Oscars 2014 Will Be The Year Of The Latinos!

02.27.2013 | By |

The 2013 Academy Awards might not have been the most cheerful event for Latino viewers who expected more wins for their own.

This year, out the 24 categories there were only four wins we can claim ours including Best Cinematography for the Chilean Claudio Miranda (who doesn’t speak Spanish) for his work on “Life of Pi,” Best Documentary Short for “Inocente” about a homeless undocumented Latina immigrant who longs to be an artist, Best Documentary Feature for “Searching for Sugar Man” about a musician of Mexican descent named Rodriguez who became bigger than Elvis Presley in South Africa during the 70s, and the biggest win of the night, Best Picture for “Argo,” based on the story of CIA operative Tony Mendez, who though he says is not Hispanic, does admit to having a Mexican bloodline.

Latino directed ‘On the Road’ has a new poster!

Latino directed 'On the Road' has a new poster!

The second official theatrical poster for ON THE ROAD just came in to our offices! This new movie fronted by an American and British cast, has a high Latin American quotient beginning with director Brazilian Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station). He has also surrounded himself with other eminent Latinos such as the screenwriter of the film Puerto Rican Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries, Trade, Letters to Juliet). Rounding out the supporting actors is Brazilian Alice Braga (I Am Legend, City of God, Predators, Repo Men) and Aragorn himself, Viggo Mortensen, who grew up in Argentina and speaks perfect Spanish. You could see him speak that great Argentinian Spanish on our video player to the left.

It is quite impressive to know that the people behind this very American film are Latin Americans. Even I had to scrunch my eyes when I saw who was in charge. Nonetheless, it is great to see studios such as IFC having faith in Latino filmmakers to be able to produce and lead even the most of American of movies.

Based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” — the pure essence of experience.

The cast is led by Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Elisabeth Moss amongst our Latino actors mentioned above.

The film will be released December 21, 2012.

Del Toro and Diaz team up in ‘Agent: Century 21’

Del Toro and Diaz team up in 'Agent: Century 21'

Deadline.com just reported that Latino heavyweights Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro have joined Agent: Century 21.

Adam Hashemi, a first time director, will be making his debut and looks like it will be an action comedy. The script is written by Greg Brooker.

From what has been gathered, Diaz and Del Toro will be part of a story that follows a down-on-her-luck real estate agent who accidentally is caught up in a Mexican drug war (sound a lot like Knight and Day, the movie Diaz did with Tom Cruise).

This pairing is a great sign for Hispanic actors in Hollywood – it says that there are Latinos who can be leads in a Hollywood movie not just supporting actors like. It is also one of the few times two Latinos are the sole protagonists of a big movie in who knows when.

The film is set to start shooting sometime in September.
