So, that screaming you heard during Monday Night Football wasnât New York Giants fans celebrating, it was the screaming of Star Wars fans around the world getting the latest glimpse at the new The Force Awakens trailer!
As ShowBizCafeâs resident geek I was conscripted (read: volunteered) to do a breakdown of the latest trailer, because I was going to do it anyway. Take a look at trailer below then see what we found.
Please note: All of this is speculation based on whatâs been officially released by Lucasfilm. If Iâm right on any of this, you all owe my five dollars. So, here we go.
Here we have what will probably be our introduction to Daisy Ridleyâs Rey savaging inside what is presumably the remains of the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflictor, which crashed during the Empireâs last stand during the Battle of Jakku roughly one year after the destruction of the Second Death Star. (We witnessed this in the novel Star Wars: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray).
But who is Reyâ¦? Well, sheâs âno one.â She has BB-8, but sheâs on her own. You might even say sheâs solo.
Here are the First Order troops at a Trump rally on Starkiller Base, which is presumably that big Death Star-like thing on the recent poster. According to StarWars.com Starkiller Base is capable of destroying an entire star system. The Imperials got on upgrade! According to officially released information, after Jakku the Empire withdrew to a distance part of the galaxy where they remained hidden for years. We can assume they spent that time converting a planet into a massive super weapon.
John Boyegaâs Finn in voiceoverâusing a distinctly not-British accentâreflects on how he was âraised to do one thingâ but that didnât work out so well. What made Finn defect the First Order? Did he learn about Starkiller Base?
Anyone else hear Ben Kenobi saying âa hive of scum and villainyâ when you saw this shot?
Kylo Ren (not his real name) doing his best Darth Vader with J.J. Abramsâs doing his best lens flare from the Starkiller Base blast destroying a star system? Maybe? Probably.
Adam Driverâs Kylo Ren promising Darth Vaderâs burned helmet that he will finish what Darth Vader started. Talk about a creepy fan base. Or incredible meta-commentary between Abrams and Lucas. Either way, Iâm betting Kylo is trying to honor his grandfather.
Kylo Ren interrogates (I think) Oscar Isaacâs Poe Dameron. Either way, the Resistance fighter isnât having a good time.
A planet getting destroyed by Starkiller Base?
âThere were stories about what happened,â Rey says in voiceover and holy God, this is the most Star Wars shot ever. Just⦠Here is my wallet, Disney.
Here is the Millennium Falcon. Just because.
Rey and Finn listen to Han Solo. âItâs true. All of it,â Harrison Ford says, giving his most convincing performance in YEARS. Also, letâs reflect on how much Hanâs character evolved, going from someone laughing at the very idea of the Force, to telling the next generation that the Dark Side and the Jedi are real.
Here is a shot of THE MILLENNIUN FALCON IN HYPERSPACE. Seriously, kids, you donât know how good you got it. Most of us have been waiting 32 years for this. THAT IS MY ENTIRE LIFE.
Is this Kylo and the other Knights of Ren, or simply his ren-faire buddies? Iâm guessing itâs probably not the latter. Either way, that is a lot of dead bodies around them.
The latest split-winged X-Wings of the Resistance move to attack the First Order on a forest planet. Not to knock the prequels, but, man oh man, there is something about having the Stormtroopers be actual people in actual suits on an actual set.
There are two ways to read this exchange between Finn and Poe Dameron. Bromance or Frenemies. Iâm voting Bromance, but Poe doesnât know Finn was once a Stormtrooper and Finn feels guilty.
Presumably this is Han taking Rey, Finn, and BB-8 to meet Lupita Nyongâoâs Maz Kanata. Also notice the flag with Boba Fettâs icons at the top of the frame. #FettLives
Everyone is asking âWhere is Luke?â and Iâm kinda thinking thatâs the point. Expect him to play a small but pivotal role in the film, while possibly playing larger roles later on in the series. (I hope, at least!)
Gwendoline Christieâs Captain Phasma is more badass you. Deal with it, Menâs Rights Activist.
Rey is crying, which means someone probably died. Look, Iâm not a betting man, but at least one of the original cast isnât making it out of this film alive, and Iâm guessing itâs the guy with the most screentime.
Han, Chewie, and Finn lower their arms after being captured. Considering the background, Iâm assuming itâs the same planet the aerial battle is occurring. And, Chewie has a boo-boo on his arm. Leia, in voiceover says: âThe Force is calling to youâ¦â Who is she talking to? Well, thatâs the question, ainât it?
Notice the long trench, evoking the Death Star? Is this the attack on Starkiller Base? Signs point to yes.
Han embracing Leia. Shut up. Iâm not crying. Youâre crying.
Finn and mask-less Kylo Ren face off and Finn realizes he is in over his head. Iâm guessing Kyloâs identity plays a major role in this film and the reveal will be heartbreaking for his parents.
