With the academy awards coming up, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver tackles Hollywood whitewashing in a humorous yet unflinching way. The focus of the video is self-explanatory, but this whole idea that there aren’t enough good roles for people of color is utter balderdash. Even when roles do exist, they still can be played by white actors. Just ask Emma Stone. Her portrayal of a half-Asian woman in Aloha is perhaps the most egregious act of whitewashing in the modern era.
Amongst the examples in the video, Natalie Wood as a Puerto Rican in West Side Story, Pacino as a Cuban in Scarface, Gerard Butler in Gods of Egypt, John Wayne as Genghis Khan, Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton as Moses and Ramses in Exodus: Gods and Kings, Jake Gyllenhaal acting as a Middle Eastern in Prince of Persia, and many more. But Oliver missed other perfect blunders such as Ben Affleck in Argo, Marlon Brando as a Mexican in Viva Zapata, and I can go on all day.
But for the sake of laughing with a mountainous splash of truth, watch the video above and let us know what you think. Did I or the video miss anyone you remember?
