Batman, er, Christian Bale, is starring in his first film since The Dark Knight Rises and it looks promising. ‘Out of the Furnace,’ the drama/thriller about the love between two blue-collar brothers, stars Bale along with Casey Affleck. The release date will be December 6, 2013 and is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Get Low), produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott.
Also, the cast is rounded out by Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Dominican actress Zoë Saldana and Sam Shepard.
Synopsis: Here comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so – with nothing left to lose – Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.

In a really, really, really bad year for animated movies, we finally get to see, perhaps, the frontrunner to the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars – Frozen – from Walt Disney Animation Studios (Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph). Its toughest competitor will most likely be The Wind Rises by legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle). Sixteen movie releases. This is one of the rare weeks where half of the new Hollywood releases are documentaries and my most anticipated viewing is a documentary as well – Salinger. What is it? Perhaps it’s the Labor Day dates that aren’t too kind to studio pockets, perhaps it’s the public demand for more informative films and less escapism. “Why read a book when you can watch the documentary?” Or maybe it’s just a coincidence. Whatever the principal reason is, blockbuster films are about to become persona non-grata in the next few months when Oscar season rears its head for the Fall. An interesting note is that after the success of the Latino movie “Instructions Not Included,” Hollywood will have their eyes wide open for Tio Papi and Mission Park‘s results.

His new movie The Monuments Men, which he directs, writes, stars, produces and is even credited with stunt work, is another interesting story idea from the man that loves to look underneath a rock and find the small gems in stories that have been over told. The second trailer for Marvel’s ‘Thor’ sequel, ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ is here. The new movie looks more polished than before, but still holds that trademark Marvel humor. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) seems to be a big part of the story line – why wouldn’t he? Every geek knows that Hiddleston is the most popular actor in the Marvel universe right now, even rivaling Robert Downey Jr! The movie will be released November 8th, 2013.
