‘This Week In Movies’ we take a look at the new Hollywood releases and focus on one of America’s greatest actors – Denzel Washington. Though his film Equalizer 2 is not a prestige film, if it’s anything like the original, it should be fun. Another great American actor releasing a film is Meryl Streep. Her Mamma Mia sequel should target women and those looking for romantic stories to reinforce their belief in everlasting love. Finally, former Broadway Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs makes an Oakland film that should be talked about after you leave the theater. We begin the third week of April with a whopping 19 movie releases, which is a huge amount of films for one single week, not including all those arriving on VOD. This is probably one of the worst weeks in movies of the year as well. When Johnny Depp’s biggest competition this week is Marlon Wayans and some bears, that’s got to be a sad state of affairs. I mean, there is a penis documentary called ‘The Final Member’ that sounds like a joke, but it’s true. Despite that, perhaps the most beguiling film of the week is John Turturro’s ‘Fading Gigolo‘ which includes a rare appearance of Woody Allen as an actor in someone else’s film. This is one of the rare weeks where Hollywood is releasing movies I want to go see, whether it’d be because of the leads in the movie (Ryan Gosling, Kristen Wiig) or the intriguing premise (The Conjuring, Turbo). Whatever it may be, I usually don’t experience this sort of excitement for a movie week. I’ve seen a few of these but will watch the rest of them and you should circle back this week to read my reviews.
