If you’re a culture vulture like me, you must be bummed you can’t use this time during the coronavirus to enjoy the arts in your city. But fret not, as we are slowly coming to grips with the impending reality that we are going to become a virtual society for the foreseeable future, here is a calendar of virtual events to keep your mind distracted and instructed. Get ready to be busy!
Calendar Of Virtual Events During The Coronavirus
Ballet
If dancing ballet is how you want to spend more of your quarantine time, try the Ballet Hispanico which is celebrating 50 years with a new Instagram video series called B Unidos, which will begin airing each weekday at 3:00 pm starting now. The company will release a new video generated by the dancers, teachers, and administrators to serve as a class, exercise, and inspiration: Motivational Mondays (inspirational messages), Take Action Tuesdays (technique tips for young dancers), Wepa Wednesdays (explorations of the many varied styles of Latin Dance), Therapeutic Thursdays (focus on conditioning, health, and wellness, stretching), and Flashback Fridays (retrospective looks at past 50 years from Ballet Hispanico’s archives). Culture
America’s foremost cultural center, The Lincoln Center, is launching Lincoln Center at Home, a new initiative to maintain vital connections during the COVID-19 pandemic. From Pop-Up Classrooms to #ConcertsForKids to virtual tours, the family can hunker down and learn and experience the best culture the city has to offer from the comfort of their own home.
Movies
The term “going to the movies” seems obsolete right about now, but this now allows us to experiment with new ways of consuming content. AppleTV+ has released, The Banker, a film carrying Oscar buzz last year which was never released in theaters due to a sexual harassment investigation. Starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, The Banker is the story of two black businessmen who defy the racial and prejudiced housing laws of America in the 1960s to create an equal playing field for blacks to achieve the American Dream. Unlike other on-demand platforms, this movie is free to watch. In other words, if you have AppleTV+, you are golden!
Museum
When was the last time you took a tour of The Metropolitan Museum of Art? Whether it was yesterday or 20 years ago, you’ll see the world’s best museum in a way you have never seen before. Inspired by the film ‘Russian Ark,’ this award-winning 360 virtual tour is entrancing. The slow, fluid, floating visuals alone are worth the investment in time. Virtual Tour
Opera
Porgy & Bess at The Met: If opera is something you’ve had on your to-do list, this is the right time to start catching up. Make it a “self-quarantine date night” with the Mrs. and the Metropolitan Opera House. It is offering daily live streams (when the site hasn’t crashed from so much web traffic) for the duration of the Met’s closure with different encore presentations from the company’s Live in HD series. Livestream link. You can also see programs at the Vienna Opera House whose website has not crashed as of yet. Livestream link.
The Theater
Jersey Boys: And if the stage is more your calling, BroadwayHD has a 7-day free trial to watch almost any Broadway show you’ve seen or haven’t seen. Who loves you, pretty baby? Also, the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization announced a new YouTube livestream series called R&H Goes Live! featuring several Broadway actors, including Jeremy Jordan (Newsies) performing an acoustic version of “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! live on Wednesday, March 25 at 1 pm ET on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s YouTube channel.
Classical Music
The Berlin Philharmonic: For some European flair, the Berlin Philharmonic is offering a month of free access to its Digital Concert Hall where you can watch upcoming concerts (A Latin American “Late Night” concert with Gustavo Dudamel, June 2020) and past concerts on Beethoven, Strauss, Bach and more. If you know of any other events you can stream, send them over and we’ll include them.
