The Monuments Men (Movie Review)

02.6.2014 | By |

Rating:

The “1-4-0″: @MonumentsMovie is earnest, well-meant and smart, but its entertainment value is too sparse to sustain your attention for 2hrs.

The Gist: With an all-star cast, this film, based on a true story, is an action drama thrown in with some good ol’ humor, about the greatest art treasure hunt in history.

The Highlights: George Clooney writes, directs, produces and stars in a war film about art. Although the premise might not be interesting to some, to individuals like myself, it is an intellectual concept that stimulates the neurons. The remarkable ensemble of Oscar winning thespians are treat to watch along with some exquisite scenery. There is also some heart to the story that comes throughout nicely. It also inspires you to visit a museum.

The Lowlights: Think of the experience of watching ‘The Monuments Men’ like going to the museum with some really cool, smart people in the form of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman. But you know even with them, at some point the topic of art can only engage your interest for so long until you doze off. This movie is the same thing. Halfway through, ‘The Monuments Men’ loses its steam because you can only stretch this limited premise, with enough substance, only for so long. It doesn’t have the dramatic weight to sustain its 1hr 52 minute duration.

Pay or Nay?: Nay it. At the end of the day, your time is precious and your money doesn’t grow on trees, plus, the entertainment value from the film is sparse. By no means is this a bad movie, it just would have been better served as a documentary.
