What To See This Weekend On Demand: ‘Don Jon,’ ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’

If you’re a movie buff, which I know some of you are, you should really watch this 30m show on NY1 called – Talking Pictures On Demand. I was a guest for the sixth time and it really breaks down with a fine tooth comb the new releases and movies that are currently “on demand”. I reviewed Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s comedy charmer Don Jon, the delightful romantic comedy Florence Foster Jenkins and more. Click video above to have a look!

Chilean director Pablo Larraín is somewhat of a filmmaking savant. Of the few films he’s made, they are all already acclaimed. But with ‘Neruda,’ he brings us the best work he’s done so far as a director. Brilliantly acted by Luis Gnocco as the Nobel-prize winning diplomat-poet Pablo Neruda, Larraín gives us a mythical figure of Latin America’s literature sheathed with a European sensibility. With touches of magical realism and black comedy, ‘Neruda’ is a wondrous, rich tale of one of the most enigmatic artists of the 20th century.

Jack Rico’s Top 10 Movies Of 2016

It’s hard to look back at 2016 and not think how tragic it was to lose our beloved artistic icons. But when it comes to motion pictures, there were a couple of silver linings one can sanguinely lean on as bright spots. Though this was by far the year of superheroes and animated films, it was also the year where we witnessed the Golden Age of African-American storytelling. With remarkable films such as Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Birth of a Nation, Kicks, Loving, 13th and I Am Not Your Negro in theaters, the outlook for black cinema finally looks hopeful. Women and multiculturalism were also front and center on screen and behind the scenes and no film was more demonstrative of those attributes than Rogue One. Movies, in general, impact people differently and I believe the Top 10 Movies I have selected above not only reflect those qualities but provide the standard of excellence in cinema this year.
