Why you shouldn’t buy ‘Avatar’ on Blu-Ray…yet!

04.20.2010 | By |

Why you shouldn't buy 'Avatar' on Blu-Ray...yet!

Get ready to get royally screwed – 3 times – by James Cameron. On April 22nd, Earth Day, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron will release Avatar on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Everyone who didn’t see in theaters is anxious to see what all the fuss was about. How great was the 3D experience? Did it revolutionize the way we see films? All those questions will NOT be answered nor seen in the upcoming DVD release.

Why? Because the smart marketing people at Fox will be releasing 3 versions of the film between now and next year.

Here’s the breakdown of what you should expect for all 3 editions:

– On April 22, Best Buy and the rest of the DVD chains will be renting and selling the bare and bones edition, which essentially contains only the 2D movie. No special features, no menus, no trailers, no bonus features at all. According to Cameron, they wanted to use every available bit of information on the disc to preserve the visual and audio quality of the film.

– The second version will be released in November. They’re calling it ‘The Ultimate Edition,’ which will drop after the theatrical re-release of Avatar in 3D with an extra 20 to 40 minutes of deleted footage and extra features.

– And lastly, a third version will drop in 3D for 2011 as a 3 disc set, along with all the bells and whistles your blue Avatar self can imagine. The idea is that by then, more consumers are expected to have 3-D televisions in their homes.

So with all this information we just researched for you, why would you buy the upcoming Avatar blu-ray movie, if you can see the re-release of Avatar, with additional content and in the best possible 3D at theaters, then have the option to also buy the special edition in November?

What we want you to avoid is to have to pay over $100 for the same dvd movie. It makes Cameron richer and you poorer. Doesn’t he already have enough money? Isn’t the movie already the highest grossing in history, destroying Titanic’s record from what was thought to be utterly impossible! Don’t buy into the marketing ploy that some marketer from Fox came up with to exploit you. Just wait a few months and get a much superior release for your hard earned money.

And for those of you that don’t care buying it, but streaming it via Netflix on your big 50 inch LED screen, with your high speed FIOS internet, get ready to wait 28 days to see Avatar, May 20th to be exact, after its April 22nd release. This was part of a deal just signed between Netflix and Fox and Universal Pictures. So why would Netflix succumb to this deal? More inventory at a discounted price and an expanded number of titles it can stream directly to customers. In exchange to have Blockbuster sell first, Netflix, for the first time, will stream shows like 24 under the new pact. The company seems to be calculating that video-on-demand will become a bigger part of its business in the future, making any loss of revenue due to rental delays negligible.

So there you go folks. Be a wise and savvy consumer and don’t let yourself be taken for a ride.

Godard’s ‘Breathless’ to be re-released in theaters!

04.19.2010 | By |

Godard's 'Breathless' to be re-released in theaters!

Jean-Luc Godard is still living and he is now 79! God bless him. A living icon. I was planning on seeing it on DVD this weekend, but hell, if I can catch a restored version in theaters then screw the DVD!

For the 50th anniversary release, Rialto has made new 35mm prints from a restored negative supervised by the film’s director of photography, Raoul Coutard – the first restoration of BREATHLESS ever.  Rialto has also added completely revised English subtitles by Lenny Borger, capturing Godard’s playful language like never before.  Borger has just finished working with Godard on the subtitles for the director’s latest film, “Film Socialisme,” which will be shown in the “Un Certain Regard” section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Rialto Pictures will open the 50th anniversary restoration of BREATHLESS on Friday, May 28 at Film Forum in New York [and at Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles], followed by additional cities.

Based on a treatment by François Truffaut and photographed by New Wave legend Raoul Coutard, with no less a crime specialist than Claude Chabrol as technical advisor, Godard’s jazzy riff on American Film Noir features iconic performances from Belmondo, as the on-the-run Bogart-inspired small-time hood, and Seberg as his American, Herald Tribune-hawking girlfriend, who ultimately betrays him.  With a pace that’s non-stop, thanks to its startling new editing techniques, BREATHLESS reinvented the grammar of movies and almost instantly changed the course of international filmmaking.

Flip flop at the box office: ‘Kick-Ass’ #1 now

04.19.2010 | By |

Flip flop at the box office: 'Kick-Ass' #1 now

The action/comedy Kick-Ass emerged from a neck-and-neck box office race to claim the #1 spot from the 3D animated family feature HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. Director Matthew Vaughn’s critically lauded, R-rated film took in $19,828,687 for the weekend.

Based on the groundbreaking, best-selling comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., KICK-ASS stars Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong and Chloë Grace Moretz, and features Nicolas Cage.  The screenplay is written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman.  The producers are Matthew Vaughn, Brad Pitt, Tarquin Pack and Kris Thykier; Millar and Romita Jr. are co-producers.  Lionsgate acquired North American distribution rights for $15 million last year.

Said Joe Drake, Lionsgate Co-Chief Operating Officer and Motion Picture Group President, “KICK-ASS is fantastic, highly original entertainment, and our marketing and distribution teams have brilliantly positioned it for a long and successful run.  That kind of run is precisely what we are seeing on the international front, where KICK-ASS has demonstrated a very strong hold at the box office; in Great Britain alone, it’s taken in nearly $13.8 million in 17 days.”

Lionsgate’s upcoming releases include: Robert Luketic’s romantic comedy KILLERS, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, opening June 4; Sylvester Stallone’s action/thriller THE EXPENDABLES, with an all-star cast including Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts and Mickey Rourke, opening August 13; and Daniel Stamm’s horror movie THE LAST EXORCISM, produced by Eli Roth (HOSTEL), starring Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, opening August 27.

Sony Pictures releases 11 ‘Cantinflas’ movies on DVD

04.14.2010 | By |

Sony Pictures releases 11 'Cantinflas' movies on DVD

I was just sent this press release for the new Cantiflas box set coming out on May 11th. Sony is distributing it and we’re talking about it. After my exclusive scoop on Oscar Jaenada playing Cantinflas on the biopic movie, the buzz on Cantinflas has officially started!

Here’s more on the DVD releases which is probably worth your money.

Mario Moreno, aka “Cantinflas” created a simple, universal character whose roundabout phrases and meaningless speeches confounded those around him, but delighted Spanish-speaking audiences for decades. On May 11, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will debut seven comedy classics starring the beloved Mexican comedian that have never before been released on DVD: A Volar Joven, El Circo, El Gendarme Desconocido, El Mago, El Senor Fotografo, Los Tres Mosqueteros, and Si Yo Fuera Diputado. In addition, four titles are being re-released: El Bolero de Raquel, El Analfabeto, El Padrecito, and Su Excelencia. Each title in the Cantinflas collection will be available separately for $14.94.

Mario “Cantinflas” Moreno, whom the legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin dubbed “the funniest man in the world,” began his career in the 1930s in the “carpas” (tent shows) in Mexico City. After early attempts to find his comedic voice, he embraced his own heritage as a lowly slum dweller and audiences enthusiastically endorsed this comic persona. With his tiny mustache tipping the corner of his mouth, a cockeyed cap over dark, disheveled hair, dirty vest and a rope for a belt, Cantinflas became the idol of the masses by satirizing the police and politicians.

As a pioneer in the Mexican film industry, he helped usher in its golden era. His foray into American cinema landed him a Golden Globe® as Best Actor for his role in Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), but his comedic presence shined brightest in his Spanish language films. People everywhere identified with the struggles of this winsome ragamuffin, and when he died in 1993, thousands endured a violent downpour in order to touch his casket as it lay in state. His funeral was a national event, lasting three days and attended by the presidents of Mexico, Peru, and El Salvador, and the United States Senate held a moment of silence for him.

El Gendarme Desconocido
(1941, aka The Undercover Policeman)
Cantinflas captures three bandits who had robbed a bank the night before. Considered a hero, Cantinflas is given the title of Agent 777 because of his ability to disguise himself in many different forms. In his ultimate assignment, he transforms himself into a wealthy jewel collector to set up a group of gangsters.  The film has a runtime of 108 minutes and is not rated.

 El Gendarme Desconocido

Los Tres Mosqueteros (1942, The Three Musketeers)
Cantinflas sneaks into a cabaret where an actress is in the audience. He persuades her to dance with him, but, at the same time, thieves steal her valuable necklace. The actress is grateful when Cantinflas retrieves the necklace. When she invites him to the studio where she is filming The Three Musketeers, he is mistaken for an extra.  The film has a runtime of 136 minutes and is not rated.

Los Tres Mosqueteros

El Circo (1943, aka The Circus)
Cantinflas is a lowly jack-of-all-trades in a circus. He is infatuated with its glamorous female star, and his hapless bumbling disrupts the performances and the circus falls on hard times. The only thing that can save the circus is a daring trapeze act. Cantinflas volunteers to do the act and is hilarious on the trapeze, creating such a sensation that a wealthy man decides to buy the circus.  The film has a runtime of 90 minutes and is not rated.

El Circo

A Volar Joven (1947)
Cantinflas is a member of the Military Aviation Academy on a 24 hour leave. He goes back to the ranch where he left his sweetheart and his former employers. While there, his employers try to marry him off to their daughter whom he finds unattractive. To avoid having to marry the girl, Cantinflas tries every trick in the book to get himself in trouble.  The film has a runtime of 113 minutes and is not rated.

A Volar Joven

El Mago (1949, aka The Magician)
Cantinflas goes from the streets of Mexico to the fabulous palaces of the Far East. Overnight, he becomes a Caliph, then a magician, then several other fascinating characters, each one providing another facet of Cantinflas’ unique human comedy. The film has a runtime of 100 minutes and is not rated.

El Mago

Si Yo Fuera Diputado (1952)
Cantinflas stars as the owner of a barber shop, who is studying law with the help of Tio Juan (Andres Soler), once a very successful attorney who is now too ill to practice. Before long, Cantinflas begins his law practice and goes on to win many cases. Eventually he runs for office against the local political machine.  The film has a runtime of 95 minutes and is not rated.

So yo fuera diputado

El Senor Fotografo (1953, aka Mr. Photographer)
Cantinflas, a photographer, is captured by gangsters while trying to steal flowers for his girlfriend. The gangsters mistake him for the assistant to a scientist who has discovered a formula for a new atomic bomb. Cantinflas convinces the gangsters that a rubber ball he is holding is the real atomic bomb.  The film has a runtime of 100 minutes and is not rated.

El Señor Fotógrafo

El Bolero de Raquel (1957)
After arriving late and tipsy to his friend’s funeral, Cantinflas is left in charge of his friend’s son by the widow. Cantinflas and the boy, Chavita, meet Chavita’s teacher, who convinces Cantinflas that he should also go to school. When Cantinflas meets the teacher again they confess their love. The film has a runtime of 101 minutes and is not rated.

El Bolero de Raquel

El Analfabeto (1961, aka The Illiterate One)
Cantinflas plays a young illiterate who receives a letter informing him that his rich uncle has passed away leaving him a great fortune. However, he’ll need to learn to read and write before understanding the letter. The film has a runtime of 128 minutes and is not rated.

El Analfabeto

El Padrecito (1964, aka The Little Priest)
Cantinflas stars as the new priest in a town set in its ways. Thinking he is going to take the place of their beloved priest, none of the townspeople like him. While there, he stirs up controversy with his eccentric way of doing things. The film has a runtime of 130 minutes and is not rated.

El Padrecito

Su Excelencia (1967, aka His Excellency)
Cantinflas works at the embassy for his native Los Cocos, distributing visas to those wishing to visit his homeland. At this time, the world is divided into two sections: those countries that are red and those that are green. Because both sides are evenly matched and Los Cocos has the deciding vote, Cantinflas becomes the Ambassador of Los Cocos and both sides try to persuade him to join them.  The film has a runtime of 133 minutes and is not rated.

‘The Expendables’ Trailer: Stallone, Arnold, Willis!

04.2.2010 | By |

'The Expendables' Trailer: Stallone, Arnold, Willis!

To the left of you is the official trailer to The Expendables. This is the movie that Sylvester Stallone has been working on for almost 2 years. I love the concept… unite the most prolific action stars from the 80’s in one movie. For people over 30, that’s like the dream action movie!! Well we have the final trailer and it has some cameos you’re gonna love. Check it out and get pumped!

Here’s the full synopsis just in case you’re wondering: (spoiler alert)

The Expendables is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things arent quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as removing those hard to get at stains. The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

‘Manolete’ with Penelope Cruz ‘Manolete’ gets release

03.30.2010 | By |

'Manolete' with Penelope Cruz 'Manolete' gets release

In his lifetime, Manolete, the legendary bullfighter, caused a stir living with his exuberant left-wing mistress beneath the disapproving glare of staunchly Catholic, 1940s Spain. Manolete, a film about this romance starring Adrien Brody and Penelope Cruz, is raising eyebrows again – this time among the anti-bullfighting camp.

After a three-year delay, the €20m (£18m) British-Spanish production is expected to be released this week in Paris – to the outrage of animal rights activists.

“It is inadmissible to release a film in which the hero is a matador,” said the Alliance Anticorrida, a French anti-bullfighting group, in a message to its 20,000 members. “If they are properly informed, a great number of spectators will avoid this new film.”

The film, by the Dutch director Menno Meyjes, was supposed to be released as early as 2007, but has been beset with production delays, debts and a ballooning budget. Bullfighting scenes were reportedly shot without using real animals, which inflated the cost.

“Let’s thank Lola Films for making a compassionate choice for bulls,” said the US-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

In the film, a sombre Adrien Brody plays the matador from Cordoba enamoured with Penelope Cruz’s bonne vivante Mexican actress, Lupe Sino, who pines for a final glimpse of her lover after he is gored to death by the bull Islero in 1947.

The film’s producers and distributors have tried to reassure activists that the film – peppered with phrases like “I’m just your mistress; death is your wife” – is a story about love not killing. But the ever-growing anti-bullfighting movement appears unmoved. “It is forgetting a bit too quickly the images of Adrien Brody, his face and hands stained with blood in his torero costume,” the Alliance Anticorrida said.

Movie Review: ‘Chloe’

03.26.2010 | By |

Movie Review: 'Chloe'

Chloe,’ Atom Egoyan’s new directorial work, is the lesbian version of Fatal Attraction. You can expect a high level of nudity and explicit, erotic sexual lesbian scenes that almost make it feel like soft core porn. The look of the film is different though and resembles more Stanley Kubrick’s artistic ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ The pacing, cinematography and camerawork, even its musical score, ignites thoughts of the film. The acting is strong and the story, for 85% of its duration, is utterly enthralling… until it collapses at the very end in an hyperbolic mess.

A gynecologist (Julianne Moore) hires an escort (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce her husband (Liam Neeson), whom she suspects of cheating. The results will back fire on her and reveal a side of herself she didn’t know existed.

For most of the film, this erotic thriller carries a slow enjoyable pace. It never reaches the depths of boredom. Each scene is crafted carefully to develop the characters and the meat of the story. The situations they are all in are plausible, but with an edge to them. Then out of nowhere, 20 minutes before its denouement, it becomes risible and loses all cogency and believability. I don’t even want to try and figure out why that happened, but this movie could have been great.

Despite that one deficiency, the whole of the film should not be dismissed. The engrossing, sometimes transfixing artistic sensuality of the sequences will keep you glued to your seat. The premise evokes real questions that ultimately many marriages suffer from, such as – can one ever really be only with one person for their whole life?

Chloe’ has an answer for that and it’s not necessarily the one you want to hear. The movie is a bit twisted, but it is very entertaining, you can’t wait to see what happens next and am sure most of you will feel the same too.

3 questions with Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning

03.18.2010 | By |

3 questions with Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning

ShowBizCafe.com (SBC) had the opportunity to talk to Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning about their new film ‘The Runaways,” opening March 19, 2010. They let us in on how the music and the Rock icons Joan Jett and Cherie Currie influence them today:

SBC: You know what it feels like to have thousands of people screaming at you, due to your previous films, and now you are playing Rock musicians on stage. Although for a film, can you guys compare and contrast the energy that you get from fans in the two fields?

Dakota: I think it is hard comparing an actor with someone that is in music. I think it is really different, especially me just playing a musician. It is kind of a different energy that you feel than actually someone screaming for you or cheering for you personally. Also with actors, most of the time, those people are fans of whom you played and a character. They see you as that character, as appose to a musician they love YOU and who YOU are and how you project yourself onto other people; as appose to an actor, how you project your character onto other people.

Kristen: Musicians make statements. They are there to be themselves. That is just not who we are. I feel like they are much more public figures than actors almost because they are more like… she (Dakota) said it already.

SBC:How was the experience of working with Floria, and was their any real challenge to get it right for the real life people you were portraying?

Kristen: That was the whole thing. That is why the performances were the most intimidating thing, because they have very distinct styles. They’re performers and we’re… I am not a performer, so that was a new thing for me. When I first started watching Joan do these songs, she was SO full of something that I thought that I could never, that nobody could ever try to emulate because that is unique to her. Nobody else has that. When she looks into the crowd, and there are certain videos that you get lucky and there is a good shot of her because they are kind of rare, but she stares into that camera and you just think I am never going to be able to do that. So that was the hugest thing for us, because for Joan it is all about the music. Even if the movie’s story line completely fell short and people were disappointed by it, if the music was still good she would be good, people are listening.

SBC: Can you both talk about what makes them icons, beyond the obvious, what to you resonated of both characters, both people?

Kristen: Well Joan the first woman to start her own record label. She was basically told after The Runaways broke up, after such a successful extravagant, for a couple of years, time at such a young age, that she was done and that was it and she had peaked. Despite The Runaways success people still didn’t want to hear, people still didn’t like her style, people still thought she was too aggressive, and people didn’t wan to see that in a girl, she was ugly and she wasn’t girlie enough. She is not just a famous musician because she makes cool music, she makes really great music and it is filled with her. She is in her music; she says it all the time, if you want to know me read my lyrics. Or jus listen to the guitar she is playing. So what is cool is that it is not just because of that she made some headway and people should know where she came from; that is why The Runaways is so cool because I didn’t even know about The Runaways, I didn’t even know who they were.

Dakota: For Cherrie I think, what I took away, a lot form her was the sacrifice that she makes and to give up what she loves to do because she even says it today that she would have died, if she had continued on the path she was on. To watch someone give that sacrifice… I was looking at myself and I thinking to myself could I give that up myself and obviously I am not on a downward spiral like she was, but that is a really hard thing to do; and to watch the person that you are closest to become Joan Jett and to have zero resentment and to be so proud of Joan is such an amazing thing to watch in Cherrie; so she is pretty inspiring to me.
