First poster of Robert De Niro in 'Red Lights'

Here is another sign that Hispanics are climbing the Hollywood echelons …. Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés has a new thriller entitled RED LIGHTS where the legendary actor Robert De Niro one of the protagonists. Here is the first movie poster showing De Niro.

A psychological thriller which explores the human brain’s perception mechanisms and the diffuse frontiers between belief and science, RED LIGHTS starts out from the experiences of two rationalist scientists (Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver) who dissect phenomena from the metapsychic world, and the clash of forces with a world famous psychic they bring about. They must deal with the possibility of the supernatural when they meet with renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro). The past and the present of each the protagonists contain still unrevealed shadows, setting in train a dark story of growing tension, full of unexpected twists and turns.

The film was at Sundance Film Festival and had good reviews, but they say that the ending really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Cortes is expected to set the end when the film opens this summer.

“Red Lights” also stars Elizabeth Olsen and Toby Jones and opens July 13.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’: New Australian trailer!

05.29.2012 | By |

'The Amazing Spider-Man': New Australian trailer!

A movie trailer can often make or destroy a film, especially a blockbuster film. It all depends on which part of the story the studio decides to focus on. In the case of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, Columbia Pictures focused on telling the origins of Spider-Man and his search for his abandonment by his parents to American audiences. But that’s not the case in Australia where their new trailer for the arachnid hero is much more entertaining, more balanced with action and humor and less oriented to Spidey’s origins.

To be frank, this is the best preview of the film we’ve seen, and if American audiences had seen this first, we would be discussing how tough the competition would be against “The Avengers“. The American versions of the Spidey trailers are dark in tone, dramatic, and do not have the trademark humor with which we grew up reading in the Marvel comics and Saturday morning cartoons.

The Australian international trailer gives us some new scenes we can sink our teeth into such as The Lizard dialogue, and interactions with Parker and Gwen Stacy.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” opens on July 3 in the United States.

First set pics of Adam Sandler in 'Grown Ups 2'!

It’s funny how sometimes you stumble upon some good movie news exclusives from people that have nothing to do with the Hollywood scene.

Michael Kay, from ESPN Radio 98.7FM NY (formerly known as ESPN 1050AM) and the Yankees’ TV play by play man is an extra on Adam Sandler‘s new comedy sequel Grown Ups 2, starring Salma Hayek, Taylor Lautner, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph, David Spade, Nick Swardson, Cheri Oteri. He was tweeting pics from the set and we now have them here for your first look, sneak peek.

The pics have Sandler what looks to be at a high school football field getting ready to throw the football. Kay looks like the high school coach ready to take Sandler thru the mill.

Grown Ups 2‘ is a follow up to the 2010 comedy about a group of childhood friends who reunite years later. The first part was one of the worst films of that year and we still can’t believe a sequel was greenlit. Sandler has some hardcore fans.

‘Grown Ups 2’ is set to be released July 12, 2013.

Details of ‘Men in Black 3’ Premiere and After Party!

05.24.2012 | By |

Details of 'Men in Black 3' Premiere and After Party!

Wednesday night, ShowBizCafe.com had the pleasure of attending the ‘Men in Black 3’ New York Premiere, and what could very well be described as the best after party of 2012 and perhaps the best party – period – in the Hollywood industry in years.

The red carpet was held at the Ziegfeld theater in Manhattan, considered by this editor to be the best theater in New York. The entire cast showed up, including helmer Barry Sonnenfeld and Latino rapper Pitbull, who raps the theme song of the film. Will Smith, with his large cast of fellow actors, thanked the “Big Apple” for their support and introduced the 3D presentation.

After the screening, we were transported on a shuttle bus to the post premiere party aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, which served all types od delicious food and drinks. Moreover, there were fireworks provided by the Grucci group that lasted about 25 minutes, which then gave way to, not one, but two musical performances with rappers Pitbull, and Will Smith and his family, including a reunion with DJ Jazzy Jeff. Pitbull played all his hits like International Love and the MIB3 theme song, and Smith went old school with songs like Summertime and the original and catchy MIB track.

Celebrities like boy band sensation One Direction, Spike Lee, Ethan Cohen and Michael Shannon were on hand to catch the performances of what was an unforgettable night.

I don’t know how much Sony spent putting this night together, but whatever it was, this one is going into the – “Remember that MIB3 party 20 years ago? Nothing like it!” -memory banks.

To get a sense of what we experienced, check out below some of the photographs and videos we took at the premiere and after party. Just insane!

Sony Classics acquires Chilean movie ‘NO’

05.22.2012 | By |

Sony Classics acquires Chilean movie 'NO'

Today in Cannes Sony Pictures Classics has announced that it has acquired all the rights for the movie ‘NO’, from the sensational Chilean director Pablo Larraín. With Pedro Peirano as scriptwriter, produced by Juan de Diós Larraín and Daniel Dreifuss and executive directors Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King.

This has been one of the best films received by critics in the festival. One of the best Mexican actors known in the world of Hollywood, Gael García Bernal joins a Chilean cast: Alfredo Castro, Antónia Zegers, Marcial Tagle, Néstor Cantillana, Jaime Vadell and Pascal Montero.

The movie is based on the true story when the Chilean military dictator, Augusto Pinochet was dealing with international pressure, he asked for a referendum to his presidency in 1988. Leaders from the opposite side convince a young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal) to lead their campaign. With deficient resources and constant surveillance from the tyrant’s men, Saavedra and his team create a courageous plan to win the elections and free their country from oppression.

Sony Pictures Classics said that the movie is based on an energetic drama that is masterfully appealing about politics and power, which makes the brain think while it is entertained. Surely ‘NO’ will make Pablo Larraín a known international director and we will see Gael García Bernal in one of his best performances yet.

Participant Media, the company that promoted the film until now and has partnered with Sony Pictures Classics, says Larrín and García are an incomparable team and have created an inspiring film.  Lastly the CEO of the company Jim Berk said he was sure that Sony Pictures Classics was the best company to introduce audiences from the United States to the film.

Bobby Cannavale will work with Woody Allen

05.22.2012 | By |

Bobby Cannavale will work with Woody Allen

Woody Allen’s next comedy adds Bobby Cannavale to the cast already in place, which are Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper and Alec Baldwin. Cannavale is pretty busy, since he’s working now in the HBO series ‘Boardwalk Empire’, he’s also been announced to star in ‘The Big Knife’ a revival play on Broadway in April 2013.

To top it off he was part of ‘Lovelace’ directed by Jeffrey Friedman and Rob Epstein, which Nu Image picked up at Canness Film Festival.

Men In Black 3

05.21.2012 | By |

Men In Black 3

Men in Black III’ comes a decade later after ‘Men in Black II’, despite of the amount of time that separate them and it being part of the franchise, it stands well on its on. Clearly director Barry Sonnenfeld still knows what works for Men in Black and its audience. The special effects are phenomenal; the detail given to every alien character is outstanding, so much so that the realness of it can easily gross one out. The screening I went to was in 3D and I can say that the 3D is pretty good; the shots taken off the ledge of New York City’s Chrysler building made me a bit dizzy. The film does a good job at encompassing its predecessors without making a person unfamiliar with them feel lost. This is definitely a family film to watch during Memorial Day Weekend.

In this chapter of the Men in Black, Agent J (Will Smith) is forced to travel to the early years of the agency in 1969, to prevent an alien known as Boris the Animal (Jermaine Clement) from killing his partner K (Tommy Lee Jones) and at the same time saving the world from a future invasion and destruction. Agent J has 24 hours to prevent history from changing; he gets to meet and deal with the younger version of Agent K (Josh Brolin), and also discovers other secrets about the agency.

There are many cameos in the film, but some of the most talked about such as Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber are barely noticeable. Although Smith still has the same smart mouth as in the past two films, here he’s lost his childish comedy, which means a lot of funny moments the others delivered have been lost. The emotional ties are stronger than the comedy, which perhaps won’t work much for its target audience as the film begins to feel a bit long, the beginning of the film is too fast paced and then it seems to go in slow motion for a while.

The best part about time traveling were the incorporations of Coney Island during the 60’s and Bill Hader as Andy Warhol, there’s many clever historic references here. As mentioned above the special effects were worth the $215 million dollars spent in making the film. We can see this on Boris The Animal, the villain’s presence and voice are perfectly horrific. My favorite character was young Agent K; Brolin is a flawless impersonator and he picked up the mannerisms and everything else from the older version of his character as if they were his own.

PG-13 is a perfect rating for this film, as it might get too convoluted and fast paced for a younger audience anyway. As a sequel this film adds on to the story and doesn’t damage it in any way, which very few sequels manage to do. Since there’s consideration of perhaps a ‘Men in Black 4’, which is not a surprise seeing that there’s still plenty of material to work from, other actors should be considered since both of the main charters seemed a bit tired in their roles. This will be a fun film for parents who enjoyed the past films and teens that might be enjoying their first ‘Men in Black’ adventure.
