Update: Sean Penn has threatened legal action against Netflix over the series you are about to read below.
We have all read the Sean Penn Rolling Stone article he wrote back in 2016 where he and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo met with El Chapo. Well, that story is now being told in retrospect by Kate and Netflix in a three-episode biographical series titled “The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story“. The series, with never-before-seen footage, gives exclusive details from del Castillo on what led to the infamous meeting between her, Penn and the world’s most notorious drug lord.
The expectation with this pseudo-doc is to get some real answers to several questions: what was the deep interest in Kate risking her career and life to see a man that is pure evil? What was her relationship with Sean Penn prior to the clandestine meeting? Was her original intention from the onset to sell the rights to this story? What else does this saga lead to?
Though the El Chapo buzz has worn off as of late with his life being explored ad nauseam on Univision’s biopic novela, there is a 50-50 shot that this series might be received with lukewarm interest. Perhaps it’s that narcos have taken a back seat to clowns at the White House.
