While promoting ‘The Adjustment Bureau‘ in New York, Matt Damon confessed he has begged the brilliant Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar to do a movie together. He says he’s up to the challenge of working in a Spanish-language film.
Why Matt Damon Wants To Work With Pedro Almodóvar
Damon’s confession comes at the heel of the news that Michael Cera is going to Chile to do a movie completely in Spanish with Sebastian Silva (The Maid). Will Ferrell kick-started the crossover movement when it was announced Ferrell would be doing a new comedy in Spanish with Mexican icons Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.
“I’ve been begging Pedro Almodóvar for years to give me a job in one of his films.” Damon said of Almodovar, the Spanish director whose works include ‘Volver’ and ‘All About Your Mother’. “Some of the best directors in the world are [Hispanic], ah, Iñárritu, there’s just a ton of guys right now,” Damon explained.
Matt Damon Discusses Working In Spanish Movies
Damon is factually right. Four of the last ten Oscar winners or nominated directors are from Spain and speak Spanish. One of them is Pedro Almodóvar, and another is Guillermo Del Toro. Cuarón and González Iñáritu are both Spanish-speaking Mexicans who have been nominated for Academy Awards in the past decade. Damon added how difficult it is for any actor to work in a different language and be successful.
“You know, I think about Penélope [Cruz] or these actresses that I’ve worked with who are acting in their second language, it’s unbelievably challenging, it’s really, really challenging, it’s a whole other thing. I’d love to work with one of those master directors in a Spanish-language film for the challenge. I feel like I can do it. As an American, I wouldn’t pass as a Mexican, or Puerto Rican, but no, I’d love the challenge,” he explained.
American actors and actresses are moving to Spanish dramas in order to secure a higher level of respect, attention, and praise. The question is who is the next Hollywood actor to take the leap?
