Ernest Borgnine’s final film: ‘Vicente Fernandez’

Ernest Borgnine's final film: 'Vicente Fernandez'

Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights to Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine’s final film, ‘The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernández’.

Indican will release the film theatrically in Los Angeles this October, with additional select cities to follow, and will launch an awards campaign centered on Borgnine’s final performance.

Film premiered in April at this year’s Newport Beach Int’l Film Festival, where Borgnine won the fest’s Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award.

The pic is written and directed by Elia Petridis, and produced by Darren Brandl and Dave O’Brien.  Additional cast members include Barry Corbin, Carla Ortiz, Dale Dickey and Tony Plana.

‘Vicente Fernández’ stars Ernest Borgnine as a stubborn man who becomes the local hero of his nursing home upon leading the Latino staff in a revolt against the home’s tyrannical owner.

“Indican Pictures is extremely honored to be releasing Oscar winning actor Ernest Borgnine’s final film performance, which is among his best,” said Randolph Kret, VP of Indican Pictures.

Hollywood icon Borgnine, who passed away in July of this year, racked up more than 200 film and television credits in an esteemed acting career spanning six decades.  He won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a lovelorn butcher in 1955’s “Marty”, was nominated for three Emmys, and won a life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild in 2010.

The deal was negotiated by Shaun Hill of Indican Pictures and Maren Olson of Traction Media on behalf of the Producers.

First review of Pixar’s short "Partysaurus Rex’

First review of Pixar's short "Partysaurus Rex'

We had the opportunity to be the first to see Pixar’s short- 3D film ‘Partysaurus Rex’ which will premiere in theaters along with ‘Finding Nemo 3D’ on September 14th. What’s even better is that we got to see it at Pixar Studios in San Francisco, California where gigantic Lego statues of ‘Toy Story’ characters stood along with other statues from ‘Monsters Inc.’ and other cool things like the drape from ‘Brave’ among others and of course their trademark desk lamp and circus ball. We were taken to their own in house movie theater, where we had a short presentation by the director of the film Mark Walsh and producer Kim Adams. The constellations shone brightly in the movie theater’s ceiling before the red velvet curtain opened to reveal the screen.

‘Partysaurus Rex’ brings to life one of the most memorable characters from ‘Toy Story’, Rex (Wallace Shawn). We get to spend some time with another one of Pixar’s most famous movies and its characters: Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato head, etc, but most of all Rex; who shows us another side of him where we get to meet a bunch of new, fun and wild bath time toys. Rex has always been portrayed as a nervous dinosaur, which is very cautious, but here Bonnie, his owner, takes him to her bath time where he gets to re-invent himself.

Pixar has done quite a lot of short-films; the latest one premiered with ‘Brave’ and was called ‘La Luna’ which was also made in 3D. I must highlight these are two very different short-films. ‘La Luna’ has a melancholic and soft tone to it, its characters mainly mumble and point. Pixar has a knack for being in tune with everything, and as ‘La Luna’ worked with ‘Brave’ and its theme so does ‘Partysaurus Rex’ with Nemo. This latest short-film is a rave party, that’s quite the opposite of ‘La Luna’ as it is loud, extravagant and extremely colorful.

This isn’t the first Pixar short-film on ‘Toy Story’ either, Pixar has a series of shorts called Toy Story Toons and this is actually the third episode in the series; the other shorts are: ‘Small Fry’ which was released in 2011 with ‘The Muppets’ when it was in theaters and made Buzz its main character. Another short was ‘Hawaiian Vacation’ which featured Ken and Barbie and was released in 2011 when ‘Cars 2’ hit theaters.

‘Partysaurus Rex’ left me wishing it were a full-length movie, because it was so much fun! It has upbeat music and wonderful animation accompanied by florescent colors. All of these elements are brought to an even higher level because of the 3D effects, which really takes full use of them. This short is a great way to get the audience in a water environment, ready and excited to watch ‘Finding Nemo 3D’.

‘The Expandables 2’ on top

08.20.2012 | By |

'The Expandables 2' on top

The Expendables 2’ takes over the number one spot with $28.8 million dollars, it’s no surprise because everyone wants to see the action heroes reunion in this silly action packed film. This sequel reunites even more heroes from the past; despite of this it didn’t earn enough compared to its predecessor.

Last week’s number one ‘The Bourne Legacy’ falls to number two with $17 million dollars. Jeremy Renner’s film did its best to put up a fight against the muscle machine that took the first spot.

The spooky family film ‘ParaNorman’ premiered at number three with $14 million dollars. The zombie 3D movie, also didn’t collect as much as expected. The box office has brought in weak number since the Colorado shooting. On another note ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ fell to the sixth spot from the third spot last week.

The Top 10 Movies in the Box Office are:

1. The Expendables 2 – $28.8 mil

2. The Bourne Legacy – $17 mil

3. ParaNorman – $14 mil

4. The Campaign – $13.4 mil

5. Sparkle – $12 mil

6. The Dark Knight Rises – $11.1 mil

7. The Odd Life of Timothy Green – $10.9 mil

8. Hope Springs – $9.1 mil

9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days – $3.9 mil

10. Total Recall – $3.5 mil

Cosmopolis

08.14.2012 | By |

Cosmopolis

Cerebrally unentertaining. That is how I would describe ‘Cosmopolis’, the new cinematic effort by David Cronenberg (The Fly, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises) starring Robert Pattinson. Much of it has to do with its inexhaustible stream of abstract sequences that amount to meaningless nothings. I found the film to be always saying too much, but never saying anything at all. It is banal and sufferingly boring. Cronenberg’s attempt to capture the zeitgeist of our times was commendable on a cerebral point of view, but he could have made more of a creative push to entertain us cinematically as well. Dry abstractions are abusive and should not have a place amongst a paying crowd. Give it away for free, as altruistic charity or something, but don’t make us pay for it. Some stories are assimilated better in books than movies, ‘Cosmopolis’ is one such case.

Based on the novel by Don DeLillo, this highly bombastic story is about a 28-year old financial whiz kid and billionaire asset manager named Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) who needs to go crosstown to get a haircut amidst the social chaos that is unfolding before his very eyes. He suffers from ennui and is looking for the meaning of his life. Having started the day with everything, believing he is the future, Packer’s perfectly ordered, doubt-free world is about to implode.

I think I’m a pretty intelligent guy and I like high concept film fare, but this movie was pontificating highfalutin trivialities. I’ve always felt that the original purpose of commercial film was to entertain. If you are a paying customer, you must be entertained. We can get into the subjectivity of how one perceives entertainment, but most directors are payed to provide audiences with swift and concise films that possess lively editing, fine acting and an engrossing story. Many of those elements don’t happen here and it leads to boredom and agitation, specially when you’re sitting down for close to two hours. Just ask the guy who was next to me who was so antsy that his restless body language made me more fidgety than what I already was.

Cronenberg isn’t the only director who tends to create slow paced, dialogue intense films. Just take a look at the worst offender in Jim Jarmusch’s ‘The Limits of Control’ or a close second in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Somewhere’. These are some examples of stoic torture. It’s the type of projects that seem aimless and provokes an internal feeling to just piercingly screech amongst the eternal and endless silence in the theater.

One can read the aforementioned argument and debate me that movies like this aren’t for everybody, but then why make them if only a fraction of people are going to enjoy it? How can one honestly invest for a modicum as opposed to the whole? Not good business and I believe that the box office will reflect that.

A good example of conveying existential and metaphysical topics while infusing humor and human elements that we can all identify with is Richard Linklater’s ‘Waking Life,’ one of my favorite films of all time. It’s about a man who shuffles through a lucid dream meeting various people and discussing the meanings and purposes of the universe. I can tell you it is better than ‘Cosmopolis’. Another piece of film that tackles the narrative of the human existence with diverting situational pep is ‘Biutiful’ by Alejandro González Iñárritu. You know you’re about to get clubbed with a philosophical message, but at least you’ll feel winded by the end from the journey you took.

On a bright note, Robert Pattinson continues his growth as an actor. ‘Water for Elephants’ set him apart from the teenage ‘Twilight’ series and gave him shadows of credibility. This movie keeps reinforcing the objective, albeit as another brooding character. If you look at almost all his movies, he plays Mr. Brood. It’s as if his range doesn’t allow for a different emotional state. But within that broodiness, he can be seen expanding his skill. Let’s wait for a body of work where he does a comedy (although many would categorize the Twilight Saga as comedy) or an adventure film so we can judge him appropriately.

If you’re a young Pattinson fan looking for a romantic drama where Pattinson swoons you over, boy are you in for a surprise. This is a young girl’s living nightmare as you’ll be offered enough apathetic dialogue to snore you into puberty.

‘Avatar 3D’ Bluray will be released Oct 15th!

08.14.2012 | By |

'Avatar 3D' Bluray will be released Oct 15th!

Finally! 3 years since its release on December 18th, 2009, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced this morning that James Cameron’s Avatar will arrive as a “Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray 3D on October 15 globally and in North America on October 16. Three years to wait for a 3D bluray?? Nuts.

“3D television is the future of home entertainment,” said Cameron, “I’m a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that ‘Avatar’ can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen.”

“As the number of homes with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room,” continued producer Jon Landau, “This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible.”

Previously only available to consumers through an exclusive deal with Panasonic, the two-disc Avatar 3D Blu-ray Collector’s Edition will feature the original theatrical release and be available in all-new collectible packaging. Seen by more than 310 million people worldwide, the Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest-grossing film of all time, taking in more than $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Dominican actress Zoe Saldaña who played Neytiri in the movie, is on the cover of the 3D Blu-ray movie.
