Four Christmases

It’s still the #1 movie at the box office. What movie am I talking about you may ask?? Four Christmases, starring Vince Vaughn and “Sexy Cute” Reese Witherspoon. It has a great cast such as Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, John Voight, Tim McGraw, Jon Favreau, and more!

The movie starts off with a couple who are totally in love, but soon find out  that they REALLY don’t KNOW each other. The Christmas holidays roll around…instead of hanging with their family, they decide to lie…once again…to plan a trip to Fiji…but the weather messes everything up so they are forced to visit their 4 seperate families…and these families are nuts.

If you happen to “family hop” during the holidays – you’ll definately can relate. (lol)

You sure laugh a lot and during these hard times – we all could use it.

Frost/Nixon

David Frost, a british entertainment interviewer obtains a confession that no one else can from President Richard Nixon on prime-time TV in the 1970’s. That is the plot line from ‘Frost/Nixon’, a compelling retelling of that story and the consequences it had on each one of them after that historic broadcast.

The film, in essence, is a direct shot by shot remake of the London and Broadway versions of the play. The Broadway version I saw in 2007 was powerful and dramatic and showcased the acting mastery of one Frank Langella (Nixon), who went on to win a Tony award for his portrayal of the late President. Langella didn’t then, nor now, look or sound much like the late 37th President, yet, through sheer force of performance, he embodies Nixon. Logically speaking, given the theater award, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be among the candidates for an Oscar award as well. Michael Sheen (Frost) was definitely the supporting actor here playing off the instincts and skill of Langella.

In essence, the movie is a about two people who are losing their social and market value in society and their need to regain it. That plot pales in comparison to the true centerpiece mano a mano interview both men have. The stage and film version invest all their time and effort into making this, “the clash of the century”, “the dual of death”, into the definitive verbal battle in political and media history.

Even though liberties are taken with the facts to create moments of dramatic tension throughout the film, Frost/Nixon manages to capture a glimpse into the life of one of the most controversial figures in the history of American politics.

The acting performances is what director Ron Howard (The DaVinci Code, Apollo 13) bets the house on. He managed to obtain convincing and captivating performances, yet everything else was secondary for him and it showed.

If you’re not into politics nor the media industry, then Frost/Nixon won’t titillate you that much. If the contrary applies, especially after experiencing the energy and results of our recent presidential campaign, this film is just the right dose of politics you’re looking for.

Del Toro and Cuaron to do ‘The Witches’

12.4.2008 | By |

Del Toro and Cuaron to do 'The Witches'

It was announced back in 2006 that Alfonso Cuaron would direct and Guillermo del Toro would produce a remake of the film, which could easily turn into a mega-franchise. New details have finally surfaced online, which report that producer Guillermo del Toro might direct!

In the original 1990 film a young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse…

Empire got the exclusive low down on Alfonso Cuaron’s involvement in “THE WITCHES”, which would put Del Toro in the director’s chair.

“Although it was rumoured that Cuaron was down to direct, it seems that he will instead be producing, while legend-in-the-making Guillermo Del Toro [taking] the helm,” reports Empire.

“The pair were discussing the potential of adapting the much naughtier Dahl story Uncle Oswald, when the conversation turned to The Witches. Cuaron told us: ‘Guillermo wrote this amazing screenplay really quickly.’

He also said that, ‘It won’t be like the original Nicolas Roeg version, which was a beautiful film,’ because (and this is the very exciting part), del Toro plans to ‘do it completely in stop-motion animation.’ We will just have to wait and see how they could ever replace Roeg’s army of cross-dressing bald-headed extras, however. “

Oscar season begins! 'Frozen River' wins big at Gotham Indie Awards

Courtney Hunt‘s “Frozen River” took best feature at the 18th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards Tuesday night in New York, while Tia Lessin and Carl Deal‘s “Trouble the Water” won best documentary during the ceremony held at Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. “Frozen River”‘s Melissa Leo also won the Gothams’ breakthrough actor award.

“I did not see this one coming, I did not see this coming,” said Courtney Hunt, accepting the best film prize. She started by thanking her husband “who raised the fucking money (for this movie),” and also thanked Michael Barker and Tom Bernard from Sony Pictures Classics for supporting, “this little chick film.”

The wins at the Gotham Awards came on a day when the film also dominated the nominations for the annual Spirit Awards. “Frozen River” received seven Spirit nods, including best feature.

“I knew that the role was a role I could drive home,” Gotham Award winner (and Spirit nominee) Melissa Leo told indieWIRE earlier today, “And that the story was gripping and had meaning that’s worth its merit. But this… it’s quite miraculous.” At the Gothams this evening, Leo praised New York City as “the birthplace of independent film, truly indepndent film.” She also saluted IFP for their ongoing support of indie film.

“Hurricane Katrina showed us a lot about ourselves,” noted Carl Deal, aceepting the best documentary award with co-director Tia Lessin, praising the film’s subjects and the many people they worked with, also singling out Zeitgeist and now HBO which has signed a TV deal for the acclaimed documentary.
Both “Frozen River” and “Trouble the Water” won best feature and documentary respectively at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival where they debuted.

Also taking home Gotham accolades were Lance Hammer (“Ballast”), another Sundance fest winner, who took the breakthrough director award. Accepting the prize, Hammer thanked the IFP for their early support of his work, saying they supported him, “when I was just a schmuck.” And he singled out his cast, many of whom were in attendance with him at the event.

The casts of “Synecdoche, New York” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” shared the best ensemble performance award, while the Gothams’ “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You” nod went to “Sita Sings the Blues” by Nina Paley, receiving a $15,000 grant. “In a way I’d like to thank all the distributors who aren’t distributing the film,” Paley said. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”

Four tributes were also presented Tuesday evening in addition to the six jury prizes. Actor Penelope Cruz, HBO Documentary Films’ Sheila Nevins as well as directors Gus Van Sant and Melvin Van Peebles were honored during the two-hour ceremony. Van Peebles was praised “as the grandfather of American independent cinema.” “My wildest dream was not as big as this evening,” Van Peebles said, “But it’s not about me…” saluting the IFP, its support of filmmakers and American indie movies. “I am very very pleased to be here in these times,” he said, “There is this possibilty that you can do it.”

Twenty-two films received nominations in the awards’ six categories. Selecting this year’s nominees were 18 critics, journalists, and film programmers. Final award recipients were determined by separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, casting directors, composers and others directly involved in making films.

Penelope Cruz – Oscar winner this year?

12.3.2008 | By |

Penelope Cruz - Oscar winner this year?

Penelope Cruz, Mickey Rourke, and Kate Winslet are some of the names being talked about for the Oscars.

“To me, she’s the best actress around right now,” said Dennis Hopper, Penelope’s co-star in Elegy, at the 18th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York.

“She gives good performances this year – one in Woody Allen’s film Vicky Cristina Barcelona and one in Isabel Coixet’s Elegy – and they’re two of the best performances I’ve seen in years.”

Scott Franklin, producer of The Wrestler, revealed he has high hopes for his leading man Mickey.

“I think he’s being considered for all these accolades because he really brought a lot of honesty to it,” he said.

“I think he really dove into the material. He had a tremendous and honest working relationship with Darren (Aronofsky, director) – they trusted each other and that allowed Mickey to be free, and to really be himself and to go to places he needed to go to be Randy ‘Ram’ Robinson. He did a really great job. I hope he’s as proud of his own performance.”

Lena Olin had only compliments for Kate’s acting, whom she co-starred with in The Reader. There is buzz surrounding the British starlet for Revolutionary Road.

“She’s just so down-to-earth and so real. She’s an amazing woman. She’s very open, she seems to have good contact with her emotions, I think she’s worked very hard. She deserves it.”
