‘Expendables 2’ still strong

08.27.2012 | By |

'Expendables 2' still strong

This week the box office remains intact with ‘The Expendables 2’ still at number one, earning $13.5 million dollars. The star-studded action film keeps entertaining the crowd, but it might have competition this coming weekend with the premiere of ‘Lawless’.

The Bourne Legacy’ stays at number two with $9.3 million dollars. According to the numbers it won’t be able to reach the amount of ‘Bourne Identity’, either way Jeremy Renner has owned up to his role and performed well.

Finally, the family film ‘ParaNorman’ also continues at number three with $8.5 million dollars. Certainly this stop-motion zombie has earned a good share of money, but not as much as what ‘Coraline’ got Laika Entertainment.

The Top 10 Movies in the Box Office are:

1. The Expendables 2 – $13.5 mil

2. The Bourne Legacy – $9.3 mil

3. ParaNorman – $8.5 mil

4. The Campaign – $7.4 mil

5. The Dark Knight Rises – $7.2 mil

6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green – $7.1 mil

7. Premium Rush – $6.3 mil

8. 2016:Obama’s America – $6.3 mil

9. Hope Springs – $6 mil

10. Hit and Run – $4.7 mil

First pic of Edgar Ramirez as ‘Simon Bolivar’!

08.27.2012 | By |

First pic of Edgar Ramirez as 'Simon Bolivar'!

Here is the first look at Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez as Simon Bolivar in the new movie Libertador being released in 2013.

For those of you that have no clue of who Simon Bolivar is and why they’re making a movie about this man, he is the George Washington of South America. He gave 6 countries in Latin America (Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia) their independence. He did more than Washington did!

If Hollywood is doing movies on J. Edgar Hoover, then Latinos should do a biopic on historical and political figures as well. Bolivar is perhaps the most important of all, if not the most.

Libertador is the largest independent South American production to date and will be directed by Alberto Arvelo, produced by Edgar Ramirez himself and scored by L.A. Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel, who is from Venezuela. Just Dudamel alone should be reason enough to pay money to see this film.

Libertador follows the life of Simon Bolivar, as he liberated many countries in Latin America from the Spanish empire. It’ll explore his political journey and his death.

Ramirez, who made waves with his performance in Carlos, is next in U.S. theaters in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, which Sony opens in December. In France, he’s currently in theaters in An Open Heart, starring opposite Juliette Binoche.

Premium Rush

Premium Rush

A bicycle action film? Really? That was the same thing I said when I saw the initial trailer from “Premium Rush“. Whoever made the pitch to the studios must have some amazing verbiage skills because the film, even though it offers plenty of action, it is not persuasive enough to be credible or enthralling.

The absurd premise has New York as background, where a messenger named Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is chased throughout the city by a dirty cop (Michael Shannon) before Wilee delivers a mysterious envelope to Chinatown by 7pm.

The film has some problematic tangents. The first is the concept of bicycle messengers. There are few cities that can offer such a business, such as New York, but Los Angeles nor London can. The infrastructure of their streets does not allow it. Will residents of provinces or suburbs be interested or connect with the storyline? If we who live in the Big Apple don’t care at all, I can’t see middle America doing so either.

Secondly, it seems silly to think that a film about bicycles can develop suspense, tension and excitement. If you think about it, the worst that can happen if a bike hits me at full speed is a break a bone. I’ll survive. It’s very similar to what happened to filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan in “The Happening“. Was I supposed to have nightmares about a few trees?! The gaul.

If I have to compliment something from “Rush” is the action. It is relentless. The escape sequences are very swift and can even entertain to a degree, but after the first hour it becomes monotonous because there is only so much juice one can squeeze from cycling? Director David Koepp, who is a very technical director, has yet to learn how to inject emotion into these scenes. The chase sequences are visually appealing, but they fail to make us give a hoot. You want to know what great chase scenes are? Watch “The French Connection” or even “We Own the Night“. Those two really are memorable.

In terms of performances, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, star of the film and an actor who has had an excellent streak of wonderful and memorable movies with the likes of “Inception”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “(500) Days of Summer”, “50/50” and the future releases of “Looper” and “Lincoln” by Steven Spielberg, does not connect here. It isn’t because he is a bad actor, it is that director Koepp’s script does not allow him nor the rest of the cast to showcase their skills. The star in truth is the action.

Michael Shannon, the antagonist to Gordon-Levitt, is a very peculiar actor. The man seems crazy, but you can always count on him to delivers memorable performances. Just watch his scenes in “Revolutionary Road” with Leonardo DiCaprio. The Dominican actress Dania Ramirez, who is always compared with Zoe Saldana, has plenty of screen time, but does little for one to remember her performance, then again what do you expect from a “cycling action movie”? I am sure that her persistence will lead to a role where she can shine.

In short, I give “Premium Rush” an A for effort and creativity, but perhaps Koepp was the wrong guy to direct. The film felt forced and manufactured. Does it deserve to be seen you might ask? Perhaps out of curiosity, but not for its entertainment value.

Ernest Borgnine’s final film: ‘Vicente Fernandez’

Ernest Borgnine's final film: 'Vicente Fernandez'

Indican Pictures has acquired North American rights to Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine’s final film, ‘The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernández’.

Indican will release the film theatrically in Los Angeles this October, with additional select cities to follow, and will launch an awards campaign centered on Borgnine’s final performance.

Film premiered in April at this year’s Newport Beach Int’l Film Festival, where Borgnine won the fest’s Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award.

The pic is written and directed by Elia Petridis, and produced by Darren Brandl and Dave O’Brien.  Additional cast members include Barry Corbin, Carla Ortiz, Dale Dickey and Tony Plana.

‘Vicente Fernández’ stars Ernest Borgnine as a stubborn man who becomes the local hero of his nursing home upon leading the Latino staff in a revolt against the home’s tyrannical owner.

“Indican Pictures is extremely honored to be releasing Oscar winning actor Ernest Borgnine’s final film performance, which is among his best,” said Randolph Kret, VP of Indican Pictures.

Hollywood icon Borgnine, who passed away in July of this year, racked up more than 200 film and television credits in an esteemed acting career spanning six decades.  He won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a lovelorn butcher in 1955’s “Marty”, was nominated for three Emmys, and won a life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild in 2010.

The deal was negotiated by Shaun Hill of Indican Pictures and Maren Olson of Traction Media on behalf of the Producers.

First review of Pixar’s short "Partysaurus Rex’

08.22.2012 | By |

First review of Pixar's short "Partysaurus Rex'

We had the opportunity to be the first to see Pixar’s short- 3D film ‘Partysaurus Rex’ which will premiere in theaters along with ‘Finding Nemo 3D’ on September 14th. What’s even better is that we got to see it at Pixar Studios in San Francisco, California where gigantic Lego statues of ‘Toy Story’ characters stood along with other statues from ‘Monsters Inc.’ and other cool things like the drape from ‘Brave’ among others and of course their trademark desk lamp and circus ball. We were taken to their own in house movie theater, where we had a short presentation by the director of the film Mark Walsh and producer Kim Adams. The constellations shone brightly in the movie theater’s ceiling before the red velvet curtain opened to reveal the screen.

‘Partysaurus Rex’ brings to life one of the most memorable characters from ‘Toy Story’, Rex (Wallace Shawn). We get to spend some time with another one of Pixar’s most famous movies and its characters: Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato head, etc, but most of all Rex; who shows us another side of him where we get to meet a bunch of new, fun and wild bath time toys. Rex has always been portrayed as a nervous dinosaur, which is very cautious, but here Bonnie, his owner, takes him to her bath time where he gets to re-invent himself.

Pixar has done quite a lot of short-films; the latest one premiered with ‘Brave’ and was called ‘La Luna’ which was also made in 3D. I must highlight these are two very different short-films. ‘La Luna’ has a melancholic and soft tone to it, its characters mainly mumble and point. Pixar has a knack for being in tune with everything, and as ‘La Luna’ worked with ‘Brave’ and its theme so does ‘Partysaurus Rex’ with Nemo. This latest short-film is a rave party, that’s quite the opposite of ‘La Luna’ as it is loud, extravagant and extremely colorful.

This isn’t the first Pixar short-film on ‘Toy Story’ either, Pixar has a series of shorts called Toy Story Toons and this is actually the third episode in the series; the other shorts are: ‘Small Fry’ which was released in 2011 with ‘The Muppets’ when it was in theaters and made Buzz its main character. Another short was ‘Hawaiian Vacation’ which featured Ken and Barbie and was released in 2011 when ‘Cars 2’ hit theaters.

‘Partysaurus Rex’ left me wishing it were a full-length movie, because it was so much fun! It has upbeat music and wonderful animation accompanied by florescent colors. All of these elements are brought to an even higher level because of the 3D effects, which really takes full use of them. This short is a great way to get the audience in a water environment, ready and excited to watch ‘Finding Nemo 3D’.
