‘Zero Dark Thirty’ finally on top of the box office

'Zero Dark Thirty' finally on top of the box office

Zero Dark Thirty’ opened in limited theaters four weeks ago, now that it has opened nationwide it took the number one spot with $24 million dollars. The nominations it got for the Oscars and the controversial story have certainly helped it get to this place, not to mention outstanding performances.

Marlon Wayane’s ‘A Haunted House’ surprisingly opened in second place with $18.8 million dollars. The film has received terrible reviews and based on its predecessors no one expected it to do so well, despite that it will most likely fall from the top 10 soon.

Gangster Squad’ which has a number of known names attached to it such as Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and the likes of Josh Brolin only reached number three with $16.7 million dollars. Because of the Newton shooting the film was delayed and this seems to have hurt it, reviews might have helped to its demise as well.

The Top 10 in the Box Office are:

1. Zero Dark Thirty – $24 mil

2. A Haunted House – $18.8 mil

3. Gangster Squad – $16.7 mil

4. Django Unchained – $11.1 mil

5. Les Miserables – $10.1 mil

6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $9.1 mil

7. Lincoln – $6.3 mil

8. Parental Guidance – $6.1 mil

9. Texas Chainsaw 3D – $5.2 mil

10. Silver Linings Playbook – $5 mil

Exclusive! Argo’s Real Tony Mendez: “I’m Not Hispanic”

01.10.2013 | By |

For the Latino moviegoers who have already seen Argo or those who will now see it due to the 7 Oscar nominations it received today from the Academy, you might be submerged into the controversy that has arisen from the big reveal in the movie… Ben Affleck who directs and stars in “Argo“, is named Tony Mendez, an obvious Latino. So why did Affleck (an Irish guy) play him as opposed to a true Latino actor? What did Tony Mendez, the real life CIA agent that inspired the film, think? And is he really Latino (I couldn’t find any detailed news on his heritage on the web)? Many Latinos are upset at Affleck’s logic here so I decided to go to the main source – Mendez himself. In this exclusive interview, I asked him about his Latino roots, Affleck’s decision not to hire a Latino thespian to play the lead role and much, much more. Read More

Robert Rodriguez hires Josh Brolin for ‘Sin City 2’

01.8.2013 | By |

Robert Rodriguez hires Josh Brolin for 'Sin City 2'

New York, NY January 8, 2013 – Today Dimension Films announced another big name that has been added to the SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR cast roster, further ramping up the ensemble – Academy Award® nominee Josh Brolin (GANGSTER SQUAD, MILK).  Brolin will star as “Dwight” in the follow up to FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY for co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.  The part of the “Dame” has yet to be cast.

Dwight is one of the favorite characters from Miller’s books and the 2005 film.  In SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell.  Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” (featured in the film FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.

“Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and “A Dame To Kill For” is a defining episode in his life.  We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight,” said Rodriguez and Miller.

Brolin will next be seen alongside Sean Penn in the Warner Bros. 1940’s police drama Gangster Squad set for release January 11, 2013.  Brolin recently completed production on the Jason Reitman-directed film Labor Day opposite Kate Winslet, in addition to Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of the popular Korean film.  Brolin last appeared as young “Agent K” in Men in Black 3, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and co-starring Will Smith and Emma Thompson.  In 2008, Brolin was nominated for an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and received awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review for his portrayal of ‘Dan White’ in Gus Van Sant’s acclaimed film Milk. Prior to that, Brolin earned a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of an ensemble for his work in Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men, which also won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants.

The star studded ensemble includes already announced original cast members Academy Award® nominee Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Rosario Dawson as “Gail” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy” with new cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt as “Johnny,” Dennis Haysbert as “Manute” and Jamie Chung as “Miho.”  Production is underway at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Miller.

The film will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on October 4, 2013 and produced by Robert Rodriguez‘s Quick Draw Productions, Aldamisa, AR Films, Miramax and Solipsist.  International sales are through Aldamisa International.

Jessica Chastain on horror movies: "They’re fun to cuddle"

Jessica Chastain on horror movies: "They're fun to cuddle"

The Guillermo del Toro produced supernatural thriller “MAMA” will be out in theaters January 18th starring Jessica Chastain, a huge win for the Spanish origin movie since Chastain will most likely be nominated and win an Oscar for Best Actress for “Zero Dark Thirty”.

Chastain plays Annabel, who takes care of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed.  When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.

When I caught up with her recently during a press day for “MAMA” I asked her what it is that people like about horror films.

“I like them because they’re fun to cuddle,” Chastain said. “Here’s the thing, I don’t like going to slasher films where people get cut up. Some of those films are fine, but I don’t like that, it makes me feel weird. But I like horror films like “The Exorcist” or “The Others” or “The Orphanage” or “The Ring”. I like the ones that build the tension really strongly because I do like to cuddle. I like to see a film with… if you don’t have a partner with you or a boyfriend or whatever, a group of friends, it’s fun to have that kind of experience.”

The Heiress” actress from Broadway gave me a surprisingly personalized answer, as she gave some insight into her love life. According to the reactions on her face, it sounded as if no one at the moment filled the role of providing a strong shoulder during scary scenes, of perhaps, her own movie “MAMA”.

Synopsis: Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace.  Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica), have been madly searching for them.  But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home. As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house.  Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them?  How did the broken girls survive those years all alone?  As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Why do you think people like horror movies so much? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Jessica Alba's new 'Escape From Planet Earth' trailer!

Jessica Alba, George Lopez and Sofia Vergara are the Hispanic stars that are lending their voice to the new animated film ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH from The Weinstein Company. A new trailer has just been released and we have the poster attached as well just in case you haven’t seen it.

The 3D animated family comedy catapults moviegoers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA’s no-nonsense chief Lena (Jessica Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary’s warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (William Shatner) it’s up to scrawny, risk-adverse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure hungry son Kip.

The film also stars Jane Lynch, Craig Robinson, Steve Zahn, Chris Parnell, Jonath Morgan Heit, James Corden, Brendan Fraser, Rob Corddry, Sarah Jessica Parker and William Shatner

ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH will be released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2013.
