Let’s Breakdown The ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Trailer!

11.26.2015 | By |

Marvel Studios released our first look at Captain America: Civil War on Wednesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! Loosely based on the 2006 limited-series by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, Civil War pits superhero against superhero, with one side led by Captain America and the other by Iron Man.You’ll be forgiven if you think this film is simply Marvel’s answer to Warner Bros.’s upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But whereas Warner Bros. is rushing to pit Batman against Superman after Man of Steel, Marvel has been building towards this confrontation for years; with groundwork laid down all the way back in the first Avengers.

There is a LOT going on in the trailer, so let’s take a look at some choice shots, and see if we can find some hints to the biggest battle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer picks up with a new look at the bonus scene from Ant-Man, with the erstwhile Winter Soldier, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) captured by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).CACV1This scene presumably happens somewhere in the first act, after Bucky has been framed for some terrible crime. The scene also reveals Bucky has overcome Hydra’s mind control.CACV2Presumably this is the crime Bucky’s been accused of, blowing up a UN building.CACV3Bucky on the run. The Russo Brothers really know how to direct action.CACV4Based on the design on this helicopter, I wouldn’t be surprised if this belongs to the Black Panther. Who is the Black Panther, you ask? Wait and see.CACV5

CACV6This film marks the welcome (and, let’s be honest, surprising) return of William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross, last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

Ross presents Capt. with the “Sokovia Accord,” which is a “Framework for the Registration and Deployment of Enhance Individuals.” Based on the “Superhero Registration Act” which divided heroes in the comics, the “Sokovia Accord” is a direct response to the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron which decimated the fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia.CACV7In voiceover, Ross promises that there will be consequences as Capt. is surrounded by armed police. Behind him (off screen) is Bucky. Presumably, this comes after Capt. has rescued Bucky.CACV8CACV9CACV10Iron Man arrives on scene and things. Get. Real. “Captain. You seem a little defensive,” a bruised Tony quips. “Well, it’s been a long day.”

The question is where does this scene occur in the film? We can see what appears to be Bucky over Captain America’s shoulder. With the driving force of this film seemingly Capt.’s decision to protect Bucky after he is framed, this may be the moment when Capt. and Iron Man put aside their differences and fight their real enemy.CACV11He’s blurry but you can JUST see Sherlock’s Martin Freeman in his mysterious, unnamed role and Emily Van Camp as Sharon Carter.

In voiceover, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers lay out the differences between them. Marvel has spent years with these characters, building them over the course of a dozen films. Stark isn’t the same man we met in the first film, in everyway his state of mind is a direct reaction to the events of Age of Ultron, while Capt. remains the kind of man who stands up to bullies.  It also might retroactively make Age of Ultron a better film. If Marvel has proven anything, these films aren’t meant to be solely standalone adventures, but chapters to a very, very large narrative.CACV12“Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth,” Tony Stark says in a vagrant example of foreshadowing. Let’s also note how well the trailer shows that this is film is indeed Captain America’s story and not Avengers 2.5.CACV13There’s been some chatter on the internet that the guy in red in blue in the center of the frame is Spider-man. He’s not. This scene probably takes place in Wakanda, Africa, and that there is simply a stunned onlooker. Why is he stunned? Because Falcon’s new wings are amazing.CACV14Don Cheadle returns as War Machine to fight alongside Iron Man. But who’s on the other side?CACV15This is one of first looks at Captain America’s team, which includes Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen.) And maybe a super tiny Paul Rudd as Ant-Man?CACV16Oh my God. It’s the BLACK PANTHER. Chadwick Boseman enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as T’Challa, the benevolent king/superhero of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Black Panther will eventually star in his own film in a few years, and I just want you all to sit back and appreciate how pitch perfect his costume is. Seriously kids, you have no idea how good you’ve got it.CACV17“We fight.” Capt.’s team runs into battle. And it seems like Scarlet Witch has learned how to fly.CACV18 CACV19Here are some shots of Black Panther. Because, he’s BLACK PANTHER.CACV20Stark leans over an incapacitated (and/or dead) War Machine, presumably after the battle we saw earlier. I have the feeling this film is going to be an emotional rollercoaster, moving from the excited “Superheroes Fighting!” to the shocked “Oh man… The Superheroes are… fighting.”CACV21“Sorry, Tony. You know I wouldn’t do this if I had any other choice. But he’s my friend.”

“So was I.”

And this right here, is the exact moment Tony Stark’s heart breaks in two.CACV22And this, kids, is the most badass, terrifying, awesome shot in the entire damn trailer. Captain America and Bucky kicking Iron Man’s iron butt.

It is an amazing trailer. Much more profound than BvS, which looks too much like a video game.
