Exclusive! Can Cáthia From ‘The Voice’ Become The Next Big Pop Star?

07.8.2013 | By |

When I first met Cáthia, I was at the Telemundo NY offices. I was about to do my movie review segment live in Spanish when the anchor teased she was coming up next. I immediately asked the producers if I could meet her and they acquiesced swiftly. I went backstage and there she was, zestful, humble, and talkative. She was with her sweet mother and her dynamic manager and there I was badgering her with questions about her singing in Spanish on The Voice. I just couldn’t believe she did that on national English language TV. It was groundbreaking. Read More

The 7 Best July Movies to watch in theaters!

07.4.2013 | By |

With nearly 30 films in the July calendar, I was thinking of making your life easier by sifting through the garbage and choosing the very best July movies for you to see this very American month. In my professional opinion, there are only 7 movies that have the substance and entertainment value for you to invest your money free of concern. I’m sure these selections will evoke sentiments of emotion, reflection and wonder.

7. Fruitvale Station (Drama, R, Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer) July 12th 2013
Plot: The true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008 when cops made a mortal decision that rocked the San Francisco area and made national news.

Why you need to see it: Debuting to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the gritty indie Fruitvale Station is already being talked about in Oscar conversations. Talk is The Weinstein Company fought hard to acquire it. I don’t blame them – its visceral last 30 minutes is powerful cinema. The rest of the movie has some true genuine, convincing and affecting acting from the whole cast. Get ready to see and hear more about this film come award season! Read More

First Photo of Benicio Del Toro as Pablo Escobar in Paradise Lost

07.2.2013 | By |

And here we have it. The first official photograph of Benicio Del Toro playing Colombian druglord Pablo Escobar in Paradise Lost. I had written an article about the news back in November of 2012 about Del Toro taking the gig after his “savage” performance in Oliver Stone’s Savages. He stole all the scenes in that film and the word was that he could even be nominated come award season time. Even though he wasn’t, his acting left a mark, and producers and directors were alert to him playing a drug lord in a leading role in the future. Read More

Is Shalim Ortiz The Future of Acting?

07.2.2013 | By |

Shalim Ortiz, of Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage, is a bilingual actor who speaks fluent Spanish and English. He has worked in both languages throughout his career and it has lead to this – an actor who can now be seen weekly on two shows in two languages – Telemundo’s “Dama y Obrero” and Starz’s “Magic City”. Is this the future of acting? Will all actors one day be bilingual and work in two, even three languages? How great is it that if work dries up on one end, there’s a whole other career waiting for him on the other end. Read More

The Conjuring: The Third Horror Trailer!

07.1.2013 | By |

From what I’ve been personally hearing, word on the rated R scarefest of “The Conjuring” is divided. I’ve been told in my face that it’s tame and a snoozer and then been told that it’s really scary. Sheesh, which one is it? Like always, I have to see it for myself because I can’t trust other friends of mine who are critics. I’m seeing it soon, but from the two trailers I have already seen, my current fave horror director James Wan (Saw, Insidious 1 & 2) amps the suspense to a 10. But I’ve been fooled before by misleading trailers. Watch this third trailer and tell me what you think – bomb or hit? Read More

Video: Disney’s latest behind-the-scenes featurette of “The Lone Ranger”

07.1.2013 | By |

I have to say that when I first heard of Disney greenlighting The Lone Ranger, I had some major questions, in particular why Johnny Depp wasn’t in the lead role and whether action westerns are still a viable and economical avenue to amuse film-goers and generate a profit. Disney invited me to a sneak peek about a month ago and… I was pleasantly surprised. From the close to 20 minutes I saw, it was worth watching. Here is the latest The Lone Ranger featurette called “In the Elements” that should give you a better understanding of what you’ll be paying to see at the box office! Read More

Stallone, Schwarzenegger: First Trailer For ‘Escape Plan’!

06.29.2013 | By |

Back in the 80s, Escape Plan would have been the movie of the year! Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same movie-going one-on-one in leading roles!? What!! That’s what I’m talking about. But now both are evidently old, still living off their glory day reputations. Stallone more than Schwarzenegger is in better shape and can still have hand-to-hand combat battles, but Arnold just looks frail (they were also seen in The Expendables, but that was more a cameo than anything by Arnold). Check out the first trailer above and the new poster, plus pics after the jump.
