Finding Nemo 3D

09.10.2012 | By |

Finding Nemo 3D

Pixar’s ‘Finding Nemo 3D’ directed by Andrew Staton comes to us nine years after it was released in May 30th, 2003. Obviously technology has advanced so much in this amount of time, that Pixar chose the right time to put one of their most successful films in a 3D format. I felt honored to have been a part of a very small group of people that got to see the film in 3D in Pixar Studios’ very own movie theater, before anyone else in the world. We received a presentation before the film by Bob Whitehill Pixar’s stereoscopic supervisor and Joshua Hollander Pixar’s director of 3D production. They explained to us how time staking the process of converting an old film to 3D is. Starting by the fact that they had to convert the files careful not to harm the original, fix colors and mistakes from the previous one, they also had to do a lot of rendering to give it depth. The team wanted to get it just the same but with a higher resolution, to give it about 144% more detail, to bring it to a level of comfortable viewing.  It took them about a year and a half to convert the film. Knowing all of this before the film really made me and helped me appreciate it even more.

I felt like this was the very first time I saw the film, it already is so full of color that seeing it in 3D and high definition really takes you into the environment of the movie. A whole new generation of children that haven’t been introduced to this story will get to view it as never before, with its crisp clear colors, depth and beauty. If you loved the movie when it came out in 2003, you will love it even more now; it will feel like you are swimming in the ocean right along the characters. Pixar made a very wise decision to re-release this film in 3D and high definition in theaters September 14th as well as in Blu-ray 2D and 3D December 4th, 2012.

For those that don’t know the story, ‘Finding Nemo’ follows the adventurous journey of Marlin (Albert Brooks) a clownfish who gets separated from his beloved son Nemo (Alexander Gould) from their home in the Great Barrier Reef, where a dentist decides to capture him and give him a home in the tank in his office. In his search Marlin befriends Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a forgetful fish that accompanies him throughout the ocean to rescue his son. Both clownfish find out things about themselves in their journeys and become heroes in their efforts to reunite and get back home.

The reason why ‘Finding Nemo’ was so successful when it premiered wasn’t only because of the beautiful animated images, but most of all because of the amazing journey the story takes us through. Despite of the fact that I’ve seen the film a number of times, I was still fully entertained for the duration of it, it gave me chills of joy and I relieved the whole story as if it were my first time experiencing it. I can certainly say I left Pixar Studios completely satisfied and excited to share with all of you the amazing experience.

‘Fidning Nemo’ was already such a success: having wan the Oscar in 2003 for Best Animated Feature, named among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made by the American Film Institute, being the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time and remaining the fifth highest grossing animated film worldwide.  So, why bother converting it to 3D and why even spend money on watching a film your children have probably made you watch countless times? Well they made something that was already close to perfection, completely perfect, this is a whole new way of experiencing the sea voyague. Everyone that worked on this movie to convert it to 3D did such an amazing job and made it’s worth relieving this masterpiece that is completely at home in 3D format. The extra bonus you get from watching ‘Finding Nemo 3D’ in theaters is Mark Walsh‘s amazing short 3D film ‘Partysaurus Rex‘ right before the film, it definitely gets the party started (Click on the link below for a full review of the short film). What’s even better? Pixar is making ‘Monsters Inc.’ into 3D and it will be re-released in December 19th, 2012. There are rumors that more of Pixar’s beloved films will be re-released in 3D, so we have a lot to look forward to!

The 9 Must See Movies of September 2012!

09.7.2012 | By |

Summer is now over and with it, some pretty horrible films (The Apparition, Piranha 3DD, The Watch). We welcome the Autumn, with open arms and a slew of thought-provoking cinema worth spending your time indulging in. So to cleanse your palate a bit from the garbage of Summer, here are the best 9 movies you need to see for the month of September. Some we’ve already seen, some we’re betting our reputation on. There are no bad films on this list, just movies that you’d have a blast watching or debating with friends at dinner.

9. REC 3 (Horror, September 7th)
Plot: A couple’s wedding day turns into a horrific events as some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness.
Why you should see it: Spanish language horror movies have become highly respected in Hollywood due to the inventiveness and ingenuity of the stories that Spanish directors   and writers come up with. The REC series from Spain is perhaps the most famous and successful of them all. Part 1 was a game changer and Hollywood remade as ‘Quarantine’. Part 2 was relentless with its fast paced action and gore and now Part 3 blends humor with all the action and blood we’ve been accustomed to. You won’t find a better horror franchise in the 21st century than REC.

8. Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel (Documentary, September 21st)
Plot: A look at the life and work of the influential fashion editor of Harpers Bazaar, Diana Vreeland.
Why you should see it: Whether you are a fashionista or not, the story of Diana Vreeland is worth knowing. She changed a business, redefined it and left a legacy that we still celebrate. The story is told efficiently with visually pleasing pictures and eminent guests. At some point you’ve read or heard of magazines Harper Bazaar’s, Vogue and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala. She left her imprint on each one of them making her a genius in her craft. Stories about geniuses should be told, especially if the person whose life-story is being narrated is an honest, enlightening and exuberant character.

7. Looper (Sci-Fi, Drama, September 28th)
Plot: In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to ‘close the loop’ by transporting back Joe’s future self.
Why you should see it: Bruce Willis called this movie, “one of the best thing he’s ever been in” and he’s been in some classics. It is also a mentally stimulating movie. Just that alone is a principal reason. Of course, you also have a fantastic cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo, and Paul Dano. ‘Looper’ is a high quality movie. It has a Christopher Nolan visual and essence to it, though Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) directed and wrote it. The story is really innovative, absorbing, well thought out and most importantly, not too hard to follow. It was fun unraveling the puzzle that Johnson puts us in. Only Nolan is making these types of movies and I for one welcome anyone who is creating cerebral movies such as this.

6. Liberal Arts (Comedy, Drama, September 14th)
Plot: When 30-something Jesse (Josh Radnor) returns to his alma mater for a professor’s retirement party (Richard Jenkins), he falls for Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), a college student, and is faced with a powerful attraction that springs up between them.
Why you should see it: Authentic, insightful, earnest, amusing and charming is what you get with Josh Radnor’s sophomore film ‘Liberal Arts’. As the central character of CBS’ hit sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor wrote, directed, produced and starred in it. I’m not necessarily an advocate of people who wear too may hats in a movie because something has to give. But Radnor seems to be versatile enough and talented enough to pull it off. The characters in the movie are ones that you can relate and empathize with. You’ve met them in one way or another at some point in your life: the nerd, the man who has one more in him, the ingenue who is ahead of her years, etc. But it’s the story that makes this small film worth the watch. While making a social commentary on nostalgia and its place in our lives, Radnor offers us a story with life substance and interesting debates on literature, music and life decisions. All in all, this indie film delivers the goods.

5. Toys in the Attic (Animation, Family, Fantasy, September 7th)
Plot: A teddy bear, a mechanical mouse, and a marionette join forces to save their kidnapped friend, Buttercup the doll, from the denizens of the Land of Evil.
Why you should see it: Stop-motion animation is perhaps the most arduous and onerous of all filmmaking methods. It can take 2-5 years depending on the challenges, but ultimately, the results are nothing less than extraordinary. Toys in the Attic is such a film, one that titillates the senses and leaves behind a long lasting imagery worthy of multiple views. It is imaginative, artistic and compelling. Kids and adults will benefit from seeing a true visual beauty.

4. End Of Watch (Crime, Drama, September 21st)
Plot: Two young LAPD officers (Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña) are marked for death after confiscating a small cache of money and firearms from the members of a notorious Mexican cartel, during a routine traffic stop.
Why you should see it: Talk about GRITTY. If it’s urban violence you want with two really fantastic performances rolled up in a doc indie style, than this is what you’re looking for. What you might not be looking for and will be pleased to get is some remarkable acting from Michael Peña. You know what you’re going to get from Gyllenhaal, but it’s Peña that surprises and overdelivers here with his passionate and intense acting. Peña, in my mind is one of the top 20 actors in film right now. If you don’t believe me, watch ‘Crash’, ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’, even the comedy ‘Observe and Report’. He’s guaranteed to make your movie better by just being part of the cast. The film is intense, honest, entertaining and has you consistently at the edge of your seat. The ending… well that’s another story. You’ll either love it or hate it.

3. Dredd (Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller, September 21st)
Plot: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
Why you should see it: While it is a complete rip-off of the Indonesian action flick ‘The Raid: Redemption’, ‘Dredd 3D’ could be, along with ‘The Raid,’ the best action films of 2012. It’s a non-stop action extravaganza, it’s relentless with its violence and pacing. There’s not much character development here and it doesn’t matter. Throw in the best 3D and sound of the year and you have yourself a damn good entertaining movie.

2. Arbitrage (Drama, Thriller, September 21st)
Plot: A troubled hedge fund magnate desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help.
Why you should see it: This is hands down our favorite thriller of 2012. Richard Gere is in rare form and gives us one of the best performances of his career. The story is enthralling, the cast performances are full of conviction and the pacing is never dull. This is what Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street 2’ should have been.

1. The Master (Drama, September 14th, expanding from September 21st)
Plot: Loosely based on Scientology, a Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future – until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader.
Why you should see it: If there was ever a movie to see not only this month, but this year, it is ‘The Master’. After the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes divorce, the timeliness of a Scientology inspired movie will attract a curious crowd to see the so called origins of the religion. We’re predicting Best Picture and Best Actor win for the film and Joaquin Phoenix. Why? One name… Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) a three time Oscar nominee. He is considered a film master and under his directional style, the subject matter and the performances, there is no doubt the film will be an immediate frontrunner in all the major categories this award season.

We had an exclusive chance to talk to the sound designer Ben Burtt and visual effects director Dennis Muren from the Indiana Jones movies at the one an only SkyWalker Ranch in San Francisco, California. They were able to tell us some secrets about how it all came together back when it was made, their memories of it all and what were some of the challenges they had to face. Read More

5 behind-the-scenes pics of new IMAX ‘Indiana Jones’!

09.5.2012 | By |

5 behind-the-scenes pics of new IMAX 'Indiana Jones'!

Raider’s of the Lost Ark’ returns to theaters 31 years after its original release completely restored to be released on select IMAX for only one week in September 7, 2012, and on 69 of AMC’s theaters across the country a marathon of INDIANA JONES will be help on September 15th, presenting: ‘Raider of the Lost Ark’, ‘Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’. This will be followed by a Blu-ray release of ‘Indiana Jones: The complete Adventures’ on September 18, 2012 which features seven hours of bonus material, with a two-part documentary called ‘On Set with Raiders of the Lost Ark’, also an hour of rarely seen on set footage and interviews with director Steven Spielberg, Executive producer George Lucas and Harrison Ford.

I have to admit that I haven’t seen ’Indiana Jones: Raider’s of the Lost Ark’ probably since I was a little kid, which is no surprise since this first Indy film came out in 1981. So, it’s fair to say that seeing it in the AMC IMAX theater that Paramount took us to was as if I were seeing it for the very first time, as I recall very little of it. Seeing it on IMAX though was fantastic as the high definition quality of the picture really brings out the colors and clarity in the film and now I can see why women go crazy over Harrison Ford, he was a total hunk when he was younger.

The film was restored into the image and sound quality that is expected of IMAX, with careful attention to preserving the original look, sound and feel of the original. The problem is that we’ve grown so accustomed to the special effects and thrills that technology has given us that some of the action scenes look almost silly; but they are still certainly fun to watch. The dialogue is certainly outdated, but it gives us a look back as to how movies were 30 years ago. The IMAX experience was very rewarding and still very entertaining.

The next morning after a late viewing of the film, we were taken up to George Lucas’ very own SkyWalker Ranch, about an hour outside of San Francisco in a dense area where deer were out running around the hills. As we arrived we drove past the main house to the tech building, where we had a brief press conference in the in the beautiful in house movie theater with sound designer Ben Burtt and visual effects director Dennis Muren.

After the press conference we were given a very special exclusive treat…a trip to Lucasfilm Archives! There we were surrounded by objects and artifacts used in the ‘Star Wars’ movies like a life size R2-D2 and Chewbacca mask, also there was a different display for each one of the Indiana movies starting with his usual archeologist outfit, hat, whip and all, followed by the main treasures of each movie such as the Ark from the first and the Crystal skulls from the last. Truly, a fan’s dreams come true!

They also explained to us how an Indiana Jones adventure called “Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology” which first opened in Montreal’s Science Center and then went on to Valencia’s Ciudad de Las Artes y Ciencias; will premiere in the United States at Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California on October 12,2012 and will continue until April 21, 2013. The exhibition, which will be about 10,000 square feet, is equipped with a personal video companion, where visitors can go on a quest to find the real origins of archaeological mysteries. It contains materials from the Lucasfilm Archives, as well as videos from the National Geographic Society and Penn Musuem.

After this gratifying experience we took a short walk around the surroundings of the Tech building where we saw grapevines and other crops in a lovely, peaceful scenario accompanied by a small lake.

Needless to say that the die-hard fans of Indiana Jones have all the things listed on here to look forward to. It sure will be a treat for the generations that grew up watching the films and for the new ones being introduced to them.

09.4.2012 | By |

'The Possession' #1 on Labor Day Wknd

The horror film ‘The Possession’ which claims to be based on true events, took the number one spot for Labor Day weekend with $21.3 million dollars. The film surprised many by doing so well; it has even gotten compared to ‘The Exorcist’ and although it’s rated PG-13 it does the job.

Lawless’ a movie about moonshine that is headlined by a star-studded cast, landed the second spot with $13 million dollars. Despite of the great reviews not only by critics but moviegoers themselves the film didn’t do as well as expected, considering that it opened two days before the three day weekend.

Finally, the movie that has been number one for the last two weeks, ‘The Expendables 2’ falls to the third spot with $11.2 million dollars. This way the summer box office closes, giving way to the fall line up which offers plenty of movies we can’t wait to see!

The Top 10 Movies in the Box Office are:

1. The Possession – $21.3 mil

2. Lawless – $13 mil

3. The Expendables 2 – $11.2 mil

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, dead at 54 from heart attack

09.3.2012 | By |

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, dead at 54 from heart attack

Michael Clarke Duncan a loveable and gracious man and actor has died today from a heart attack. He was 54. According to his fiancee, the Oscar nominee for “The Green Mile” passed away while being hospitalized following a July heart attack, two months ago.

Publicist Joy Fehily released a statement from Clarke’s fiancée, the Rev. Omarosa Manigault, saying the 54-year-old actor died Monday morning in a Los Angeles hospital after nearly two months of treatment following the July 13 heart attack.

The 6-foot-5, 300 pound Duncan appeared in dozens of films, including such box office hits as “Armageddon,” ”Planet of the Apes” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

Duncan had a handful of minor roles before “The Green Mile” brought him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. The 1999 film, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, starred Tom Hanks as a corrections officer at a penitentiary in the 1930s. Duncan played John Coffey, a convicted murderer.

Here’s a movie clip that best remembers his work:

The Possession

09.2.2012 | By |

The Possession

May people have been asking me if they should go see the exorcism film ‘The Possession’ this weekend. Even though, it is a PG-13 horror film, it is a serviceable film and much better than the desultory, aimless and unscary ‘The Apparition’. The Possession offers a better cast, a better story, a better production and most importantly, more frights for your bucks.

The plot goes like this: a young girl (Natasha Calis) buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl’s father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) teams with his ex-wife (Kyra Sedgwick) to find a way to end the curse upon their child.

I’m not a fan of PG-13 horror movies. The shocks are not harsh nor violent because they’re geared for someone between 13-18 years to see. I think they should not be allowed a release. They need to be rated R to really maximize their potentials. The Exorcist, with its ten Oscar nominations back in 1973, was rated R. Nevertheless, the reality is that we’re being given PG-13 fright flicks whether we like it or not, so why not sift through them and pick the ones that do the most modest job and The Possession isn’t embarrassing.

The film develops slowly, you have to have some patience for it. But the acting isn’t half bad. It’s my biggest pet peeve with these genre movies, they usually can’t seem to convince any quality actors to perform in them, but I had a good time with it, much like the audience in the theater. Women in particular were screaming and screeching. Of course there are silly moments where you say, “I cannot believe you are SO stupid”, but it is the nature of these films. From 1 to 5, 5 being a masterpiece, I give it a 3 as a modest and not terrible movie. However, Ethan Hawke is starring in Sinister, a rated R film that from the looks of the trailer, does promise a much more horrifying experience on October 5th.
