This might be the first-ever Joker you’ll sympathize with. “I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realize it’s a comedy.” He’s almost relatable. As the first trailer shows, Arthur Fleck is bullied, humiliated, and punched. Joaquin Phoenix seems to be exploring the profundity of the character and exhuming his never-before-seen vulnerabilities that ultimately gave way to the deranged maniac known as the Joker. Watch the trailer after the cut and see if you get the chills from this origin story.
If you’re one of the ones that are right now grumbling that Phoenix is no Heath Ledger, then you’re looking at this whole thing wrong.
This is a psychological thriller that tells you more about how Arthur Fleck, a young man who’s always been taught to smile at life (the irony’s so sweet), becomes broken by society. This society will soon reflect his new identity. Many people will agree, the Joker character is a role made for actors. It has easy to be one of the most challenging to inhabit. It’s a role that can make you and break you.
The director of The Hangover is making another movie, but this time he’s trying to convince us that it’s okay for the Joker being evil. No matter the case, this seems to have a touch of artsiness that could propel the film to some award talk for 2020.
Joker will arrive in theaters on October 4, 2019.
