This pre-Valentine’s day weekend put the romantic drama, ‘The Vow’ in the first place with $ 41.7 million. It seems like this predictable romance with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum will stick it through post the romantic holiday.
The upbeat action thriller ‘Safe House’ earned $39.3 million dollars at the second spot. This one might fight for first place soon, since many are excited to have Denzel Washington doing what he does best.
Dwayne Johnson’s family movie, ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ took third place with $27.6 million dollars. It is followed by ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D’.

Surprisingly ‘Chronicle’ and ‘The Woman in Black’ went head to head for the number one spot and weren’t that far off from one another. But the sci-fi thriller about 3 young men that unexpectedly get superpowers, ‘Chronicle’ placed itself there with $22 million dollars.
‘The Woman in Black’ a movie of a whole other genre, horror, came second with $21 million. Daniel Radcliffe has a strong following which might help keep it on the top three long enough to make up for the $14million spent in advertising alone.
‘The Grey’, Liam Nesson’s action film dropped to the third spot with $9.5 million dollars. The family film ‘Big Miracle’ and the horror action film ‘Underworld Awakening’ follow it.

If you were to ask any theater fan what is the show they are most looking forward to seeing this year, a large majority will probably tell you ‘Evita’. Why? One name. Ricky Martin. Word of mouth has been so widespread on his co-starring role that any advertising would be almost unnecessary. Nevertheless, and to be on the safe side, producers have launched their PR minions to let those who have been sleeping under a rock that – “Ricky is coming, Ricky is coming!”
The marketing blitz began on radio approximately 2 weeks ago and has expanded now onto TV. Thanks to Youtube, we got our hands on the :15 second commercial that shows Martin, nicely shaved and tan, with the other two talented leads in Argentine actress Elena Rogers and Broadway veteran Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd). Even though the ad is brief, it’s haunting. The musical is gaining momentum and by the time it opens on April 5th, it’ll become an event.

‘The Grey’ starring Liam Neeson turned up at number one this weekend with $20 million dollars. This movie deserves its position for the reasons we give in our film review.
Another movie that’s great follows it, ‘Underworld Awakening’ that even though it went down to second place it continues to collect money such as the $12.5 million from this time around.
The box office surprises us with the other spots, in third place is ‘One for the Money’ which collected $11.7 million. Another big surprise, thanks to the Oscars is ‘The Descendants’ in seventh place, obviously those who hadn’t seen it became curious with all the buzz.

It was confirmed Monday, that Puerto Rican actress/singer Jennifer Lopez will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. What category she will present is TBD.
The Oscars 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.
The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Latino actors Demián Bichir and Sofia Vergara were not winners at ‘The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards’, but it was great to see them amongst the best Hollywood can offer. The Actor for a motion picture cast performance went this year to “The Help”. SAG presented its coveted Actor statuette for the outstanding motion picture and primetime television performances of 2011.
Honored with individual awards were Viola Davis, Jean Dujardin, Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer for performances in motion pictures and Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Lange, Betty White, and Kate Winslet for performances in television. Screen Actors Guild originated awards for the outstanding performances by a motion picture cast and by television drama and comedy ensembles. The Actor® for a motion picture cast performance went this year to “The Help”, while the Actors® for television drama and comedy ensemble performances went this year to “Boardwalk Empire” and “Modern Family.” Screen Actors Guild’s honors for outstanding performances by a stunt ensemble in film and television were awarded to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “Game of Thrones.” Nearly 100,000 active members of Screen Actors Guild nationwide were eligible to vote for the recipients.
Dick Van Dyke presented Mary Tyler Moore with Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor, the 48th Annual Life Achievement Award, following a filmed tribute. Jessica Chastain introduced a film salute to SAG’s regional branches, spotlighting memorable moments created by actors who live and work across the nation. Meryl Streep introduced a filmed “In Memoriam” tribute to the actors we have lost in the past year.

If Terminator 5 shooting was the wise decision is to be rated R and actually will be. The fifth installment of the Terminator, will have an R rating in the words of Megan Ellison, owner and president of Annapurna Pictures studio, which owns the rights to the series.
The first three “Terminator” were all rated R, but then the director McG for “Terminator Salvation”, decided it would be better to lower the rating to PG-13 with the hope that the franchise could be seen by a wider audience with the hope that it would result in higher gross income.
The ace up the sleeve of this fifth installment will undoubtedly be the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the franchise. Is he the Terminator? What character would play? All in good time boys.

There were some early rumors last year that Oscar winner Javier Bardem was going to have a role in Universal Studio’s sequel to Despicable Me. But looks as if he is no longer interested in the role.
He was reported to be in negotiations about voicing a villain called El Macho who is a larger than life luchador and the baddest Mexican to walk the Earth, but looks like commitments to ‘Skyfall‘, the new James Bond film releasing 2013, as well as Terrence Malick’s currently untitled project with Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams.
So who is replacing Bardem in the movie? The word is that Universal Studios is doing a wide search for Latino and non-Latino actors. I’m sure they’ll audition the usual suspects. Kudos to Universal though for actually creating a Latino animated character which are rarely seen these days, even though WB’s ‘Happy Feet 2′ went towards that direction as well. It’s in Universal’s best interest since the original ‘Despicable Me‘, which was in 3D, had 25% of the box office coming in from Latino audiences.
