4 questions with Garrett Hedlund from 'Tron: Legacy'

I got an EXCLUSIVE behind the scenes look at the upcoming movie from Disney’s Tron: Legacy, the sequel of the very successful movie Tron in the early 80’s. This one is said to be just as big as Avatar! In my visit to Digital Domain in Los Angeles, the star of the movie Garrett Hedlund was kind enough to give us a private interview and tell me a bit about the movie as well as his future projects. With his charisma, modesty and good looks, he’s a young Bratt Pitt in the making, and Tron: Legacy will surely be what will launch him into stardom!

ShowBizCafe.com (SBC): How do you feel about being involved in such a big project?

Garrett Hedlund (GH): Well, before I was part of the cast I met up with Sean Bailey (producer) and Joseph Kosinski (director) they showed me the footage of the film [they had shown at Comic-Con that year] and I was driven to take this adventure. You step in[to the project] uncertain then get driven by something no-one else has seen and by seeing the blockbuster material there’s fear and nerves come up, because you know this is a big vehicle that a mass amount of people are going to see you as and formulate opinions on whether they like you or not; is a big way of throwing yourself out there. This is such a fantastic team and a hard family to pull away from [he goes on to list the whole cast and crew].

SBC: Can you tell us a little bit about your character Sam Flynn and how you prepared for it and your favorite scene in the film?

GH: Well you start with the script, this character is far from who I was, I grew up in a little farm and this kid has all the money in the world and is haunted by his father’s disappearance. It has been 20 years and he’s turned his back in ENCOM(his father’s company)and is living an individual, secluded life. When someone is very rich it’s easy to make this person dislikable, with money comes a certain attitude. [You are] trying to bring empathy to somebody that has to deal with abandonment who is driven by adventure and accomplishing crazy feats and is also technologically driven and savvy. For this character the wheels are always turning, he’s always trying to figure something out. For me I’m always happy to let be-be. The only thing I can say about my favorite scene is?the light jet, look out for it! (Laughs)

SBC: Talk to us about your upcoming projects.

GH: Earlier this year I did this film Country Strong with Gwyneth Paltrow where we play country singers and have a loving relationship and I got to work with Tim McGraw who plays her husband and Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl. I got to do 6 months of prep for guitar because I had never played before and I would go into the studio every two week to chart the progression? Along the progression you sing ”Song of the Birds” amongst others and then you acquire the songs that your character is going to sing and you start working on those [continuously]. That’s why it was great working with Jeff Bridges for this film because he had already finished Crazy Heart before Tron:Legacy and I’d be in his trailer and he’s be strumming the guitar and playing the songs he played for that and he would try to show me but I couldn’t play or sing for the life of me. So that is a very affecting film [Country Strong], very sad, that’s what I like to do. I gravitate towards the sad; I like sad songs and sad films. This morning I just arrived from the film adaptation of On the Road the Jack Kerouac novel, so we are in the process of that right now, so now I head down to Mexico City.

SBC: Right off the top of your head your top 3 movies.

GH: Wow? Being There with Peter Sellers, Five Easy Pieces from Jack Nicholson, so many great ones, well the one that i’ve seen the most in the theater: I Am Sam with Sean Penn.

Disney Pictures just sent out a press release to all media outlets announcing that Mexican director Guillermo del Toro will be directing The Haunted Mansion.

Below is the actual text from the release:

Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion.

“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White,” said del Toro. “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real
estate in the whole world!”

“Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”

Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the daunting edifice have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo and Paris.

My Sneak Peak at Pixar Studios

As a member of the press you may attend many press junkets over the course of your career. Some you will remember because the film was good, others because the staff was rude; your first just because it was your first. However if your first happens to be at Pixar you will be hard pressed to find a better experience; Pixar Animation Studios is simply unforgettable.

Late Thursday afternoon I got a voicemail from Jack proclaiming an exceptional opportunity has presented itself and he would like for me to get back to him as soon as possible. Now just so you all know I am not much for the leash that is a smart-phone, so we continued to play phone tag into the late hours of the night. Eventually I received an email that went something like this:

 

“Hey Namreta,

ShowBizCafe was offered to go to San Francisco to do the junket with the stars. I’d love for you to be able to experience something this cool at the Pixar Studios. It’s this Saturday.

Thanks.”

At this point I was just ecstatic to go see Toy Story, San Francisco was just going to be icing on the cake. Boy, was I wrong. Watching Toy Story 3 was just the tip of the iceberg.

As we pull up to Pixar Animation Studios for the first time, I begin to realize that Jack just gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, newbie or veteran. It is around six-thirty pm as we all walk toward the front entrance. Outside is a huge replica of the iconic Pixar desk spotlight, Luxo, and the classic toy ball, at the door is the Sunnyside Daycare Welcome sign we are all going to soon add to our repertoire.

As we walk into this warehouse turned studio/office of modern filmmaking at its best there stands a monument of Pixar’s perfection: a life size replica of Ken’s Dollhouse with every detail intact, even a working elevator. We all sign in to our right. Behind the sign-in desk is a case of all the well-deserved awards Pixar has amassed, down to what looks like the Piston Cup itself.

The first night at Pixar we are already being treated to a very special screening in their very own screening room. Being from the New York City area, all the screening rooms I am accustomed to come through floors of elevators to the renovated side of a building. They are spectacular experiences to be had, but they are not The Pixar Screening Room:

We all file into a traditional theatre, red velvet on oak paneled seats with a beautiful curtain to cover the screen. As the house lights turn off, the constellations above reveal themselves. Yes I said constellations, Pixar has re-created stars for the ceiling of the screening room. Complete with shooting stars, Orion’s Belt, The Big Dipper etc. And the film starts with the classic short, another success in Pixar’s case. As Toy Story 3’s credits come to a close I am still glued to my seat. The desk lamp jumps across the screen for the last shot and its beam of light brings on the house lights.

And so at this late hour I still find myself wide-awake, and I am working on NY time. We step outside and realize our sneaking suspicion of the desk lamp outside being turned on for passersby(s) of night is true. The outdoors picnic tables of the entrance are lit by non-other than Luxo.

The following afternoon we return to the site for lunch and our third treat: A tour of The Pixar Animation Studios! More than a tour it is an intimate look at the studios and the movie-making process. Much like the movies themselves the studios are built entirely by Pixar, every last detail. Steve Jobs policy is just that and every screw in the studio has been hand turned to make the studio as much a home as Pixar’s family.

That is the first fact our tour guide pervades us with as we walk through the skylight atrium towards Pixar’s very own café. Even though the food there is good the average employee diet consists mostly of cereal, any and every kind of cereal you can imagine. The places I have worked have had coffee bars and health bars, but Pixar’s kitchens (they have a few spread out through the floors) have cereal bars that the employee’s love to indulge in. If you are worried that too much cereal isn’t going to be healthy (enough) don’t worry they have bicycles that go from building to building for meetings, when they actually have to stop working because we know they never want to, and they have yoga classes for staff in the atrium. But enough about employee perks, how and where the magic happens: In one sentence, it is approximately a four-year process, one and half for story and the following for development.

Screenwriters rejoice, Pixar is a proponent of excellent story-telling due to massive amounts of research, attention to detail, outlining, and constant story boarding. We begin our tour here, with the storyboards that line the upstairs corner in the far left of the studios. On display today are the much-edited original storyboards of “Finding Nemo,” specifically when the shark swallows Marlin and Dory. Just so we are all on the same page, I say much edited because it is almost like looking at an outline of a storyboard. As each character is developed and each plot line explored the whole staff strips each and every possible world before handing over this completed leg of Pixar magic. The story is airtight because this work, much like the next steps, has its in house critics and critiques.

From here we walk along the corridor to the upstairs front left corner. Along the wall are frames of step-by-step artwork that is rotated throughout the year to showcase Pixar’s talent hobbies and talent. In this very corner we begin to discuss the one question that is on all our minds: How can I have your job at Pixar? The straight and narrow is this Pixar is a family. To work for Pixar is not a project-by-project resume building experience. So with a little perseverance and good timing you can fit the mold of the next employee, just remember to reapply on the website approximately every six months, and when you get the first call for an interview remember there can possibly be thirty-eight more to go. Yes we spoke with an engineer who got her job after thirty-nine interviews; of course she would go through them again considering the development of every strand of Violet’s hair is more than worth it.

Which brings us to the point of the tour when we cross the bridge to the right side of the upstairs studio and meet one of the Art Directors. Across the wall is a very colorful storyboard of Toy Story 3 (at least all the major points). Here we learn in great detail, how much detail is in every scene. For those of us who are not almost OCD, as I am, about color schemes and detailed palettes let me be the first to tell you that they can totally change the way you appreciate any Pixar movie, especially after you get a look at this wall. What is highlighted here is how color affects the viewer. So as not to give anything form the film away (mostly because I liked it and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone), let me just says this, the color of Andy’s clothes are not accidental, the serene lighting on Bonnie is supposed to make you think of her pure and innocent character, the eerie unsaturated grey’s are supposed to make you apprehensive, and as red always is it is a sign of danger. But Art Direction is not just color it is about the entire setting and much like Pixar is a family project, we learned that the paintings of all our favorite characters in Toy Story were drawn by non-other than Lee Unkrich’s children.

And so from the detailed model’s and another line up of highly organized artwork we are led back to the far right corner of the upstairs, from where we head to the very special software animation room. This room is perhaps one of the best parts of the tour, as they say save the best for last. So imagine a home theatre system, a relatively smaller room than screening rooms, with couches that rise to the back so everyone has the perfect view and comfort. In the center of the room is a set up of computers and engineering software. This is where every frame’s every detail is examined and cross-examined.

What I was privileged enough to see as an example was how Woody was updated to match the modern day animation engineering. Toy Story was the first computer animated film of it’s kind, but ten years later that original computer cannot stand up to its new competition so Woody was masterfully recreated from scratch. As we were told numerous times on our tour, think of each element, especially the characters, as software programs. When writing these programs there are a million different options, so how does Pixar know what to chose and where to draw the line. Simple, once a character is simulated everyone gets together, in groups, and they sift through acceptable changes and unacceptable changes.

As with everything Pixar, all of this work is done in house. So as everyone thanks Pixar for a great show and readies themselves for the interviews with the stars I take a moment to digest this surreal moment before the next.

Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland'

It’s finally here! Tim Burton’s new phantasmagorical Real-3D remake of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is a bore. All that eye-popping colorful imagery was just eye candy to sidetrack us from focusing on the anemic script adaptation. Even though it is one of Burton’s most beautiful films, it is not his best. This goes to show you that story is everything. The acting performances were vacuous and the entertainment value was surprisingly subpar. Will kids like it? Yeah sure, kids like almost anything that looks like a video game.

Burton’s adaptation centers around Alice (Mia Wasikowska), a young british teenager who falls down a tree hole and rediscovers all the marvels of a surreal place called Wonderland.

There is something to be said about the director’s need to create a movie that has been filmed so many times by so many people in so many countries. Does he think his will be the definitive one? Disney might argue that. Burton is a remake master and there is a major flaw with that method of filmmaking – you are always going against the original, therefore your version will most likely always be weaker.

Alice in Wonderland is not funny or charming but a bit fatuous and insipid. It drags in various places especially in the beginning. Much of this tediousness is due to the bad acting of the female protagonist Mia Wasikowska. Talk about needing some acting classes. She was neither convincing nor surprised at anything, but rather seemed arrogant and spoiled. Mr. Eccentric himself, Johnny Depp, couldn’t hit the magical and funny strides of his predecessor Captain Jack Sparrow from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’ The rest of the cast was mediocre at best, so was the whole movie.

On some high notes, the cinematography is outstanding, kudos to Dariusz Wolski for hitting a home run. The 3D experience was very fun, but any 3D film that comes out after Avatar is going to pale in comparison. Nevertheless, for those of you that rarely see three dimensional movies, it’s a trip and a half. The great moments are few and the yawning moments are plenty. If you think that the 3D scenes and the colorful visuals will be enough to amuse you, think again. The glasses will start to weigh on you and the english accent will begin to annoy you. That’s what happens when a movie you think is going to be great turns out be a dud!

Monday Box Office - Disney's "G-Force" is #1!

Neither the magic of Harry Potter nor the combined star power of Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler was enough to keep a crew of wise-cracking guinea pigs from scurrying to the top of the box office this weekend. Disney’s family comedy G-Force, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Will Arnett, and Penelope Cruz as a team of world-saving rodents, made an estimated $32.2 million in its debut. Despite opening hot on the heels of the one-week old Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the animation/live action hybrid pic was a hit with young audiences, pulling 55 percent of its viewers from the under-18 crowd.

But Potter’s box office magic hasn’t worn off just yet: The series’ sixth installment landed in the number two spot its second weekend with $30 million, bringing its total to $221.8 million. After just 12 days in theaters, Half-Blood is already the fifth biggest hit of the year domestically, not to mention overseas, where the powerhouse has raked in an additional $236 million.

There was plenty for adults to enjoy at the box office, too. The Ugly Truth, a raunchy R-rated rom-com that pits Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in a battle of the sexes, scored an impressive $27 million bow, a career best for both Heigl and director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde).

The weekend’s other wide release, Warner Bros’ creepy Orphan — starring Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga — pulled in $12.8 million from an audience that was 55 percent female.

Lower down on the chart, Fox Searchlight’s (500) Days of Summer (at number 11 with $3 million) is still building momentum. The quirky rom-com posted a hefty $19,176 per-site average and a 95 percent increase over its debut last weekend.

Walt Disney Co.’s romantic comedy “The Proposal” debuted as the top film in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend, as star Sandra Bullock’s best-ever opener gave the company its second No. 1 movie in a month.

“The Proposal” had $34.1 million in ticket sales, researcher Hollywood.com Box-Office said yesterday in an e- mailed statement. Time Warner Inc.’s “The Hangover” slipped to second with $26.9 million, while “Up” from Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios had $21.3 million in receipts.

The two Disney movies have brought in a combined $258.2 million since the animated 3-D feature “Up” opened at No. 1 four weeks ago. Bullock is identified with romantic comedies, and “The Proposal” gave audiences exactly what they went for, said Brandon Gray, president of Box Office Mojo in Sherman Oaks, California.

“Sandra is probably an underrated star, because she’s one of the few who can actually draw an audience when she’s in the right movie,” Gray said. “A lot of movies suffer from a lack of clarity or a lack of information in their advertisements, but ‘The Proposal’ was on point and promised a rollicking romantic good time for all.”

In “The Proposal,” Bullock plays an executive who faces deportation to her native Canada. She tries to fool U.S. immigration authorities by having her assistant, played by Ryan Reynolds, pose as her American fiancé. Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru LLC, projected the film to earn as much as $22 million in its debut weekend.

‘The Hangover’

The top 12 films this weekend grossed $140.7 million, up 1.64 percent from a year earlier, Hollywood.com said. Ticket sales for all films rose 2.85 percent to $147 million.

“The Hangover,” a comedy about the aftermath of a bachelor party gone awry in Las Vegas, was the top film the two previous weekends. It has taken in $152.9 million since it opened on June 5.

“‘The Hangover’ is like a hangover; it just won’t go away,” Gray said. “It’s one of the great box-office successes of the year.”

“Up” is Disney’s most successful film this year with $224.1 million in receipts since its May 29 release and has helped lift the studio from last place among its Hollywood peers. The movie, featuring the voice of Ed Asner, drew family audiences with its story of an accidental friendship between a young boy and an elderly man who finally achieves his dream of foreign travel.

‘Pelham 1 2 3’

“Year One,” from Sony Corp., debuted in fourth place with $20.2 million. The film stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as hapless hunter-gatherers kicked out of their tribe for violating a taboo. Their wanderings lead to run-ins with Cain and Abel and other Old Testament figures. “Year One” was forecast by Pandya to generate $20 million in sales.

Sony’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, fell to fifth from third with $11.3 million.

Sony Pictures Classic’s “Whatever Works,” by director Woody Allen, took in $280,720 in nine theaters, the best limited-release opener this year, according to Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst at Hollywood.com Box-office. The per- theater average of $31,191 was triple the $11,163 for “The Proposal.” The film will expand into more than 300 theaters on July 3, according to Dergarabedian.

‘Transformers’

A comedy led box-office sales for a fifth consecutive weekend. That may end next week when Viacom Inc. releases “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” a sequel to 2007’s “Transformers.” Advance sales for the sequel were ahead of the first film by a 3-to-1 margin as of June 17, according to online vendor MovieTickets.com.

The movie, which opens June 24, has the potential to gross more than $200 million in its first seven days, nearing the record $238.6 million set by “The Dark Knight” in July 2008, Gray said.

The original “Transformers,” released in 2007, opened with $70.5 million and took in $708.3 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which tracks receipts.

Pixar Studios, the last film house in Hollywood that draws an audience on its name alone, scored its 10th straight No. 1 film as Up soared above the competition this weekend.

The animated comedy about a widower and young boy who travel in a flying house raked in $68.2 million, according to studio estimates from Nielsen EDI.

 

The debut slightly exceeded the expectations of analysts — who expect a lot from the studio behind Finding Nemo, WALL·E and Toy Story.

And the film delivered on virtually every count, scoring an A-plus from CinemaScore and a recommendation from 98% of the nation’s films critics, according to RottenTomatoes.com.

“Pixar rarely has big stars in its movies,” says Gitesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru.com. “Ed Asner (the star voice of Up) is not known for opening big. Pixar relies on their reputation for quality. And they’re 10 for 10.”

Chuck Viane, distribution chief for Disney, which distributes Pixar’s films, says that while families drove Up‘s business, nearly a third of the audience was adults without children.

“I think Pixar has a way of turning stories into ‘gotta see’ movies for adults,” Viane says. “They get an unusually even blend of ages.”

Up marked the third-largest Pixar debut, behind The Incredibles‘ $70.5 million and Finding Nemo‘s $70.3 million.

The studio has created anticipation for its films with patience. Up is only the 10th film in the studio’s 14-year history.

“They take their time,” Viane says. “They’ll tweak a story over and over until they’re satisfied. The highest compliment you can pay to them is they’re in no rush and get the job done right.”

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian was second with $25.5 million for a 10-day total of $105.3 million.

Despite stellar reviews, Sam Raimi’s return to schlock horror with Drag Me to Hell managed only third place and $16.8 million. Most analysts projected the horror film, which earned thumbs-up from 94% of reviewers, to collect at least $20 million.

Terminator Salvation ($16.1 million) was fourth, followed by Star Trek ($12.8 million).

Ticket sales dipped 24% from last weekend and 1% from the same weekend last year. Final numbers are out today.

In one of the more unusual duels at the North American box office, a perky Disney romantic musical trumped the fifth installment in the grisly “Saw” horror series, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

“High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” the first big-screen adaptation of Walt Disney Co’s popular TV movie franchise, sold $42 million worth of tickets during its first three days. The opening sets a new record for a musical, surpassing the $27.8 million bow of the ABBA-themed romance “Mamma Mia!” in July.

“Saw V” followed with $30.5 million, in line with the previous three installments. Moviegoers can expect additional sequels of both films.

The one-two punch of the disparate duo propelled overall weekend sales to their highest level in 10 weeks. The top 12 films grossed $120 million, according to tracking firm Media By Numbers, up about 40 percent from both last weekend and the year-ago weekend.

But the news was not all good. The new cop drama “Pride and Glory,” starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell, opened at No. 5 with just $6.3 million. It marks the second consecutive dud for Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros. following “Body of Lies,” starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, two weeks ago.

Disney, on the other hand, is enjoying a strong fall, first with “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” three weeks ago, and now with “High School Musical 3.” The movie also opened in 19 international markets, and was No. 1 in each of them, led by Britain with $13 million.

“Saw V” is the latest installment in the spectacularly profitable torture franchise that kicked off in 2004. Every October since then, a new “Saw” movie has opened at No. 1 in the $30 million range. Total sales peaked at $87 million for “Saw II,” and the film’s distributor, Lionsgate, hopes the new one will finish up in the $60 million range.

The studio, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, said “Saw” will soon become the biggest horror franchise, with total domestic sales about $1 million short of the $318 million haul of the 11 “Friday the 13th” films.

Last weekend’s champ, the Mark Wahlberg thriller “Max Payne,” slipped to No. 3 with $7.6 million, taking its 10-day haul to $29.7 million. The film was released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

Zac Efron could be casted in "Pirates 4" and "Musical 4"

The latest rumor hitting the high seas — MTV UK reports that Zac Efron has signed on to star in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, for the prime sum of 6 million pounds — a deal that would also glue him to another HSM sequel. But rumor control is already in the works. MTV, stateside, reports that this all came from The National Enquirer, and that there’s no truth to the story. They talked to Efron, who says the rumors aren’t true, although he’d definitely be interested. Gee, ya think?

Whoever cooked up this rumor at least thought it out — Zac might not be interested in more HSM, but I bet he’d agree to more for the chance to star in a huge Disney feature that reaches beyond the teen girls and allows him to act alongside Depp. And from the studio’s side, Sparrow’s last male rival couldn’t hold a torch to Johnny, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney did it again.

Orlando Bloom might have been one heck of a Legolas, but I just hated him in Pirates. His charisma, or lack thereof, was no match for Depp, and to give Johnny another star that can’t give him a run for his money … that would be a shame. This franchise’s best bet: focus on Sparrow with a few co-stars who can rival Depp’s charisma and chemistry. Any suggestions?
