Justina Machado On Why People Love Animation So Much

01.28.2022 | By |

This week on episode 170 of the Highly Relevant podcast, I welcome the beloved actress Justina Machado known to many as Penelope Alvarez in the Emmy-nominated hit comedy reboot of “One Day at a Time”. In the following Q&A, we discuss her new voice-acted film, “The Ice Age: Adventures of Buckwild,” and what her role as the zorilla ‘Zee’ means for Latino representation. Our conversation also covered several interesting subjects such as the world’s love for animated films, why Hispanic animated films succeed and real-life Latino films and television shows don’t, and why she stopped using the term Hispanic to describe herself. Catch the video interview on our YouTube channel below. Read More

Director Carlos Lopéz Estrada On ‘Raya And The Last Dragon,’ Working With Disney, And His Thoughts On DC’s Latino ‘Blue Beetle’

03.4.2021 | By |

Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon‘ will be the first major motion-picture to be released after New York City theaters finally re-open at only 25% capacity this weekend. Though it won’t be an accurate assessment of the potential of all NYC and LA theaters fully re-opening, it will give Hollywood executives a sense for the public’s appetite to see new releases on the big screen, rather than streaming.  If ‘Raya’ overdelivers, then we can assume we’re going to have a great summer. But if it underperforms… then we can surmise that people still aren’t comfortable being closed in a room with strangers for two straight hours. At the center of all this attention is Carlos Lopéz Estrada, co-director of the film, who sat with us to discuss a wide array of topics including what he learned as a director and storyteller at Disney, his thoughts on being Latino and directing an Asian film, and why he believes we’re entering a new era of Latino superheroes. Interview: Rob Reiner On Trump Movie, Sequels, Superheroes And TV

05.9.2016 | By |

When one says the name Rob Reiner, plentiful thoughts of superlatives comes to mind, but what most people associate the name Rob Reiner with is his character Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic from “All in the Family” and for his romantic-comedy classic “When Harry Met Sally,” at least for this writer. A further look into Reiner’s cinematic oeuvre and you’ll slowly understand how the tag of living legend might apply. Read More

Sacha Baron Cohen Talks Shock Comedy, “Donald Trump’s AIDS”

03.13.2016 | By |

Sacha Baron Cohen was in NYC this past week to talk about his new action comedy – The Brothers Grimsby – a James Bond like buddy film where moments can get VERY uncomfortable amongst brothers. Spanish actress and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz co-stars in it, but much like Zoolander 2, she has been opting for comedy as of late (which sounds more like she can’t get any quality work and money is running dry).   Read More

Vin Diesel Flips Out When Compared to ‘Last Witch Hunter’ Character

10.23.2015 | By |

Vin Diesel is an enthusiastic one. That’s for sure. During a recent interview for his film The Last Witch Hunter, the Fast & the Furious star decided to flip the switch and ask me what I thought about the action/adventure flick. I compared him to his character Kaulder, a man who is immortal and indestructible but faces loneliness and isolation. There’s a facade the character puts up, all the while consumed by weakness. In many ways, Diesel shares similar traits.  Read More

Doctor Who has been a staple of British culture for well over fifty years. First premiering in 1963, the show had something of cult following here in the United States during its original run. Since returning to the air in 2005, it’s become an international hit. Currently in its Ninth Season (Or Thirty-Fifth, depending on your measure) the series follows the adventures of the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman). Read More
