Looking for an excuse to break out that gown that cost you an arm and a leg, or that tux that has been sitting in your closer since your prom days? Well honey, you’re going to the theater!
Viva Broadway is hosting a “West Side Story” screening and an appearance with star Rita Moreno. The 1961 film directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, is based on the Broadway musical and book of the same title.
The event, done in coalition with the United Palace of Cultural Arts in Washington Heights, is a part of “Sunday Movies at the Palace with Lin-Manuel Miranda.”
Miranda – a Puerto Rican composer, rapper, lyricist, actor and writer of the Broadway musical “In the Heights” – will act as the master of ceremonies and will introduce the featured film with a stage show featuring a conversation with Moreno, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1962 for her performance in the movie.
The screening will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at United Palace Theatre on 175th Street and Broadway. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. Guests in tuxedos or gowns are welcome to a free bag of popcorn at the concession stand. Tickets are $10 online, $15 at the door, and $5 for children under 12 years old.
