Would you ever have thought that Woody Allen would be teaming up with Barranquillera Sofia Vergara in a movie? The mere thought is already funny and they’re not even the lead stars. The real protagonist is John Turturro who directs and stars.
The movie focuses on Fioravante (Turturro) who decides to become a professional Don Juan as a way of making money to help his cash-strapped friend, Murray (Allen). With Murray acting as his “manager”, the duo quickly finds themselves caught up in the crosscurrents of love and money.
The problem with Turturro’s film is that it feels like a Woody Allen film – from the quirky premise, to the New York location, to the characters, it all screams out Woody. Plus, you put Woody in there (he looks like he steals all the scenes) and Turturro minus well have been hired by Allen.
Allen in a press conference once said regarding Fading Gigolo, that he’s doing the movie because Turturro asked. He then said, he’d act more in other movies, but no directors call him… at all! I don’t understand how! He’s magic on screen! Here’s the audio of him answering the question I asked him about Fading Gigolo and the reason he rarely acts anymore. It’s hilarious, but true!
There is still no official release date on Fading Gigolo, but we do know it’ll be seen at the Toronto Film Festival this year.
