We begin April with some very popular and auteur directors releasing films this week. First, Spaniard director Nacho Vigalondo gets together with a solid cast that includes Anne Hathaway in what is a crazy sci-fi/comedy called Colossal. Also, former Spider-Man director Marc Webb tries to tug at the heart with his new film Gifted and Romanian helmer Cristian Mungiu who made the indelible “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” gives us Graduation that delves into the role parents play today with their grown children. And how can we forget Arnold? He returns to the screen in Aftermath, written by a Latino writer named Javier Gullón. You definitely have a lot to look for this weekend. October could very well be the single best month to watch movies of 2013. When you do a quick overview of the films being released this month, five of them are the frontrunners to win Best Picture at the Oscars 2014. Many of these movies possess all star casts, top flight directors and innovative and fresh stories. They are also coming fresh off of great reviews at Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals. Not to be ignored are the commercial fare which includes Arnold and Sly together in a full feature film as opposed to cameos and one of the greatest assembled cast of Hispanics in film history in ‘Machete Kills‘ and ‘The Counselor‘. Do yourself a service, if you haven’t been to the movies all year, this is the one month you should step out and watch one.

Michelle Rodriguez films in the Dominican Republic

Notorious Hollywood actress Michelle Rodríguez goes back to her Dominican and Puerto Rican roots to film ‘Tropicos de Sangre’ (Tropical Blood) in the Dominican Republic. The story, based on the true story, revolves around the death of the three Mirabal sisters. Filming begins in November, in different localities of the country. Rodríguez is immersed in merengue classes, spanish dictionin preparation for the role.

“When I got the offer to be a part of this project, I thrusted myself in it 100% and saw it as a great challenge in my career”.

“Understanding the importance that this story marked in the history of the Dominican’s democracy and the world is important to me”, Rodríguez added. Together with Juan De Láncer, the director of the movie, Michelle has been visiting the the locations where it will be filmed. Some of the other stars are César Evora as Antonio de la Maza and Juan Fernandez as Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, both stand-out local actors.
