully photographed, and full of rich, unconventional location work. Dev Patel has us rooting for the shy, good-natured Jamal from the beginning. Freida Pinto is beguiling as Latika. Anil Kapoor, a big name in Bollywood, is deliciously devious as the gameshow host whose motives are ruled by more than a desire to see his program get good ratings. Imagine Alex Trebek after having been seduced by the dark side of the force. The story works on multiple levels – it can be seen as a sweeping romance, as a thriller, or as a glimpse at the ways in which a fast-developing economy is convulsing the fabric of Indian society. Some of the film’s funniest and most satirical scenes occur within a massive call bank where customer service operatives try to convince callers that they are not, in fact, located in a foreign country. The movie ends with a grand Bollywood song-and-dance number that is not to be missed. Placed between the conclusion of the story proper and the end credits, this sequence dares anyone to leave the theater in anything but the best of spirits.

 

Some films keep viewers on the outside looking in, able to appreciate the production in technical terms but not on other, more basic levels. This is not the case with Slumdog Millionaire. Boyle’s feature draws the viewer in, immersing him in a fast-moving, engaging narrative featuring a protagonist who is so likeable it’s almost unfair. The movie has moments of heartbreak and tragedy but it is ultimately uplifting and contains pretty much all the instances an audience will want. Boyle has come a long way to get to this point from Shallow Grave and Trainspotting but, after experiencing the pleasure of Slumdog Millionaire, I’m glad it’s a road he has elected to take. (“I am located just around the corner from you, Ma’am…”)

Let’s be frank (no pun intended). This review really isn’t needed. 

The latest installment of the ‘Transporter’ series is everything you expect it to be: one ridiculous action sequence after another with a senseless romantic plot sandwiched in between.  But who says that’s a bad thing?

Frank Martin (Jason Statham), a former Special Forces officer and now a highly skilled courier for the underworld world, has been pressured into ‘transporting’ Valentina (Natalya Rudakova), the kidnapped daughter of Leonid Vasilev, a top Ukrainian politician, all across Europe.  But things get pretty ugly for him when he has to contend with the people who strong armed him to take the job, the special agents sent by Vasilev to intercept him, and his unruly passenger.  If you haven’t seen the first two films, you’ll quickly pick up on its simple premise. 

Oh yes, one other matter of hilarious complication. On this particular run, Frank is forced to wear a high tech bracelet which is programed to explode if he gets too far from his Audi S8.  And so he speed races through Europe stopping only to battle dozens of henchmen that are on his tail using his masterful kung fu skills – all within 50 feet of his car, of course.

If nothing else, Transporter 3 is hysterical. The implausibility of all the stunts should be enough to keep you entertained for a couple of hours. And the fact that it takes itself so seriously makes it even funnier. If you’ve seen ‘Crank’ (my personal favorite Statham film), I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. 
 
It is what it is.  A kung fu movie with fast cars and a British accent.

Now we all know the effects a big turkey dinner can have. So if you’re looking for a film to watch on Thursday night, perhaps ‘Transporter 3’ is a better choice than the 3 hour epic which also opens this weekend.

Let me tell you people…I haven’t laughed that hard in a longgggg time. I’m telling the truth…you laugh from the beginning to the end! NO LIE.

It’s basically about two guys who work for a energy drink company…Paul Rudd who plays, Danny…well, his girlfriend breaks up with him…totally crushed…he decides to go off during a high school speech…after being kicked out…their Minotaur truck gets towed…a huge fight breaks out…and their arrested.
 
Instead of doing jail time…they are told they have to do 150 hours of community service at Sturdy Wings. (like a Big Brother’s Program) They have become mentors.
 
Danny gets a kid named Augie…who’s into REAL FANTASY roll playing. (Watch the trailer)…Wheeler is mentoring, Ronnie…this little black kid…who is funny as hell. You have to see it for yourself.
 
This is a great Rated R movie…cussin, boobies, fighting, biting, screaming, drinking…a good ass movie. I’m actually going to see it again.
